OPINIONI E COMPORTAMENTI

Vodun
Vodun (aka Vodoun Voudou Vodou Voodoo Sevi Lwa ) is an animist, or nature-based religion that originated in West Africa with the Fon and Yoruba people. The name Vodun is derived from the local african word for spirit, and can be traced back about 6,000 years. Today, Vodun is practised in Benin, the Dominican Republic, Ghana, Haiti and Togo. It is the state religion of Benin and has recently been recognized as an official religion in Haiti. The majority of the Africans who were brought to Haiti and the southern US as slaves were from West Africa, and their descendants are the primary practitioners of Vodun. The survival of the belief system in the New World is remarkable, although the traditions have changed with time. One of the largest differences however between African and American Voudun is that the African slaves of Haiti and the southern US were obliged to disguise their gods ( Lwas ) and spirits as Roman Catholic saints, a process called syncretism.

V odun
is an ancient Afrikan spiritual way of life that is as old as human society. In its West Afrikan form, it is composed of over 30 ethnicities and mainly practiced in Benin, Togo, Nigeria, and Ghana. One of its profound beauties is that it is an amalgamation of the understanding of several West Afrikan peoples and traditions. New Afrikan Vodun is the Vodun (spiritual way of life) of the descendants of the displaced Afrikans who were uprooted and transplanted to the shores of North America from their Mother Afrika. The exchange of cultural and spiritual ideas brought about the environment for a new way of expressing the Ancient practices brought over by these brave Ancestors of ours. Therefore, in the spirit of the ancient Vodun it is an expansion of Vodun itself. New Afrikan Vodun is in essence a New Afrikan approach to Afrikan spirituality. It is set to integrate the essence of several West Afrikan spiritual traditions back into a state of oneness that existed before the devastations of tribalism and internecine warfare that have almost smothered the light of the Elder Ancestors.

Part 1
The Stargate overlooked a wide expanse of water. Daniel stood at the cliff's edge, peering down at the choppy waves lapping against the barely visible rocks beneath him. The land here was sandy and rocky, but behind him were rich fields of cultivated growth. "Daniel!" Daniel turned from his vantage point and saw Jack waving at him. He left the rugged coastline and made his way inland towards his friends. They left the 'gate and began following a well-used path, walking between fields of crops on one side, and fruit trees on the other. Ridges made by wheels and human footprints had been gouged into the soft soil during a previous rainfall, hardened now to near-cement consistency under the strong, hot sun. "Kinda barren, isn't it?" Jack said, meaning the water's edge. Daniel nodded. There had been no signs of beaches or flat areas where one could easily climb down the twenty foot cliffs to the water. The area they were walking in now was the complete opposite. "I'd have thought the people here would at least fish from the ocean, but I didn't see any signs of boats or rafts," Daniel replied. "The fields are obviously well tended," he added with a wave of his hand to the weed-free crops. "There is livestock here also," Teal'c said from before them.

Vodun (a.k.a. Vodoun, Voudou, Voodoo, Sevi Lwa) is commonly called Voodoo by the public. The na me is traceable to an African word for "spirit". Vodun's roots go back to the West African Yoruba people who lived in 18th and 19th century Dahomey. That country occupied parts of today's Togo, Benin and Nigeria. Slaves brought their religion with them when they were forcibly shipped to Haiti and other islands in the West Indies. Vodun was actively suppressed during colonial times. " Many Priests were either killed or imprisoned, and their shrines destroyed, because of the threat they posed to Euro-Christian/Muslim dominion. This forced some of the Dahomeans to form Vodou Orders and to create underground societies, in order to continue the veneration of their ancestors, and the worship of their powerful gods." Vodun was again suppressed during the Marxist regime. However, it has been freely practiced in Benin since a democratic government was installed there in 1989.
