The discussion paper and the panel process are helpful in gathering together in one volume many of the external matters that affect our work as a religious charity within the charitable sector and with the public. Therefore, we offer our thanks to the distinguished members of the Panel and to their staff for the time and attention they have given to this work on behalf of all of us. The United Church of Canada was formed in 1925 by an act of Parliament, following mergers of scores of denominations in the19th century and finally the union of four major denominations. The church has nearly 4,000 congregations in every part of Canada, as well as post-secondary schools, camps, homes for seniors, health care facilities in remote parts of Canada, chaplaincies, social service ministries, group homes, social development projects, research and advocacy bodies, overseas partnerships, and ancillary businesses. This document provides a brief sketch of some major issues the church would like to see addressed before the report is finalised. It also provides feedback on some of the implications we see for the church in the recommendations presented by the Panel.

The United Church of Canada: Three Become One
UCC Crest The United Church of Canada isn't just a name; it actually was united in 1925, one denomination formed from three. (Since debate on this union began in 1899, clearly it was not a decision taken lightly.) The Methodists and Congregationalists , along with some 70 per cent of the Presbyterians in Canada, joined to create one church, in the process becoming the largest Protestant denomination in the country. This is reflected in the large number of United churches in Saint John.
The United Church of Canada's website
has lots of interesting history and information.
The Portland Street Methodist Church. The first Methodist church in Saint John was formed in 1783a good year for churches. Stephen Humbert was among the Loyalists who landed in Saint John on that May 18th of 1783. He held his very first service the following Sunday in the house of Cynthia Ann Kelly. Local Methodists had to do without their own building until 1808, when their church was dedicated on Christmas day. Several changes of address and two catastrophic fires later, the Portland Street Methodist Church was erected in 1881. Did You Know?

Worship and know that sitting around you are friends seeking the same pathway. Central United Church, a pastoral charge of the United Church of Canada, has a 163 year history of serving the people of Sarnia, through worship, education, outreach and pastoral care. As one of the oldest faith communities in the area, it has come to be well deserving of its motto, "The church in the heart of the city with the city at heart". Currently there are several ministry and outreach programs that provide care and direction for children and youth:
  • The Right Place - this cooperative playgroup for children from to 5 years meets weekly in the lower level of the church on Tuesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Parents/caregivers accompany their children, participating in the leadership and planning of the various activities which include crafts, gym play, games and stories and snack times for both adults and children. While this group is supported by the church, it is open to the community and its organization and success depends on the commitment of the participants. (Cost $20 for one child for a 10 week session; $30 for two or more children from the same family. There are three 10-week sessions each year).

United Church of Canada to Endorse Same Sex "Marriage" at Supreme Court
    http:// www.lifesite.net/ldn/2004/may/04050406.html
May 4, 2004, (LifeSiteNews.com) - Canada's largest non-Catholic Christian denomination is arguing in favour of homosexual "marriage". The United Church of Canada has issued a media release which says, "Christian morality and religious principles require that same-sex couples have access to the same marriage rights as opposite-sex couples." Couching the argument in terms of "rights" creates common cause with homosexual activists who assert that there is no fundamental difference between homosexual partnerships and normal marriage. The United Church is seeking intervenor status with the Supreme Court in the upcoming hearing on same sex "marriage" that is scheduled for October. The issue has become a thorny one for Christian groups since the passage of Bill C-250 that may make speaking out against the homosexual political agenda a criminal act. However, the United Church of Canada claims that the support of homosexual "marriage" is one that is compatible with Christian morality. Their press release says, "…in a debate that is too often characterized as pitting people of faith against each other or secular equality values, the Supreme Court needed to hear the perspective of a mainline Christian church that sees same-sex and opposite-sex couples as being equal in the eyes of God."
