Later in Genesis, Jacob also greets angels of the Lord as if they were men and invites them to stay in his house. The Hebrew word for angel, 'Malach,' means, simply, 'a messenger.' In the Koran, though the angels are clearly spiritual beings early on (we see them in The Crow 2:3 at creation speaking directly to God), in The Family of Imram 3:39, they act as messengers to Mirium for Allah. It has been postulated by more learned scholars than I that the Israelites were influenced in their thinking about the spiritual nature of angels when they intermixed with Arabic peoples (see Jeffrey Burton Russell's series about the history of Satan.) OUR UPCOMING SUNDAY BULLETIN AND OUR LAST SEVEN SITE UPDATES AND ADDITIONS Greetings. The Upcoming Sunday is Trinity Sunday - a day for meditating on the mystery and wonder of God. The Trinity seems to be as much an expression of faith seeking understanding as it is of the unknowable seeking to reveal itself. For many years special services tended to fall on Trinity Sunday - but this year we are able to present a number of resources that we pray may help inspire you.
Into All Truth
is a sermon by the Rev. Dr. Ross Bartlett that first appeared on our site in 1998 and dates from three years earlier while Ross was still serving a church in Ontario, Canada. (Ross is now in Nova Scotia). In it Ross reflects on the role of the Spirit and how it is 'that God and Jesus want us to grow up, mature, develop into all truth." and how "the first stage of that journey of growing up is faith. Individual faith in Jesus."
Confessing and Believing
includes an outline of a liturgy for reception into membership of the church and a full liturgy for the celebration of the Lord's Supper. There is no children's story since that time was dedicated to the closing ceremonies for the Sunday School. The sermon and prayers dwell on the meaning of the various sacramental actions of the day and celebrate professing faith in Christ Jesus as a response to the call of the Wisdom of God. It is in exploring these things that certain aspects of our Trinitarian Faith are held before the people.

Subscribe Contact Information Who We Were, Who We Are The United Church Observer is one of the oldest and most respected church publications in Canada. Its origins date back to the first half of the 19th century, when Canadian Methodists decided to found a weekly newspaper. They called it The Christian Guardian and named Rev. Egerton Ryerson editor. Ryerson earned a reputation as a "doughty controversialist who, by his facile pen, fought the battle of civil and religious liberty." His passion and determination were his greatest strengths — and often his worst enemies: in his first 11 years as editor he was voted in and out of office three times by the Methodist Conference. Starting out with the barest of resources, Ryerson guided The Christian Guardian to a circulation of 3,000 in its first three years. It came to be regarded as the leading newspaper of Upper Canada, a tireless defender of religious freedom, democracy and education. Ryerson went on to serve in government, and is credited with founding the public school system in Upper Canada. His counterpart in the Presbyterian Church in Canada was Peter Brown, editor of The Banner, begun by the denomination in 1843. Brown’s son George was the paper’s publisher; he went on to found the Toronto Globe, now known as The Globe and Mail, and is a father of Canadian Confederation.

[ 'Milestone' Document Passed on Jewish-Christian Relations ]
By John Asling The 38th General Council of The United Church of Canada has approved a "milestone" document on the church's relations with the Jewish community that acknowledges a history of anti-Semitism within Christianity. Working in one of three decision-making commissions on August 13, Council received the final report of Bearing Faithful Witness, a study program the church has been engaged in since 1988, and approved a statement on United Church-Jewish relations today that says that anti-Semitism is an affront to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Dow Marmur, Rabbi Emeritus of Holy Blossom Temple in Toronto, one of the interfaith guests at Council, called the document a "milestone" in Jewish-Christian relations. "The United Church of Canada is making a lasting contribution to Jewish-Christian dialogue," Marmur said. Former moderator The Very Rev. Dr. Robert Smith, of the Justice, Global and Ecumenical Relations Unit, told commissioners the statement was one of the significant issues to come before the General Council, which is meeting August 10-16 in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. "No other religion is as closely related to Christianity as Judaism," the final report, states. "The Christian God is the God of Israel. Jesus and all the apostles were of Israel. Christian scripture includes the scriptures of Israel."

UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA AND HOMOSEXUALITY Click Here to Visit our Sponsors. Depending on how church size is defined, the United Church of Canada is either the largest or next to largest Protestant denomination: About 3.1 million Canadians identify themselves with the United Church of Canada The church reports 684,000 confirmed members. Fewer (about 2.2 million) Canadians identify themselves as Anglicans, However, the church reports 737,000 confirmed members more than the United Church. This is the most liberal of the larger Protestant denominations in Canada. It is exceeded in size only by the Roman Catholic church . It was formed in 1925 by a merger of most congregations of the Association of Congregational Churches in Canada , the Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church in Canada . Some Presbyterian congregations remained part of a separate mainline religious organization; some Methodists split off to form the very conservative Free Methodist church. From its birth, it has had to accommodate a diversity of theological beliefs. It has had a history of tackling publicly the really tough social issues. Some cynics might say that they have a continual urge to shoot themselves in the foot, or to form a circular firing squad. It can be argued that they lose membership whenever they enter into one of these debates. But they have also gained members, partly because of the respect that Canadians have for the Church's courage, openness, and inclusiveness. Less courageous liberal and mainline denominations often follow where the United Church has led.
