Physical Description
Mass

(19.8 to 3.8 lbs)
Aardwolves have a yellow/brown coat with several vertical black stripes. They resemble striped hyenas superficially, but their dentition is different. On the aardwolf's back is a strip of long dark hairs, which form an erectile mane that makes the aardwolf look bigger. Head and body length is 550-800mm and tail length ranges from 200-300mm. Shoulder height is 450-500mm. When attacked, an aardwolf raises the crest on its back, takes up a sideways stance to the attacker and emits a strong unpleasant odor from its anal glands. Some key physical features: endothermic bilateral symmetry
Reproduction
Males are generally solitary and associate with females only to mate. Usually there are 2-4 young in a litter, of which 2 at most will survive. Females raise the young collectively in small groups, that is, they are not particular about whose young they nurse. Generally 2-4 cubs live in a burrow.

Liberal Mafia Home Page (You need JavaScript turned on to see the styleswitcher buttons.) Hey, [why is this page so ugly] Looking for a Web designer? Check out my [resume] and some [samples] of my work at [WeareSites] Why a Web site for hyenas? Wolves have plenty of sites on the Web. Hyenas are at least as interesting as wolves. But in 1995, I looked in vain for hyena info on the Web, so I created some. Until the last thirty years, spotted hyenas were misunderstood. Scientists thought they were "cowardly" scavengers (they kill most of their own food, and can take a carcass from a whole pride of lionesses). Male dominance was supposed to be a law of nature (spotted hyenas, like a lot of animals, are female-dominant). They were of little interest to zoologists (actually, they raise interesting, important questions). For me, spotted hyenas are a bit like Baba Yaga in Russian folklore ugly, frightening, powerful, strangely attractive. And like Baba Yaga, the Wild Old Woman or Hag, they have important things to teach us about why mammals become social in the first place, the reasons for male and female dominance in different species, even how sex hormones work.

http://www.livingdesert.org/sgaardwolf.html
What does it look like?
Aardwolves' coats are light buff color with an orange tint, striped with dark brown bands. their fur is long and coarse, with bushy tails and a mane or crest along their backs which becomes erect when frightened.
  • They stand about 20 inches at the shoulder. They reach 2.5 feet long. Weight 50 to 60 pounds. Members of the hyena family, aardwolves are more closely related to civets, mongooses and meerkats than dogs or wolves. Aardwolf, which means "earthwolf" in Afrikaans, is so named because these animals live in under-ground burrows.
Where in the world?
Aardwolves occupy the southern border of Egypt to central Tanzania, and range from Angola and Zambia to the Cape of Good Hope. They are commonly found in open sandy plains or brush country.
What does it eat?
Aardwolves are insectivores with highly specialized diets of harvester termites. These termites are unable to tolerate light, and come out in late afternoon to evening in dense columns which aardwolves lap up with their long sticky tongues. During lean seasons, aardwolves feed on other insects and larvae dug out of the ground. An aardwolf may consume 200,000 termites in a single night, so are important in controlling these insects. With their large ears and acute hearing, aardwolves locate prey mainly by sound.
What are some characteristics and behavior?

P.R.K. Richardson and M.D. Anderson The aardwolf... •Is nocturnal, becoming active around or just after sunset, usually resting for about an hour during the middle of the night, and retiring to its den before dawn •Is solitary and shy, but displays a wide variation in tolerance to approach by vehicles. Most aardwolves when approached by day will run off a few hundred meters and retreat into their den or lie flat on the ground. However, the aardwolf may tolerate your presence and, as long as you do not disturb the animal, you may gradually be able to reduce the distance. Aardwolves are much more tolerant of vehicles with spotlamps at night, and one may often be able to follow an unhabituated animal at a distance of 50-100 m. • Is highly aggressive when captured or partially immobilized, and can inflict severe wounds with its long canines.

P.R.K. Richardson and M.D. Anderson The aardwolf... •Is a relatively small, hyaena-like carnivore that feeds almost exclusively on mound-living harvester termites Trinervitermes spp. These termites forage for grass in aggregations of several thousands on the soil surface, from where the aardwolf licks them up. Trinervitermes cannot tolerate direct sunlight and so are nocturnal: in summer they may be active throughout the night. •Is nocturnal, becoming active around or just after sunset, usually resting for about an hour during the middle of the night, and retiring to its den before dawn •Feeds quite extensively on Hodotermes mossambicus (these termites are primarily active in winter and, being heavily pigmented, can forage by day) during winter, and may thus be active from mid-afternoon until an hour or two after sunset at this time of the year. Otherwise the aardwolf saves energy by resting underground in its den (Anderson, in prep).

