Yahoo! Free email account @uniting.com.au since 4 Dec 01 The Uniting Church in Victoria and Tasmania seeks to be a living Christian faith community across Victoria and Tasmania; faithful to God, seeking ways of love, peace and justice for all people. We have journeyed in faith through organic church union since 1977 from Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational backgrounds to be a part of a truly Australian church: moved by the Spirit and inspired by the Gospel of Jesus. We are a church that has acknowledged that we live and work on Aboriginal land . In the year 2000 our church agreed to live within and share a common call The Church Can Be Different A conference for people striving to discover how God is calling congregations to be Jesus people in a changing mission context. This conference, developed by the Rural Ministry Task Group, will be facilitated by Rev Alistair Macrae and take place at the picturesque Norval Conference Centre surrounded by the stunning Grampians National Park. Highlights of the three day conference include: the Church in the Culture, biblical paradigms, listening to and exploring evolving directions for the Rural Church, shared ministry teams and resource ministers (getting inside this document), understanding institutional change, networking, and creative worship, to name just a few.

The Basis of Union of the Uniting Church in Australia
Introduction to The Basis of Union, 1992 edition
In 1977 the Congregational, Methodist and Presbyterian Churches united to establish the Uniting Church in Australia. The document upon which this union was established is the Basis of Union of the Uniting Church in Australia, a visionary and inspiring statement. Its grounding in Jesus Christ "the risen crucified One", its commitment to the mission and unity of the whole church, its portrayal of church order and of the ministry of every church member, and its conviction that the living Lord Jesus Christ leads the church on its pilgrim way, make it a rich document which will nourish and guide the Uniting Church for the duration of its life. Yet some of the language of the Basis is clearly outdated. In 1971, when the Basis was completed, the desire for gender-inclusive language was only just emerging. Twenty years on, some of the language of the Basis sounds rather curious. More importantly, some people find parts of its language to be jarring and even alienating. The purpose of this 1992 edition is to diminish the possibility that the non-inclusive language of the Basis is a barrier to its use in the church. The Assembly Standing Committee resolved to issue this 1992 edition of the Basis in order to ensure that the Basis is well used in the church, frequently consulted, valued and heeded.

The UCA is governed by a series of councils: Congregation (local), Presbytery (regional), Synod (state) and Assembly (national), with a lay (non-ordained) majority on each. The offices of President of Assembly and Moderator of Synod (that chair these councils) are open to all members of the UCA, whether lay or ordained, male or female. Since 1997 most of these councils and agencies have operated under the consensus decision making procedures outlined in the church's Manual for Meetings http://nat.uca.org.au/regulations/2001/pdf/manual_for_meetings.pdf
