The Family in Buddhism
Spiritual Clarity and Discrimination Build on Strong Family Principles
By Rev. Park Chung-soo , Gangnam Branch Temple, Seoul A family consists of a married couple and their children. It is a group of people tied by the same blood. We are a member of a family from the time of our birth until our death. The relationship between the members of a family is based on love and trust, and the whole group forms the most basic and oldest unit of society. It is the oldest in that it has always existed throughout history, although there have been changes due to the influence of society. As the members of a family live together, they evolve a common ideology and value system. Thus they cooperate and understand each other, all working towards a common goal. The most remarkable aspect of this cooperation is the economic one. The basic couple forms an economic unit and share their income with the group. A family has a strong feeling of "we" which is the result of deeply internalized emotional satisfaction of the family. While pursuing a common goal through common values, a family tradition is born, and so the family becomes a cultural group. The personality of each member of the family is built up within this framework and so creates the foundation of human development. The ups and downs of a family depend on the head, whether they follow a matriarchal system or a patriarchal one. Great Master Sotaesan, the founder of Won Buddhism, declared that the essential ways to regulate the home are:1

Korean Buddhism at the Crossroads (Interview)
KOREAN BUDDHISM AT THE CROSSROADS
by Dr Frank M. Tedesco
In conjunction with Wesak 2001, BGF invited Dr Frank M. Tedesco, a well-known social activist and expert on Korean Buddhism, to Malaysia for a series of dharma talks. He gave talks at the Kota Kemuning Buddhist Center in Shah Alam, Buddhist Maha Vihara in Kuala Lumpur, BGF Center in Petaling Jaya, Than Hsiang Temple in Penang, and Jitra Buddhist Association in Jitra, Kedah. Loh Kea Yu spoke to Frank about the challenges facing modern Korean Buddhism just before a pot-luck dinner and talk at the Kota Kemuning Buddhist Center in Shah Alam on the evening of May 6, 2001 which was also Wesak eve. Those interested to know more about Buddhism in Korea can access the web-site www.buddhapia.com/eng. 1. You are an authority on Korean Buddhism. What started you on this journey into Buddhism, and specifically Korean Buddhism? 2. Many people are familiar with Japanese Buddhism and Chinese Buddhism. Could you tell us briefly what is Korean Buddhism? Well, Korean Buddhism is Chinese scripture-based Mahayana Buddhism. Buddhism came to Korea from north China in the latter half of the fourth century C.E. Each of the three kingdoms into which the Korean peninsula was divided embraced the new religion. All the major doctrinal systems of Mahayana Buddhism of 5th - 7th century India and China flowed into Korea and were eagerly studied by Korean monks. With the consolidation of the three kingdoms of Koguryo, Paekche and Shilla in 680 CE, Unified Shilla Buddhist thought reached its apogee as the integrating paradigm and ideology, producing such eminent Korean monks such as Wonhyo (617-686), Uisang (625-702),), and Wonch'uk (613-696).

Session 148: Aspects of Religious Social Thought in Colonial Korea
Organizer: Koen De Ceuster , Leiden University Chair: Donald N. Clark , Trinity University Discussant: Do-Hyun Han , Academy of Korean Studies Refusing to let the scholarly debate be dominated by the issue of nationalism, the panel participants seek to demonstrate that religious convictions and preoccupations equally motivated individuals and movements. To attest to this, they look at these different religious traditions and ask what social role they saw for themselves in the colonial context. This panel will not just look into the ideas that motivated these religious social movements, but will also question the ways in which these movements contributed to social life during the colonial period. Doctrinal Origins and Social Ends in Early 20th-Century Korean Protestantism Kenneth M. Wells , Australia National University Koen De Ceuster , Leiden University It was not until 1925 that the YMCA discovered the plight of rural communities and established a rural department to address the economic hardship faced by Korean farmers. Not social inequality, let alone the colonial situation, were singled out as causes for rural deprivation, but individual shortcomings. In line with reformist ideas common among moderate intellectuals in the 1920s, the YMCA called for introspection and spiritual reawakening. Though under the banner of self-reliance some cooperation among farmers was promoted in order to reach communal self-sufficiency, spiritual and moral edification were seen to be the key to solving the problems of rural Korea.

Residents Shamanism is the most ancient and traditional belief of the Korean people, on the basis of which foreign religions such as the Buddhism, Confucianism, Protestantism and Catholicism found wide acceptance and proliferated very dynamically. Today, the Buddhism, Protestantism and Catholicism constitute the majority of Korea' s active religion, while Confucianism governs the way of everyday life and thought of the people with its deep roots in the Korean culture. About 40 percent of Koreans nationwide are followers of Buddhism and another 35 percent are Protestants. In Seoul, however, the composition differs somewhat to break into a population that is 49.8% Protestant, 28.4% Buddhist, and 14.8% Catholic. There currently are 5,959 Protestant churches, 1,107 Buddhist temples and 176 Catholic churches in Seoul.
Shamanism Shamanism is the oldest, aboriginal belief of Koreans. It is a form of polytheism based on the belief that spirits dwell in nature, home and every object around us and should thus be propitiated to avert the bad luck and assure a happy life. This belief still persists and a surprising number of Koreans go to the fortuneteller when they have to make an important decision whatsoever.