Scientific name: Proteles cristatus
An aardwolf, by Mella Panzella. (Ms. Panzella, if you have any objections to your photo being used here, please [email] me.) It looks like a miniature striped hyena, but it's not. The aardwolf (the name means "earth-wolf" in Afrikaans) is so highly adapted to eating termites that its teeth, except for its canines, have dwindled to mere pegs incapable of chewing meat. Its fangs are still well-developed, and it uses them to defend its territory from other aardwolves. Aardwolves live entirely on two species of termites. One of these species goes dormant during the cooler winter, so they then switch to the other species for sustenance. This very restricted diet means that the species has a very retricted range it can only live where these two species of termites do. An aardwolf doesn't have powerful claws or forelegs like an anteater or aardvark, so it can't dig out the termites. It has to stand beside or on top of the mound to lick up what it can. Aardwolves live in burrows in the earth, and come out only at night.

Proteles cristatus Size Height 40 - 50 centimers; Weight 8 - 12 kilogram. Range Eastern and southern Africa. Habitat Open country and grassland; also savanna, scrub and rocky areas. Diet Almost exclusively termites and insect larvae. Will occasionally eat eggs of ground nesting birds, small rodents and reptiles. Lifespan Up to 13 years. Status Considered rare in some areas because of human hunting and habitat destruction. Anatomy Its claws are not strong enough to tear open termite mounds, so it must lick them from the surfaces or dig them out of soft soil. Has a long tacky tongue to lick up termites. The jaws are weak and the cheek teeth are very small and widely spaced but the canine teeth are sharp and reasonably powerful. Senses Appears to locate its prey mainly by sound, but the strong-smelling defence secretions of soldier termites probably provide an additional stimulus. Habits Solitary except when raising young. Marks territory with scent from anal glands and dung. Activity Period Mostly nocturnal. Spends most of the day underground in abandoned dens of other animals or in dens they digs themselves.

Welcome to the HYENA page!
Please excuse the chaos... we're always never under construction...
thank you!

Welcome to my page, a hyena database of sorts. The purpose of this page is for the spreading of information related to hyenas. Why? I think they are amazing creatures and really do not get the respect they deserve. This is, in part, to the fact that people do not know what Hyenas are like and, hence, fear and despise them (people usually fear what they do not understand)( Disney does not help either). I invite you to look at a creature which you may think you know. Look on it with a fresh perspective, like you have never seen one before. If you are willing to do so, please continue on... if not... well it is your loss.
UPDATE?! Due to job and RL demands this page has fallen into complete disrepair. I should have taken it down but I have not. With that in mind I finally might have the time in the near future to work on it again. Don't hold your breath however. Contents:

Aardwolf
Genus: Proteles
Species:
cristatus The aardwolf is a furry hyena that looks like a dog, but has long front legs and short hind legs. Aardwolf means "earth wolf" in Afrikaans. Afrikaans is a language spoken in southern Africa. The aardwolf was named like that because they live in underground burrows. The aardwolf can be found in the Fynbos Mediterranean biome in southern Africa and in one other place in Africa. Although the aardwolf is small, it has some of the most unique characteristics any animal of any species could have. The aardwolf is a very small and shy there. The terrain is mostly grasslands, plains, rocky areas, bushy areas, semi-desert, savannah, and hills, and occasionally you would find a small mountain, or two. The aardwolf, aardvark, termites, hyenas, lions, and other kinds of reptiles and amphibians are some of the animals that live there. The aardwolf inhabits the open grassland, bushy areas and scrub, semi-desert, savannah, and rocky areas of the Mediterranean Fynbos Biome. The aardwolf reaches sexual maturity at the age of two years. They mate throughout the year. Its gestation period is 90 to 100 days. The birth interval is one year. The number of young a mother aardwolf can produce after the gestation period is anywhere from one to six, but typically it is between two and four cubs. The cubs are born blind and helpless. Both parents raise the young. The cubs rely on their parents for 16 to 20 weeks. The cubs spend six to eight weeks in the den. After that period, at about three months, the young aardwolves are ready to start foraging with one or both parents. They do that for about a month. At about four months, they start foraging on their own.
