Background
The B.I.C. Church began about in Pennsylvania . It shares an early connection with the United Brethren back to . Martin Boehm, (later bishop of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ ) was initially the leader of those who formed the River Brethren . Often known by their locality, a group of brethren north of Marietta, Pennsylvania on the east side of the Susquehanna River became known as the River Brethren. The River Brethren distanced themselves from Boehm and the United Brethren movement as they developed a conviction that trine immersion was the scriptural form of baptism. Jacob Engel is noted as one of the early leaders who promoted this position. The first confessional statement of this group was formulated around

The next church organized was the Methodist Church, located at the corner of 14th. and Grosscup Avenue. This church was soon followed by the Baptist Church, originally located at the corner of Payne Avenue and 13th. Street. The United Brethren Church was eventually merged with the Methodist Conference and became known as First Church United Methodist. The church building at the corner of Myers Avenue and 14th. Street burned down in 1981 and was replaced with a much larger structure in 1983. Church History by Mrs. Pauline Pittman During 2000 the Church celebrated its 90 th anniversary. The Anniversary Planning Committee decided it would be meaningful to briefly follow our Church from its very beginning. We are thankful for our Christian heritage. The Church was organized in 1910 as United Brethren in Christ. The church got its name from a service held in Isaac Long’s barn near Lancaster, Pa. in 1767. When the preacher, Martin Boehm, finished his sermon a minister from the Dutch Reform church named William Otterbein threw his arm around him and explained "We are brethren". The church was organized September 25, 1800.

Evangelical United Brethren
The Evangelical United Brethren Church was formed in November 1946 through the merging of the former Church of the United Brethren in Christ and the Evangelical Church. These denominations were born almost simultaneously and developed side by side through 150 years before this union. The Church of the United Brethren in Christ resulted from the efforts of Philip William Otterbein, then pastor of the Second Reformed Church in Baltimore, and Martin Boehm, a Mennonite bishop living in southern Lancaster Co., PA. Otterbein, imbued with the Reformed pietistic spirit which he inherited during his student days at Herborn, was so favorably impressed by a sermon preached by Boehm at Long's barn, near Neffsville, PA, about 1767, that he threw his arms about Boehm's neck and said, "We are brethren!" whence the name "United Brethren." For a long generation, Otterbein, Boehm, and other pastors with similar pietistic and evangelistic inclinations continued their work in their respective denominations. By 1800 the work was sufficiently distinct to warrant the calling of the first general conference, at which time Otterbein and Boehm were named bishops. The first rules and order were printed in 1815. This denomination stressed the observance of "feetwashing" during the earlier years of its history and permitted the practice of baptism by immersion, though prescribing no one form. Through differences of opinion about the constitution of the church, a small faction left the denomination in May 1885 to form the Church of the United Brethren (Old Constitution), which continued as a small denomination to the 1950s.

Jana Hoobler's Praise and Prayer Praise:
Thank you for praying for our trip to Shanghai. I had a wonderful time! I really was able to have a lot of quality conversation with the ELP students with whom I traveled. I also just enjoyed seeing a new part of China and being in "vacation mode". David and Melissa Kline have arrived and have rented an apartment. They're busy getting settled in and studying Cantonese. Thank God for their commitment to ministry in Macau! Prayer:
Please pray for a staff retreat that we're holding this weekend. Pray especially that Jen, David, Melissa, and I will continue to draw together as a team and see clearly God's plan for us to serve together. Please pray for Anna, a former Thai ELP student whose father is dying of cancer in Thailand.
February 27, 2004
Praise:

A high school student named Trey is attending ELP classes this term. His parents studied in the ELP at Living Word Church about 7 years ago. None of them are Christians, but this week after class Trey asked me about where our churches are. He said his father wanted to know. Pray for this family and thank God for bringing us back into contact with them.

United Brethren Church At first no steps were taken for separate organization, but as the movement spread meetings were arranged and in 1789 a general council of the leading ministers, 15 in number, was called at Baltimore. A similar conference was held near York, Pa., in 1791. In 1800 the first regular annual conference was held at Frederick, Md., when the name United Brethren in Christ was adopted and Otterbein and Boehm were elected the first superintendents or bishops. Fifteen years later the first general conference met at Mount Pleasant, Pa., when a confession of faith and a discipline were adopted. The United Brethren have a quarterly and annual conference, with a quadrennial general conference, which is the only legislative body, composed of an equal number of clergy and laymen. The supervision of the church is in the hands of the bishops, who are elected every four years. The first steps taken by the church to establish congregations in Kansas began late in the territorial period, when a church was organized at Lecompton with 5 members by W. A. Cardwell, a missionary and the first preacher of this denomination in the town. A church was established in Osage county early in the '60s but did not prosper and was disbanded. Subsequently it was reorganized and became a strong church. In July, 1869, a church was organized at Topeka with 8 members, and within a short time a church building was erected. Great progress was made by the United Brethren in Kansas during the next twenty years, as the census of 1890 gave the number of congregations as 155; the church buildings as 47 and the membership as 5,745. In 1906 the United Brethren ranked seventh in the state with a membership of 15,998.
