From Vodun to Voodoo (www.brnet.com/vopage.html) Vodun is a set of religious practices and beliefs that originated with the Dahomey people of West Africa. While the practice may seem only a couple of hundred years old, it is possible Vodun has existed for over six thousand years. The word itself comes from the African word meaning God Creator or Great Spirit. It traveled to Haiti and other islands of the Caribbean as a result of West Indies colonization and the African slave trade. Vodun is characterized by its emphasis on natural life processes, healing, rituals, and importance of spirits or loas. While it is primarily associated with the Haitians, it also arose on slave plantations in Louisiana and other areas of the United States during the 17th Century. It is in the States that Vodun was corrupted into the word we commonly use today, Voodoo. Voodoo has then been greatly misinterpreted as a primarily evil and harmful practice. The Loa of Vodun
Haiti is a nation rich in African culture that's adapted the different spiritual beliefs of ancestors to their reality in the New World. Most of their ancestors came from the African states of Dahomey, Yoruba, Ashanti, Mandingo, and Congo; they included the Arada, Ibo, Nago, Mayombes, Mines, Fons, and many other tribes. Though they each had their own pantheon of deities and particular belief system, in Haiti they found and understood the similarities. As they expanded their knowledge of the spirit world, their practices evolved into the sacred system of Vodun. This spiritual discipline is composed of two major elements: Rada and Petro. Rada is assosiated with the beliefs of the Yoruba and Dahomey and their divinities are considered more benevolent than the Petro; they are considered guardians of the morals and principles of the mother land.Petro divinities are considered to be more agressive, and though some are from the Congo pantheon, it is assosiated with the traditions established in the New World. The drumming at Rada ceremonies is mostly played in "even" time (4/4, 6/8, etc.,), while the drums in Petro play "odd" times (5/4,7/4, etc.,) and off beat; there is a sort of tension present at Petro ceremonies.
Legba is a Rada loa that came from Dahomey; he is God of the Crossroads, and the connection between the universe and its divine origin. He is the first one saluted at all Loa ceremonies, and is considered to be the principle of life; the initial procreative whole. He is identified with the sun and the birth of life; the center post in all hounfor (Vodun temples) are called poteu Legba. Through this post the Loa enter the ceremonies, and it's also where there food is placed. Dancing, drumming, posession, and all the activities of ceremony revolve around the poteu Legba. He is said to be very wise, and only he knows the sacred language of Mawu-Lisa, the highest god in Vodun. All prayers and sacrifice must go through Legba, and only he can open the sacred gateway.

Vodun Vodun a.k.a. Vodoun, Voudou, Voodoo, Sevi Lwa ) is commonly called Voodoo by the public. The name is traceable to an African word for "spirit". Vodun's roots go back to the West African Yoruba people who lived in 18th and 19th century Dahomey. That country occupied parts of today's Togo, Benin and Nigeria. Slaves brought their religion with them when they were forcibly shipped to Haiti and other islands in the West Indies. Today over 60 million people practice Vodun worldwide. Religious similar to Vodun can be found in South America where they are called Umbanda, Quimbanda or Candomble . It is widely practiced in Benin, where it is the official religion. Today, there are two virtually unrelated forms of the religion: 1. the actual religion, Vodun practiced in Benin, Haiti, Dominican Republic and various centers in the US - largely where Haitian refuges have settled.2. an evil, imaginary religion, which we will call Voodoo . It has been created for Hollywood movies, complete with "voodoo dolls", violence, bizarre rituals, etc. It does not exist in reality, except in the minds of most non-Voduns.Other religions (Macumba, Candomble, Umbanda and Santeria) bear many similarities to Vodun.

Vodun (aka Vodoun Voudou Voodoo Sevi Lwa ) is a syncretist religion that originates in West Africa with the Yoruba people[?] . The name Vodun is derived from the local african word for spirit , and can be traced about 6,000 years back. Today, Vodun is practised in Benin , the Dominican Republic Ghana Haiti and Togo
The majority of the Africans who were brought to Haiti and the southern US as slaves were from West Africa, and their descendants are the primary practitioners of Vodun. The survival of the belief system in the New World is remarkable, although the traditions have changed. One of the largest differences however between African and American Voudun is that the African slaves of Haiti and the southern US were obliged to dress up their gods ( Lwas ) and spirits as Roman Catholic saints
The majority of speculation as to why this was done is that it was an attempt to disguise their " pagan " religion from their masters who had forbidden them to practice it. To say that Voudun is simply a mix of West African religions with a veneer of Roman Catholicism would not be entirely correct. This would be ignoring numerous influences from the native Arawak Indians, as well as the evolutionary process that Voudun has undergone shaped by the volatile ferment of Haitian history. It would also be ignoring the large influence of
