In 1992 the first deacons were ordained. Five years later, many people, even in the UCA, have never heard of us. We hope these pages will be a part of the solution to this problem, as well as providing resources to help deacons themselves be encouraged, and productive, in their ministries. Deacons are ministers who are ordained to work primarily in the non church community, dealing with issues of social justice, empowering the marginalised to regain a measure of power in the community. The first deacons were ordained in the UCA in 1992. A considerable number were previously deaconesses. The remainder either candidated as deacons, or transferred from being ministers of the Word. Overview:
The Uniting Church in Australia is the third largest Christian denomination in Australia, being surpassed in membership by Roman Catholics and Anglicans. It was formed in 1977 as a result of a merger of the Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational churches. The church has an unusual organizational structure. It is "governed by a series of inter-related councils" within which the national Assembly has "determining responsibility for matters of doctrine, worship, government and discipline." They follow a form of local option concerning the ordination of gay and lesbian candidates who are in loving, committed relationships. Individual presbytery can automatically reject all such candidates. Other presbyteries can consider the nature of a candidate's relationship as one aspect of their candidacy. The Uniting Church is not the only mainstream denomination in Australia to have ordained homosexual men and women. But, it may be the first to admit that it is possible. While some homosexual ministers have come out in the past, the decision of " clarification " at the 2003 Assembly, and the negative reaction to what for many was an unpleasant revelation, will not make it easier for openly homosexual candidates for ordination to find welcoming congregations and presbyteries.

Our Statement in Faith The Uniting Church in Australia Our History History of the Monk Organ The Uniting Church in Australia
The Uniting Church was formed in 1977 when the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational Churches within Australia came together to form a new Australian church. This brought into union a rich heritage of faith. It also created a way to express individual traditions within an atmosphere of diversity, where difference becomes acceptable:
With harmony and grace, we are a diverse people who have a vision. With harmony and grace, ours is a call to love God, follow Christ and respond to the Holy Spirit. In harmony, we become the people of God – strong, flexible, confident, faithful, called. By the grace of God we receive the gifts of hope, love, forgiveness, challenge, empowerment and faith. [from the Basis of Union].
This statement remains a strength within the Church and has led the Church towards its commitment to being an inclusive church. The work of the National Assembly agencies and working groups includes issues of justice and social responsibility and the provision of community services.
The statements of the Church are aspirations towards which we are constantly seeking to move. As human beings we do not always get it right but through the constant and sure guidance of God through the Holy Spirit we seek to become such people. We speak of ourselves as a ‘pilgrim people’ actively seeking and actively moving towards God’s kingdom.

Issues in the Uniting Church in Australia
My contribution to debates on the ordained ministry and constitutional questions has centred on the role of the Basis of Union as the foundation for a commitment to catholicity. The Commitment to Catholicity in the Basis of Union The Reforming Alliance and Resolution 84 of the Assembly 2003 concerning ministry and membership Foundations for a Theology of Community Service A paper which contributed to the developing of Synod policy recombining word and deed in the social services of the Uniting Church with more than 300 agencies in Victoria. It takes up in a different way some of the issues of witness and effective service within a dominant culture that is often more hostile than is acknowledged, and where the distinctiveness of what the church offers to society needs to reconsidered. Vocation and Alternative Employment for Ministers I spent many years in alternative forms of employment while an ordained minister. Research was conducted and reports prepared for official bodies over a period of more than thirty years on the miniterial vocation and various forms of employment, oversight and pastoral care of ministers who were engaged in ministry beyond the normal parish structures. A linked report to the Synod of Victoria in 1996 summarized the many efforts made to introduce new structures and made recommendations which were adopted by Synod that year and introduced to the Regulations following Assembly 1997.

    http://www.wa.uca.org.au/
Welcome to the website of the Uniting Church in Australia, Synod of Western Australia. Born in 1977, the Uniting Church in Australia (UCA) is this nation's only truly indigenous mainstream Christian movement. It stands with the people of this land in their search for spiritual life, justice, identity and dignity. To be 'uniting' means to follow in the steps of Jesus who sought unity, prayed for unity and died to unite God and humanity. In an Australian way, it is reflective of the love, care and grace of Christ. Throughout the country Uniting Church congregations provide caring faith communities to which all people are welcome. Each congregation aims to unite people with each other and with God. If you are not a Uniting Church member, we invite you to attend one of our services, at a congregation near you Latest News

Doctrinal Standards of the Uniting Church in Australia [Note: this is my understanding of our doctrinal standards. It was prepared for study groups in my parish. The National Assembly has since, in 1997, reaffirmed the place of the Basis of Union; but related issues remain under discussion as will appear from other items under Issues in the Uniting Church DBHome Christian Beliefs Family History ... Questions and comments The Basis of Union of the Uniting Church in Australia states the basic beliefs which were relevant to the union of the Congregational, Methodist and Presbyterian Churches and defines the sources of doctrinal authority. It refers to the Bible as witnessing to Christ, who is the Word of God. Doctrine is to be tested against Scripture. Ministers of the Word, deacons, elders and others in ministry are required to adhere to the Basis. Ministers' Ordination Vows One way to identify the doctrinal standards of any church tradition is to study the vows ministers are required to make at their ordination. Questions relevant to doctrinal standards in the Ordination Service for Ministers of the Word in the Uniting Church include the following: Do you confess anew Jesus Christ as Lord?

    34. The Gospel Of Luke. An Introduction For Preachers
Written by William Loader, professor of New Testament at Murdoch University and New Testament Lecturer of the Perth Theological Hall of the uniting church in australia.
    http://wwwstaff.murdoch.edu.au/~loader/Luke.htm
    The Gospel of Luke
    An introduction for preachers
William Loader The introductory statement Continuity It is already significant that Luke has penned two volumes. Why write also about the church? Clearly it also formed part of the divine action in history according to Luke. Why not write about history right up to his own day, which many see as the 9 th Identity Crisis? Continuity with Israel The change of gear from Luke 1:1-4 to Luke 1:5, from high Hellenistic rhetoric to biblical Greek narrative style, demonstrates how important biblical tradition is for Luke. In stories shot through with allusions to the great heroes of old, especially the great women of faith, Luke opens his account with scenes of devout Jewish piety. Elizabeth and Zechariah, Mary and Joseph, Anne and Simeon echo the cries of Israel for liberation. Their lives are focused on the holy temple. They are scrupulously observant of biblical law, Torah. In this womb of piety Jesus is conceived. These people are true Israel. Not just their behaviour, but also divine behaviour, angels and visions and visitations, confirms the sacredness of these scenes. Respect for tradition Continuity with the early Church The golden age in history Being saved - doing good Jesus and salvation Luke in context It is this core which Luke is presenting as the good news. That is the main thing. But he has to present it in the context of what must be happening in his world. These include doubts raised by a rising Judaism and a, perhaps stagnating, Christianity; concerns that Christianity has lost its way and betrayed its origins or Israel or both; and dangers which some of its historical associations might cause to come its way from the secular authorities.

The Scottish settlers brought with them the religious traditions and spirit of their homeland and, sadly, also some of the differences that split the Scottish church during the 18 th and 19 th centuries. The 'Scotch Kirk' was established by the Rev'd Ralph Drummond in 1839. A church was built in Gouger Street and they became a congregation of the United Presbyterian Church, later moving to a larger building in Flinders Street in 1865.
