http://www.bible.com/answers/avegetar.html
Home The Bible Bible Answers Bible Partners ... Youth What Does the Bible say about Vegetarianism? By Mercy Aiken The Bible says that in the earliest days of creation, all of God's creation (even animals) were vegetarian. When God blessed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, He said to them: "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be food for you. And to the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the groundeverything that has the breath of life in itI give every green plant for food. And it was so" (Genesis 1:29-30). It appears that all creation was vegetarian until after the waters of the Great Flood receded and Noah and his family were left to replenish the earth. Genesis 9:1-3 says: "Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. The fear and dread of you will fall upon all of the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, now I give you everything." It is interesting to note that because they didn't eat meat, it could have been one of the reasons that Noah was able to so easily gather all the animals into the arkand explains why the animals did not devour each other while they were in it.

Blasphemy? No. it s called vegetarianism; and the country with the highest concentration of nonmeat eaters has got to be India.
http://www.ayurveda-herbs.com/vegetarianism.htm
The word vegetarian, coined by the founders of the British Vegetarian Society in 1842, comes from the Latin word vegetus, meaning "whole, sound, fresh, or lively," as in homo vegetus-a mentally and physically vigorous person. The original meaning of the word implies a balanced philosophical and moral sense of life, a lot more than just a diet of vegetables and fruits. Christmas is fast approaching and those of us used to celebrating the occasion with the usual Yuletide orgy of eating and drinking will probably be busy at the moment stocking up on all the essentials. But what if turkey, ham, or smoked goose are not up your street? A sizeable proportion of those sitting down to dinner in ten days will be pouring cranberry sauce over dishes like almond and apricot nut-loaf or roasted chestnut roulade. Blasphemy? No. it's called vegetarianism; and the country with the highest concentration of non-meat eaters has got to be India.

It's Healthier
It's Humane It's Economical It's Environmentally Friendly ... Some Famous Vegetarians Think about it. The human population of the earth will increase by 90,000,000 in the coming year. The stress this will place on food resources is enormous. Do you feel powerless? Don't. There's something you can do that will ease the burden on the earth's resources, help to feed millions of people, dramatically improve your health and save literally millions of animals from pain, terror and death. It's simple GO VEGETARIAN! It's Healthier Vegetarians are healthier than people who eat meat. It's a fact. Scientific studies show that vegetarians suffer much less from illnesses like cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and other common health problems. A major study reported in the British Medical Journal in 1994 found that, of 5000 meat-eaters and 6000 non-meat eaters, vegetarians had 40% less risk of cancer and 30% less risk of heart disease than the meat-eaters and were 20% less likely to die of any cause (Oxford Vegetarian Study). A US study of 50,000 vegetarians showed a very low rate of cancer (Seventh Day Adventist Study, Massachussets). It has been estimated that by following a low-fat vegetarian diet, the risk of food poisoning is decreased by 80%. More evidence of the benefits of a vegetarian diet is being found each year.

Little meat consumption, nearly anywhere (compared to today's standards). Mid-1900's Meat consumption rises dramatically in Western cultures as transportation and refrigeration becames easier Publication of Diet for a Small Planet by Frances Moore Lappe launches vegetarian movement in U.S., but unfortunately introduces myth that vegetarians must "combine" their proteins to get a "complete" protein. Publication of Animal Liberation by Australian ethics professor Peter Singer provides the spark for the birth of the U.S. animal rights movement and the founding of PETA. Late 1970's Vegetarian Times magazine begins publication Diet for a New America by John Robbins provides the inspiration for the vegan movement in the U.S., while it re-starts the vegetarian movement. 1990's Medical evidence supporting the superiority of vegetarian diets becomes overwhelming. The American Dietetic Association officially endorses vegetarianism, and books by prominent doctors promote low-fat vegan or mostly-vegan diets (e.g., .

Jewish Vegetarianism Theological Perspectives on Judaism and Vegetarianism
The Jewish Vegetarian Ideal
Jewish vegetarianism is a philosophy and lifestyle, based upon Jewish teachings and mandates, that prescribes a diet centered on grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds and that proscribes the consumption of all animal flesh, including that of fish and fowl. Many well known Jews have followed a Jewish vegetarian lifestyle. Rabbi Abraham Isaac Hakohen Kook, the first chief rabbi of modern Israel, considered vegetarianism to be the ideal, the ultimate peace between mankind and the rest of the animal kingdom. He felt that in the Messianic Age, as prophesied by Isaiah (XI:7) , we would all be vegetarian again and the only sacrifices offered would be the mincha sacrifice, which was of vegetable origin. Although there is some debate regarding Rav Kook's consistency in following a vegetarian diet, Rabbi She'ar Yashuv Cohen, the current Chief Rabbi of Haifa, has written, "I myself, am a vegetarian, following in the footsteps of my late father, the saintly Nazir of Jerusalem [Rabbi David Cohen], and his teacher, the saintly first Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Avraham Isaac Hacohen Kook." Other well known Jewish vegetarians include Rabbi David Rosen, former Chief Rabbi of Ireland, the late Rabbi Shlomo Goren z"l , Chief Rabbi of Israel, and Avraham Burg (vegan - strict vegetarian), the youngest and only religious person ever to be elected Knesset Speaker, whose diet reflects his respect for the sanctity of all life. Thus, Jewish vegetarianism has had many prominent adherents.

VEGETARIANISM IN INDIA T hough no country in the world is as strongly associated with vegetarianism as India, a number of recent studies have purported to establish that by far the greater majority of Indians are non-vegetarians. The history of vegetarianism in India begins not with the Aryans, as is commonly believed by Hindus, but in the aftermath of the introduction of Buddhism and Jainism in the sixth century BCE. Though orthodox Hindus are shocked to hear it, the early Aryans were almost certainly beef-eaters. Unlike the Indus Valley people, who were agriculturists and traders, the Aryans were a pastoral people, and they slaughtered cattle as food. Neither the early Indus Valley people nor the early Aryans venerated the cow. Though the Buddha was an exponent of ahimsa , or non-violence, he was not himself a vegetarian, and it is said that his last meal contained pork. Nonetheless, given the Buddhist emphasis on ahimsa ahimsa much further, and it is the complete reverence for all forms of life that made it impossible for those who embraced Jainism to practice agriculture. The upper castes, who found members of their community deserting the "Hindu" fold for Buddhism or Jainism, increasingly came to adopt vegetarianism.

Tanya was particularly upset: "Why did this happen to me? Why did I miscarry my baby?" The young couple had come to see me mostly because of Tanya's recurrent respiratory infections, but also wanted some advice as to how they could avoid the heartache of another failed pregnancy. Upon questioning Tanya about her diet, I quickly saw the cause of her infections, as well as her miscarriage: she had virtually no fat in her diet and was also mostly a vegetarian. Because of the plentiful media rhetoric about the supposed dangers of animal product consumption, as opposed to the supposed health benefits of the vegetarian lifestyle, Tanya had deliberately removed such things as cream, butter, meats and fish from her diet. Although she liked liver, she avoided it due to worries over "toxins."
