United Brethren in Christ United Brethren in Christ is the title of the church which, in the latter part of the last century, grew out of the religious awakening of Philip William Otterbein and a number of his friends. Philip William Otterbein, the leader of this movement, was a distinguished divine and missionary of the German Reformed church, who was sent by the synod of Holland, in 1752, from Dillenburg, Germany, to America. As a young man he preached with great power and learning. It was not, however, till after his settlement at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, his first charge in America, that Otterbein, after much prayer, realized that God had poured upon him the spirit of grace and power. He began to urge the necessity of a new birth and of experimental godliness. Rev. Martin Boehm, a zealous Mennonite, having himself experienced a similar change of heart, was engaged in a different field in the same work. At a "great meeting" held about 1766, in Isaac Long's barn, in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, both these ministers, with many others, were present. At the close of a very earnest sermon by Mr. Boehm, Mr. Otterbein arose and embraced the preacher, crying, "We are brethren!" These words suggested, a number of years later, the name for the new denomination which finally sprung from this meeting. For the purpose of uniting and establishing the believers in the new life a conference of the ministers was held in 1789, at Baltimore. In 1800, the societies interested in the movement united and formed the "United Brethren in Christ," with Mr. Otterbein and Mr. Boehm as bishops.

Protestant Protestantism in the strict sense of the word is the group of princes and imperial cities who, at the diet of Speyer in 1529, signed a protestation against the Edict of Worms which forbade the Lutheran teachings within the Holy Roman Empire. From there, the word Protestant in German speaking areas still refers to Lutheran churches in contrast to Reformed churches, while the common designation for all churches originating from the Reformation is Evangelical.

The Smith Library at Shenandoah University maintains an archive of Evangelical United Brethren Church materials in its Special Collections area. These materials are of particular interest to historians of the university due to the fact that much of the endowment for the relocation of Shenandoah from Dayton to Winchester was provided through the Evangelical United Brethren Church. Evangelical United Brethren historical materials appear in the library's catalog under its own formal title, as well as under various antecedent denominations. A brief explanation is provided here (via the Library of Congress) of the interrelationships between the various churches: "In 1939 the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Methodist Episcopal Church (South), and the Methodist Protestant Church united to form the Methodist Church (U.S.); in 1946 the Church of the United Brethren in Christ (New constitution) and the Evangelical Church united to form the Evangelical United Brethren Church; in 1968 the Methodist Church (U.S.) and the Evangelical United Brethren Church united to form the United Methodist Church (U.S.)." The Spirit of Amistad
in The United Methodist Church By Darrell Reeck A New World Outlook Online Article
Imagine that the year is 1839. Imagine a revolt by 53 weakened, enslaved African captives being transshipped around the island of Cuba. Imagine them overpowering their well-armed captors and setting sail for Africa and freedom. If you imagine these things, you'll be recreating history. With Steven Spielberg's film Amistad , released on December 12, 1997, you can do more than imagine; you can experience a modern retelling of an exhilarating liberation story. United Methodists around the world have a vital connection with the Amistad incident. Today, in West Africa, The United Methodist Church in Sierra Leone has more than 85,000 members. This modern Sierra Leone Annual Conference has important historical links with the Amistad revolt that took place 158 years ago. United Brethren in Christ Chapel in Sierra Leone

    Amistad: The Story
In 1839, the captives below decks wanted only to return to their homes in what is now Sierra Leone. After successfully overpowering the crew, they set sail for Africa. Inadvertently, however, they drifted north to Long Island Sound, where they were arrested by the US Coast Guard. There the foreign slaveholders caught up with them and demanded that the United States return the slaves to a plantation in Cuba. Almost immediately, American abolitionists intervened on behalf of the captives. These activists in the name of Christ provided housing and education and helped the captives gain widespread publicity while awaiting trial. They also arranged a defense when the government appealed the case before the United States Supreme Court. There, none other than former President John Quincy Adams argued the captives' case, pleading for their acquittal and freedom. Subsequently, the Supreme Court freed the Amistad captives in 1841.

CHURCH OF THE UNITED BRETHREN IN CHRIST
I do not wish to assume that this is a history of the Church of the Brethren in Christ, but just a few facts of just how the United Brethren Church came to be, who was responsible for organizing the church and it's progress since it's founding, and the church's growth in West Virginia.
PHILIP WILLIAM OTTERBEIN was born June 1726 in the town of Dillenburg, in the duchy of Nassau, now known as Wiesbaden, Germany. The Otterbein family had come to Dillenburg in 1650. Philip's grandfather and father, John Daniel Otterbein, were both ministers in the German Reformed Church and his father was also a teacher in the Reform Latin School, where Philip received his education. His mother was Willelmina Henrietta, daughter of John Jacob Hoerlen. After Philip received his formal education he taught for a short time before he was ordained in the old church at Dillenburg on Jun 13, 1749.
At this time the emigration of Germans was increasing by large numbers to the American colonies of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia, and it was recognized by church authorities that the German Reform Church must send missionaries to minister to the needs of the growing German Speaking population along with the Lutherans and Mennonites.
The Rev. Michael Schlatter had gone to America in 1746 to asses the need for more ministers and upon his return to Europe in 1751 he requested and received five young Reform ministers of which Rev. Philip William Otterbein was one. They arrived in New York late on the 28th of July, 1752. Rev. Otterbein considered a very apt and devout minister preached in and around the Lancaster, Pennsylvania area for several years in the normal orthodox manner of the Reform church, but always felt something was missing, and he thought it was his need to return to Germany, but one thing or another always prevented him from returning home. He met and married Susan LeRoy, on April 19, 1762. He and Susan were married or only six years for Susan died in April 1768.
