New items all the time In Vietnam, Another September Tragedy Myles B. Kantor Friday, Sept. 13, 2002
This month marks so much death. There is the most immediate death of Sept. 11; there is the similarly motivated death at the Munich Olympics on Sept. 5, 1972; and there is the relatively unknown death of Ho Tan Anh. On Sept. 2, 2001, this 61-year-old Vietnamese Buddhist immolated himself in Danang. What brought Ho Tan Anh to this? Sept. 2 is Communist Vietnam's National Day, originating in Ho Chi Minh's declaration of independence from France on Sept. 2, 1945. After France withdrew in 1954, Ho Stalinized his northern dominion and pursued South Vietnam's conquest. Robert Kennedy observed in 1967, "There is nothing we would recognize as freedom in North Vietnam today," noting that Ho's "'land reform' program of 1954-1955 was a forced collectivization … so brutally carried out that the peasant rebellion that it caused could be suppressed by Ho's army only at the cost of over 100,000 lives." Ho died in 1969, but his hegemonic objective materialized in April 1975 when northern forces "unified" Vietnam with Soviet-made tanks. South Vietnam ceased to exist, and its capital of Saigon became Ho Chi Minh City.

Opposition is building to Buddhist monastery
By Patty McCormac
UNION-TRIBUNE March 18, 2004 Opponents say the Asian-style temple would be architecturally inappropriate for the rural atmosphere embraced by Bonsall residents and would attract more traffic and put a strain on infrastructure. "It will stick out like a sore thumb," said Richard Blakley, a neighbor of the existing monastery on the site, a single-family home in the 6300 block of Camino Del Rey that houses several monks. "I've heard it will eventually be 20,000 square feet, and they want it to be the largest Vietnamese Temple in Southern California," Blakley said. Blakley said he fears a tourist attraction that would draw thousands of people. Monastery representatives, he said, gave few details about their plans when they floated the idea to neighbors at a Jan. 17 party at the site. "They said it would draw a larger crowd when the master visited once or twice a year, but now there are upward of 100 people there every week," said Blakley, 65, a machine shop owner.

Trust
CCM: Talking about trusting is very important. I work with Vietnamese patients in the hospital. If they trust you, they will tell you everything. If they don't trust you, you will get nothing. Trust does not depend on how you are dressed. Whether you are wearing an official uniform or not, building trust will depend on how you deal with people, how you talk to them.
A Typical Death In The Vietnamese Community
See also EthnoMed article Death Rituals in Vietnamese Society by Dieu-Hien T. Hoang, RN CCM: Monk: Another point about death that is especially true in the Vietnamese community is that when someone dies, the family doesn't call upon emergency officials right away. First, they try to bring the monk to the scene. If the monk is not available, they try to bring some elderly people who can chant Vietnamese chanting. The prayer is done first, and then the officials are called. In the case of death, it is very important to contact the family and ask them what they want to do before the officials come. Some people believe that within the body the brain may die but the heart is still working a little bit. This makes the last minutes of life a very important time for the person to settle down, to make ready for rebirth. Buddhists believe in rebirth, not reincarnation. The death is just one thing that occurs for a person to be reborn somewhere else. The parents need to help the person to be reborn in the proper place by providing a peaceful and religious environment for death.

2. Visit to Vietnamese Buddhist Community Is Woman's Dream Come True
Preparations: After Huntington Beach resident heard Dalai Lama speak in
1991, she became determined to share the joy she felt.
By LILY DIZON, Times Staff Writer
Los Angeles Times
Saturday, June 7, 1997 Many Buddhists only dream of seeing the Dalai Lama,
Tibet's spiritual leader, in person.
Having had this opportunity three times, Catherine Phuong Dung Lam of
Huntington Beach nurtured a much grander ambition: to bring the 1989 Nobel
laureate to Southern California's Vietnamese Buddhist community.
Today, Lam's wish comes true. As part of his 1997 visit to the United States,
the Dalai Lama will speak to Vietnamese Buddhists at Cal State Long Beach, a historic moment for the expatriate community. The Dalai Lama is known and loved in the Buddhist community the world over. But the Vietnamese see in him a reflection of themselves: political exiles whose country was taken over by a Communist regime. Today's event is sponsored by the Vietnamese Federation of Buddhist Churches in America and the Vietnamese Unified Buddhist Congress in the United States of America. But it would not have been possible, group leaders say, without

WESTMINSTER, June 6, 1997 (Los Angeles Times ) Many Buddhists only dream

Having had this opportunity three times already, Catherine Phuong Dung Lam of

laureate to the Vietnamese Buddhist community and share with her fellow
emigres the inspiration and happiness she felt from those experiences.
This Saturday, her wish comes true. As part of his 1997 visit to the United
States, the Dalai Lama will give a teaching on compassion and humanity to
Vietnamese Buddhists at Cal State Long Beach, a historic moment for the expatriate community. The Dalai Lama is known and loved in the Buddhist community in the world over. Remarks by the Hon. James K. Bartleman
at the Phap Van Vietnamese Buddhist Cultural Centre
Traders Boulevard East, Mississauga / 16 June 2002 Good morning, and thank you for inviting me to take part in this joyous celebration. It is my pleasure to welcome to Ontario honoured guests from Vietnam. Many here today have settled in Canada after moving from a country whose traditions and history stretch back some 4000 years. It has been a challenging transition for many Vietnamese people, especially those who are older and have witnessed firsthand the devastation of their homeland during the Vietnam War. However, your efforts to adapt to life in this country have been aided by those virtues that are most admired in Buddhism - kindness, compassion, joy and internal peace - and by the opportunity to come together in cultural centres like Phap Van, which was founded in 1996 by dedicated volunteers. There is a Vietnamese proverb that says, "A good neighbour can be more important than a far away relative." With its large population of Buddhists, the municipality of Mississauga has proved a welcoming neighbourhood for the 20,000 Vietnamese who have settled here. The completion of this cultural centre, built with the donations of community members, has provided a heart for your community.

Collin,
Do you know Thich Nat Hahn? He's a Vietnamese Buddhist monk and
teacher. Has a community now, in France I believe...teaches here often. (I
once did a retreat weekend with him, years ago.) He's a very interesting
person and I'm sure would have a lot to say on the subject. I don't know
how to contact him personally, but just check out his books - they usually
have adresses of centers in the back.
