Sermons at St. Peters

Creating Unity Amidst Diversity At St. Peter's UCC, public worship is more than a recitation of boring, outdated doctrines. Worship is an experience that brings joy and healing. Many of us are the children and grandchildren of those proud reformers who came to Cincinnati (Ohio) because they refused to live under political or religious tyranny. Over the past 125 years, St. Peter's Church has encouraged it's members to "think for themselves", and to tolerate and celebrate a wide diversity of heritage and philosophies both inside and outside of the church. Racially and ethnically diverse we seek to share and celebrate our heritages in an open and caring faith community. Someone said of us "You are a heady brew." No one is asked to sacrifice their spiritual or intellectual integrity in order to be part of our faith community.

Welcome to the Web site for the Eliot Church of Newton, a Congregation of the United Church of Christ. We hope that you will join us each Sunday in Worship. There is a feeling "at home" here at Eliot Church - a sense of being part of a concerned family which cherishes and supports while urging each other on toward greater service in Jesus’ name. Sunday Worship is intended to praise the Lord respectfully, with warmth and enthusiasm and a touch of humor. We encourage lay participation in all Worship and particularly enjoy involvement of children and elders in our services and activities. We know we haven’t "arrived" and we’re not sure what we shall be, so we attempt to honor each human experience and cherish each individual story. Sunday Worship (including Children's Time) - 10:00 AM

New sermons from past weeks are on the Weekly Sermon page. Please see our Current Activities page for information on Eastertide and Summer at Covenant. An open letter to the President and the U.S. Congress regarding the situation in Iraq is on our Missions and Commitments page. Worship at Church of the Covenant is the heart and soul of our life together as a community of faith. Since 1932 we have been a federated church, maintaining membership in the United Church of Christ and the Presbyterian Church (USA) and welcoming pilgrims and inquirers from all traditions to our life and work. Through our prayers and praise, in our concerns and celebrations, by word and sacrament, art and silence, we seek empowerment, together and individually, as a covenant people, for the work of Christ. Jesus taught that God invites all people, including society's outcasts, to enjoy seats at God's table. This congregation seeks to demonstrate that vision by welcoming individuals and families without regard to race, sex, age, physical condition, or sexual orientation. We rejoice in the presence of children among us, and we strive to include them in our minlistry. And we maintain ties of faith with the Church of the Poor in the community of the Sweet Name of Jesus, in Northwestern Nicaragua. In our worship we use language and imagery that reflect the wonderful diversity of the image of God in humanity and all creation; that transcend the exclusive language of the church's past. We urge you to join us in the joumey toward God's justice and peace for all peoplein this neighborhood, this city, and the world.

In 1789, a group of nine citizens - six men and three women - met and discussed their religious needs. An organizational meeting was held and thus was born the Mount Sinai Congregational Church.
As our name suggests, we are a Congregational Church. This means that, as a congregation, we have covenanted with one another and with God to be a church.
As our Constitution states, "The government of this church is vested in its members who exercise the right of cont r ol in all its affairs. " As Christian people, however, we are called to participate in the whole fellowship of the church, and to engage in a common worldwide mission. Therefore Mt. Sinai Congregational Church belongs to the wider fellowship of our denomination, the United Church of Christ, and through that body participates in the worldwide ecumenical community of the Christian Church. It maintains its standing as a local church of the United Church of Christ by membership in the Suffolk Association of the New York Conference of the United Church of Christ."

A yellow-brick building with a wide five-story bell tower, and other turrets and high roof peaks, its construction was influenced by the Victorian architecture of the time. And, a modern and spacious education wing adjoins the main building. Through ramps and an elevator, the church's facilities are handicapped accessible. Traditional Version Robert V. Moss Version Doxological Version
This file contains the texts of the three authorized versions of the Statement of Faith of the United Church of Christ. For this and other affirmations of the Christian faith, see the Book of Worship, United Church of Christ and The New Century Hymnal. Both books are rich sources of liturgies in inclusive language.
Statement of Faith
  • We believe in God, the Eternal Spirit, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ and our Father, and to his deeds we testify:
  • He calls the worlds into being, creates man in his own image and sets before him the ways of life and death.
  • He seeks in holy love to save all people from aimlessness and sin.
  • He judges men and nations by his righteous will declared through prophets and apostles.
  • In Jesus Christ, the man of Nazareth, our crucified and risen Lord,he has come to us and shared our common lot, conquering sin and death and reconciling the world to himself.
  • He bestows upon us his Holy Spirit, creating and renewing the church of Jesus Christ, binding in covenant faithful people of all ages, tongues, and races.
  • He calls us into his church to accept the cost and joy of discipleship, to be his servants in the service of men, to proclaim the gospel to all the world and resist the powers of evil, to share in Christ's baptism and eat at his table, to join him in his passion and victory.

    Life in the 1880's
United Church of Christ in Indiana Sheryl D. Vanderstel It was 1833, however, before the first Congregational Church in Indiana was founded in Franklin County. It began as a result of a battle within an established Presbyterian congregation. Similar struggles in other parts of the state had similar results and the first Congregational Association was organized in 1839 in the midst of the Presbyterian infighting. (Rudolph: 188) The other half of the UCC was formed from 2 groups with decidedly German roots, in Indiana at least. The Reformed faith had its beginnings in Europe with Calvin, Zwingli and Knox. In the United States the faith was centered in Pennsylvania. The faithful counted Scriptures as the ultimate authority and the Heidelberg Catechism as the statement of faith. In Germany the Reformed faith and Lutheranism were closely aligned, a fact that would have repercussions for the German Reformed congregations in Indiana. (Rudolph: 173) The American Home Missionary Society, a mission effort of the Presbyterian and Congregational Churches, also aided the Evangelicals who settled in Indiana. The Evangelical Society, founded in St. Louis in 1840, applied to the AHMS for young missionaries and in 1846, one Henry Toelke was sent to Indiana. Toelke was a seminary graduate from Lippe, sent to America by a German Evangelical foreign mission society. After working with an AHMS minister in Pennsylvania for two years Toelke applied to the Evangelical Society for a license to preach. Upon receiving his license, the AHMS sent Pastor Toelke to Evansville to begin working on his own. There, and in surrounding Vanderburgh and Posey Counties, Toelke began a five-year ministry to the Evangelical Germans of southwestern Indiana. He returned to Lippe several times to lead German Evangelical immigrants back to Vanderburgh County. With these newly imported members, Toelke founded churches throughout southwestern Indiana.
