07 May 2004 EU Security Research initiative grabs aeronautics sector's attention Representatives from large and small aeronautics companies across Europe flocked to the Commission's Security Research Information Day in Brussels on 25 March to learn about this unprecedented initiative in European homeland security. 07 May 2004 Wings over Berlin 18 March 2004 A new EU-funded project will use state-of-the-art video systems and intelligent algorithms to track objects and persons, and to interpret normal aircraft servicing operations on the tarmac. 09 March 2004 H Driven by the foreseeable exhaustion of petroleum reserves and tightening environmental controls, the EU-funded CRYOPLANE project has developed a conceptual basis for a new generation of aircraft, preparing the way for a future without fossil fuels and where hydrogen rules. 11 February 2004 The SAFEE project, aimed at improving security onboard commercial aircraft, held its kick-off meeting in Paris on 5 February 2004. Thirty-one partners from 12 countries, including heavy-hitters from the aerospace industry and security specialists from the research and academic communities, came together for the first time to plan the way forward.

Index Guided Tour I n the 21st century, airplanes are a normal part of everyday life. We see them fly over, or read about them, or see them on television. Most of us have traveled on an airplane, or we know someone who has. Do you ever wonder how airplanes fly? What causes the lift that gets the airplane off the runway? How does a pilot control the movement of the airplane? Why are the engines on an airliner different from the engines on a fighter plane? How does aerodynamics affect the flight of a model rocket or a kite? The information at this site is provided by the NASA Glennn Learning Technologies Project (LTP) to give you a better understanding of how aircraft work.

What is Aeronautics? Aeronautics is the science of flight. Scientists and engineers who study aeronautics learn about how and why airplanes fly. Using what they learn, they can design better, safer, and cheaper-to-build airplanes. To understand how NASA scientists and engineers begin this big job, we need to first learn how an airplane flies . Then we can answer a few other questions including: When we are done here, we can jump into learning what tools are used to design an airplane
How does an airplane fly?
Most of us have probably seen or felt wind blowing things like flags or kites around. But how is it possible that heavy airplanes (some weighing almost half a million pounds, or more than 200,000 kilograms) are able to be supported by air high above the ground? The answer may sound strange at first, but it's actually the

Blended Wing Body Airliner

Within 15 years of the first successful flights in a heavier-than-air craft under power and control, the optimum configuration began to dominate the aviation scene. The aerodynamically efficient high aspect ratio wing combined with a simple to manufacture, structurally efficient cylindrical fuselage and a tailplane and fin mounted to the rear was considered the best design. The following 80 or so years were then devoted to refining this arrangement to squeeze out every last drop of performance. In any event, with returns on investment diminishing, it is becoming clear that if significant gains are to be made, a radical departure from the status quo will be required. The jump across to a bifurcation in the evolutionary tree will be difficult. Much of the huge investment that has been put into the development of current civil transport aircraft will be written off along with decades of design experience. The development of a novel configuration requires a significant investment far in excess of that required to create a new member of an existing family of aircraft e.g., Concorde, B-2... The commercial risk involved would also be a major factor in deciding if the venture should be given the go ahead. Very large returns would need to be achievable to outweigh these disadvantages.
