the word "Witchcraft", what comes to mind? Is it of Halloween and Witches on broomsticks flying in the night sky looking for someone to place a curse on? Or is it of an old ugly hag with warts on her nose stirring a cauldron? The picture at the left shows that a witch is not old and ugly. In fact, many of these so-called witches are very beautiful and some are as young as 10 years old, or so they have told me. I have had mail from young ladies who say they have been practicing "the craft", since the age of 10. What happened to Barbie dolls and playing house? To those of us who know about it, it is no laughing matter. Investigators say the more then half of the world's population believes that witches are real and can influence the lives of others with spells and curses. Witchcraft has donned a new mask of respect in many places. Books, Movies and Television have played a tremendous role in the acceptance and the reduction of fear. Hollywood is making the witches more appealing to a very large and easily influenced audience. Witchcraft is one of the fastest growing spiritual movements in the country. Many are the young girls and teens described above. It is inspired by the feminist movement, which is part of the

President Emerita, Covenant of the Goddess (COG). COG is one of
the largest and oldest Wiccan religious organizations, with
members in North America, Europe and Australia.
Wicca is a vital, contemporary spiritual path reviving the ancient, pre-Christian indigenous religion of Europe. It is a life-affirming Earth religion which is both old and new, "traditional," and vibrantly creative. Wiccans experience the Divine as immanent, as embodied in the Universe, the world in all its aspects and in humanity, as well as transcendent. Therefore all of life is perceived as sacred and interconnected. Modern Wicca incorporates ancient and modern liturgy, ritual and shamanic practices by which people attune themselves to the natural rhythms of the Earth and the Universe, enabling them to experience communion with the embodied Divine. Wiccans honor nature as a profound spiritual teacher and devote themselves to the contemplation and integration of the spiritual wisdom inherent in the Earth's cycles of seasonal transformation. Wicca also known as the Old Religion, Witchcraft, or the Craft is derived from the old Anglo-Saxon word "wicce," pronounced "witche," giving rise to the commonly used but frequently misunderstood term Witchcraft. "Wicce" meant a practitioner of the Old Religion, and reflects the influence of the Old Norse word "vitke," meaning a priestess, seer or shaman. The word pagan is from the Latin "paganus", a country dweller. "Heathen," another related term also misinterpreted as a pejorative, meant one who dwelt on the heath. All were European peoples who, like Native Americans and other indigenous groups, lived close to the Earth and respected their relationship to nature as sacred.

    WELCOME TO WICCA 101
So you've found our site, and you're wondering what the heck this witch stuff is all about. Maybe you've seen the t.v. show "Charmed" or read an article in a newspaper or magazine, and you want to learn more.
In this section, we'll go through the basics of our practice and beliefs. You can follow along in order, or you can skip around and pick different topics that are of interest to you. You can also check our bookstore for recommended books.
We've done our best to represent our understanding of the teachings of the Craft, as we have learned them and as they are widely accepted amongst most Wiccans (note the use of the word most !). In our particularly eclectic branch of witchcraft, we like to think we're a little more innovative and practical than many of the more traditional, hierarchical traditions. Of course, they probably think that we're flakes, but that's the beauty of Wicca - we're each entitled to our own interpretations of the Craft, as long as we all follow some basic laws that have to do with respect and ethical behavior.
We invite you to explore our Wicca 101 section, as well as the rest of our site, and please feel free to

    134. CoG: Commonly Asked Questions
The strength of the Witches religion (also called the Craft or wicca ) lies in its diversity; it is a living, growing religious tradition.
    http://www.cog.org/wicca/faq.html
    Witchcraft: Commonly-Asked Questions, Straightforward Answers
    The Questions
    Q. What is a Witch? What is Witchcraft?
"Witch" comes from the Anglo-Saxon wicce (meaning witch), which in turn derives from an Indo-European root word meaning to bend or change or do magic/religion (making it related to "wicker," "wiggle," and even "vicar"). It is possibly also related to the Old Norse vitki (meaning wizard), derived from root words meaning "wise one" or "seer." "Warlock" (rarely used, for male Witches) is from the Old Norse var?lokkur, "spirit song" (not "oath-breaker"). Related words are "Pagan," meaning a country dweller, and "Heathen," a dweller on the heath, both of which peoples were the European equivalent of the Native Americans and other indigenous, nature-worshipping people.
Today, a Witch is a woman or man who practices a life-affirming, Earth- and nature-oriented religion, honoring Divinity in female as well as (or instead of) male aspects, and practicing Magic (which some Witches spell "magick," to distinguish it from stage illusions). There are many different traditions of Witches, encompassing many beliefs in addition to these. Some traditions are practiced by women only, and recognize only the Divine Feminine, the Goddess. Others include men and recognize a male god in addition to the Goddess. Some traditions may date back to before the Spanish Inquisition, others have been in existence for only a few years. The strength of the Witches' religion (also called "the Craft" or "Wicca") lies in its diversity; it is a living, growing religious tradition.

Back to Home Page or Contents Page or Goddess and Witchcraft or Index Wicca W icca is a religion of Nature, which venerates Nature by worshiping both the feminine as masculine aspects of Divinity. Its spiritual roots go back to pre-Christian belief and practices in Europe. Wicca first attained public attention through the efforts of Gerald B.Gardner in the 1950s, as it was portrayed as the remnant of an ancient European fertility cult. Those practicing Wicca refer to it as the Old Religion, or the Craft of the Wise. Outwardly modern Wicca appears to be a system of folklore and folk magic, but its composition consists of pre-Christian European Mystery Teachings. The main philosophical teachings of Wicca teach that the Divinity is composed of both masculine and feminine principles, which most Traditions personify as a Goddess and a God. (see The Horned God ) Other Traditions teach that the supreme Deity is the Goddess who possesses within Herself the polarities of masculine and feminine energy. Such Wiccan theology dates back to Neolithic, if not Paleolithic, times. Many debate whether modern Wicca is the survival of the Old Religion or a new religion, but it contains remnants of Old Religion theology. Others vigorously argue that nothing resembling modern Wicca ever previously existed. The truth may remain uncertain, but one certainty is that Wicca has been influenced by Masonic, Hermetic (see
