Switzerland County [pages 233-235] Union Chapel
There is a great deal of history connected with this church, for the reason that Union Chapel is a granddaughter of the first United Brethren Church that was organized in Switzerland County. In 1833 John G. Eckels organized the first United Brethren Church in this county which was located near the town of Bennington. It was known as the Bennington church for a number of years, then later they moved over near the little village of Aaron, and then in the course of years they moved to the present location, which is not far from Aaron. It was in the old Bennington Church community where the Chittenden family lived. It was here where Rev. Lyman S. Chittenden was born, and where he was converted and joined the church. There were three families that were prominent in the United Brethren Church, and in the Indiana Conference; viz., the Chittenden, Richardson, and Cole families, and these were early settlers in the vicinity of Bennington. There were two out of the Chittenden family that became ministers in the United Brethren Church, four out of the Richardson family, and two out of the Cole family. Union Chapel has an honorable ancestry. In later years when Union Chapel was established, we find that Rev. J.J. Goodner was a product of this church. Union Chapel built their church house in about 1868. This church is still active, and it should live on through the years to come.

The Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church was formed in 1883 by a merger of the Evangelical United Mennonite Church and a Brethren in Christ group known as the Swankites. The Evangelical Mennonites in turn had been formed in 1879 by a merger of the Evangelical Mennonites of Pennsylvania and the United Mennonites of Ontario. The latter group had been formed in 1875 by a merger of the Reforming/Reformed Mennonites and the New Mennonites. The fonds consists of denominational publications and correspondence of the Missionary Church and its antecedents, with particular emphasis on Ontario.

The organized work of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ really got under way about 1879-80. Brenneman established the conference organ, the Gospel Banner , in 1878. The earliest foreign missionary, Eusebius Hershey, went out to Liberia in 1880, with private support to be sure, but organized foreign mission work was in operation long before the United Missionary Society was established in 1920. The first camp meeting, an institution which became a powerful spiritual influence in the group, was held at Fetter's Grove, west of Goshen, IN, in 1880. The Reading Course for Ministers was first adopted in 1882. The first home mission was established in Grand Rapids, MI, in 1880. In 1883 when the Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church was formed, the three district conferences had the following statistics: Ontario, 43 appointments (congregations and mission points) with 909 members; Pennsylvania, 14 appointments with 286 members; Indiana-Ohio-Michigan, 22 appointments with 452 members, a total of 79 appointments with 1,647 members. In 1947, when the new name (United Missionary Church) was adopted and before the schism of the Pennsylvania conference, the total membership was 13,313, with congregations in Michigan, Iowa, Nebraska, Washington, and Alberta, in addition to the original locations. The Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church represented in its beginning a breaking forth of new life in the Mennonite

    Evangelical United Brethren
The Evangelical United Brethren Church (EUB) has its roots in early 19th century Methodist-style revivals among German immigrants in Pennsylvania. The revivals spurred the formation of two denominations: the United Brethren in Christ (1800) and the Evangelical Association (1816). A splinter group, called the United Brethren in Christ (Old Constitution) left the United Brethren in 1889 and remained separate. A group succeeded from the Evangelical Association in 1891 to form the United Evangelical Association, however these two groups merged again in 1922 to form the Evangelical Church. In 1946, the United Brethren in Christ and the Evangelical Church merged to form the Evangelical United Brethren. The denomination's theological and structural similarity to the Methodist Church led the two to merge into the United Methodist Church in 1968. See also: Methodist
