Regarding United Church of Christ position statements on Iraq March 13, 2003 Beyond addressing the issue of war against Iraq, the UCC has also striven to be pastoral in its approach by offering prayers and support for military personnel engaged in the battle, resources for members of the church who sincerely and conscientiously desire to seek an understanding to complement the perspectives presented in local and national media, and a sensitive presence to those who desire spiritual guidance in times of anxiety. Saddam Hussein, Iraq, and Iraqis With regard to the current U.S. administration, it is worthy of mention that, in other capacities, Vice President Cheney and Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld met with and conducted commerce with Saddam Hussein in the 1980’s. Later, both the Reagan and Bush (41) administrations assisted Iraq during its war against Iran. Hussein having come to power in the late 1970’s through the use of assassination and massacre, surely Messrs. Cheney and Rumsfeld, and Presidents Reagan and Bush, knew of the Iraqi leader’s methods and the kind of person with whom they were dealing. What set of "principles" are at work? What are the real underlying motives in dealing with Saddam Hussein aggressively now? Let it be clear that the United Church of Christ continues to speak in opposition to the behavior of Saddam Hussein. The first General Synod (1991) after Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait adopted a resolution entitled, "Consequences of the Persian Gulf War for a Just Peace Church." In it, the UCC named "the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq in August, 1990 "in violation of international law." More recently, in the "Statement of United Church of Christ leaders opposing U.S. war against Iraq" (Sept. 2002), the Collegium of Officers with a number of Conference Ministers and seminary presidents wrote, "...we condemn Saddam Hussein’s repressive policies..." noting that Iraq’s "civilians, innocent of the atrocities Saddam Hussein has committed, should not bear the burden of deprivation and death such a war would surely exact on them."

Tell YUM CEO No Empty Offers
YUM (the parent company to Taco Bell) has the power to end the exploitation of the tomato pickers supplying Taco Bell. But it is not offering to do this. Instead, at the May 20th annual shareholder meeting, YUM CEO David Novak offered to do something YUM probably does not have the power to do - to sway the Florida Legislature and make changes within the tomato industry. Send a fax to YUM CEO David Novak and let him know that empty offers are not enough.

Confirmation Sunday Confirmation goes back to the time of the first century Christian church when Peter and John "confirmed" the baptism, given by Philip, to the people of Samaria (Acts 8:12-17). In this act, the people received the gift of God’s Holy spirit, through which they were empowered to live the life of the Christ whom they had earlier joined through baptism. Today, over twenty of our finest young people having been instructed in the Christian faith, will renew their baptismal vows and publicly confess their faith in Jesus Christ. Come and help these great young people be received by our church into active membership!
