    - involving indigenous people in the life of the Church The Uniting Church in Australia has been at the forefront for many years in the struggle for justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It has been supportive on the big issues, at times of major public debate. Simultaneously the Uniting Church has ensured that its own structure and practices supported self determination and the aspirations of indigenous people. The churches supported the establishment of the homelands in Arnhem Land, Central Australia and around the Gulf of Carpentaria. They supported the Aurukun people in their struggles against mining companies taking over Wik lands in the 1970s, culminating in sharp confrontation with the Queensland Government in 1978. Later in 1988, the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress suggested a covenanting process which would guide the Uniting Church in support of the struggles of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples for a more just society. The covenant was seen as a gift, a means of breaking the silence and stand-off between Aboriginal and other Australians, and as an agreement to act in solidarity in a struggle for a more equal, caring and just Australia. The National Assembly accepted the invitation of the Congress and appointed a group of leaders to oversee the process. Half of these leaders were Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people. The covenanting process predates the reconciliation process and has many of the same objectives as the reconciliation process.
