    Religion in Vietnam
Four major religions are followed in Vietnam: Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism and Christianity. Most Vietnamese identify as Buddhists, but many infuse their practice with Confucian and Tao rituals. This unique version of Buddhism, permitted under the communist government, is known as the Triple Religion.
    Buddhism
Buddhism came to Vietnam from both China, in the Mahayana tradition and India, in the Theravada tradition. Mahayana eventually dominated and today's Vietnamese Buddhism is intertwined with Confucianism and Taoism, as well as aspects of mysticism, animism, polytheism and some Hindu beliefs. This merged form is known as Tam Giao, or Triple Religion, and is widely practised by Vietnamese peasantry. Taoism Taoism was introduced to Vietnam during China's rule. Taoism is based on the ideas of Chinese sage Lao Tse (600-500BC), who preached a philosophy of harmony between people and nature. Followers of Lao Tse turned his teachings into a religion, with a church and clergy involved in communication with deities, spirits and the dead. Today Taoism in Vietnam forms a component of the widely practised Triple Religion.

Just off historic Dorchester Avenue, where Vietnamese markets alternate with Irish pubs, Chua Luc Hoa dominates the residential streets of Greenwood and Park with its impressive garden and towering statue of Kuan Yin. The center offers weekly services in Vietnamese each Sunday at 11 A.M. for Dorchester's growing Vietnamese population and for a small number of Chinese, Laotian, and Cambodian Buddhists from around Boston. Bao Truong serves as the spiritual director of the center. Although Bao is not trained as a monk, he lived in a temple in Vietnam from age 3 to age 20. Shortly after arriving in the United States, Bao began organizing this temple under the guidance of Thic Guiac Duc a Vietnamese monk, Professor at UMass Boston, and President of the Vietnamese American Buddhist Congress. Together, their vision is to "positively change the nature of the neighborhood through Buddhism." Although the building suffered a major fire before the community purchased it in 1994, the light-blue triple-decker has been renovated and now includes a main temple/meditation hall as well as a kitchen, dining and office space, bedrooms, and an altar honoring deceased relatives. The community plans to expand the temple with a permanent bandstand for outdoor services. Summertime celebrations, such as the Vietnamese Mother's Day, often draw hundreds of people and overflow the center. For larger ceremonies, the community has invited monks from California and India to worship with them.

Temple Vietnam was founded in 1986 when a group of 25-30 Vietnamese people from the Boston area met weekly for prayer in one another's homes. It opened at its present site in 1991 and maintains ties with other Vietnamese temples in the state and with the international Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. Although the temple does not have a resident monk, the spiritual leader is Thich Nguyen Hanh of Houston, Texas. The temple observes a form of Mahayana Buddhism that seeks to combine aspects of Pure Land Buddhism with the Zen tradition, according to one of its founders, Dr. Chi Nguyen. Occupying a former day-care center located between Jamaica Plain's Forest Hills section and Roslindale Square, this temple is the first permanent place of worship for the area's Vietnamese Buddhists. It was remodeled in 1993 and now includes a temple/meditation room, a function room, a garden and a parking area. About 50 people come to the weekly services, but for larger celebrations, the temple accommodates 300-500 people. The temple's members, about 10 percent of whom are ethnic Chinese from Vietnam, come from across the greater Boston area. The temple is governed by a six-member board of directors and its president, Mrs. Bich Nguyen. Temple Vietnam offers bilingual services on the first Sunday of the month, meditation and Dharma talks, occasional Saturday meditation retreats, and, on Sunday afternoon, classes in which children learn the Vietnamese language, history, geography and tradition. Dr. Nguyen says that all forms of meditation are welcome. "What matters is not the method but if they bring you back to your true self." All activities are open to the public.

Just a Second Talk Around Town Lifestyle Owners of the future ... November 25 in History Wednesday, November 26, 2003 Sangha leader condemns US bill for distorting religious freedom The US House of Representatives recently passed a bill on religious freedom in Viet Nam. President of the Viet Nam Buddhist Sangha, the Most Venerable Thich Tri Tinh wrote to the chairman of the House, strongly protesting the bill. Following are excerpts from the letter. On November 19, the House of the Representatives of the United States of America passed resolution H.Res. 427, including five points proposed by some members of the House, which are illegal and seriously hurt our organisation. The Viet Nam Buddhist Sangha is the sole organisation to represent Buddhist monks, nuns and laypeople as well as our honour, human dignity and legitimate rights, in Vietnamese foreign and domestic relations. That is the reason why we are raising our voice to protect the legitimate interests of the Viet Nam Buddhist Sangha.

    Vietnam:
The Suppression of the Unified Buddhist Church
Summary The Vietnamese government's recent detention of two prominent senior monks is the latest step in its campaign to suppress the Unified Buddhist Church, the main Buddhist organization in south and central Vietnam prior to unification of the country in 1975. With the detention of UBC leaders Thich Huyen Quang and Thich Quang Do on December 29, 1994 and January 5, 1995 respectively, nearly all of the church's senior leaders are now in detention or under house arrest. These cases of detention were immediately preceded by the arrests of several others, including the arrest of five Buddhists for efforts at organizing flood relief charity in the name of the Unified Buddhist Church. The most recent cycle of confrontation with the Unified Buddhist Church dates from 1992, when Thich Huyen Quang renewed his protest at the government's 1981 dissolution of the church and demanded that it be allowed once again to function. The government's response was to search pagodas for copies of his demands and interrogate and in some cases arrest perceived supporters of the monk. Tensions have steadily escalated since then, erupting in both peaceful and violent public demonstrations that have met with firm suppression by the state. At present, at least two dozen Buddhists have been detained by Vietnam since 1992, thirteen of whom are known to still be in detention or under house arrest. The whereabouts of five Buddhists taken into police custody are unknown. Human Rights Watch/Asia is concerned that many of these prisoners are being held for expression of their political or religious beliefs, in violation of international law.
