United Brethren in Christ (New Constitution): A denomination of Evangelical Christians, Arminian in doctrine, founded by Philip William Otterbein in the latter part of the eighteenth century. 1. Origin. Otterbein came to America in 1752 as a missionary of the German Reformed Church. His first charge was at Lancaster, Penn., where he experienced what he regarded as his first real change of heart, and his 2. Organization and Work. The denomination has ten colleges and one theological seminary (at Dayton, O.) with over 3,500 students, 65 of whom are in the theological seminary. The total membership in 1911 was 290,516; there were 2,030 itinerant ministers and 475 local ministers; the number enrolled in Sunday-schools was over 360,000. The denomination is found chiefly in Pennsylvania, Maryland, northern Virginia, western New York, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and Kansas, but extends westward in nearly parallel lines to the Pacific coast and in recent years has entered a number of the southern states. The publishing-house at Dayton, O., issues twenty-six weekly, monthly, semimonthly, and quarterly periodicals, with an aggregate average circulation for the year ending Apr. 1, 1911, of 525,250 copies.

E U B - Evangelical United Brethren Church General Information The Evangelical United Brethren Church came into existence in 1946 through the merger of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ and the Evangelical Church. Both denominations were products of religious revival among the German speaking populations of Pennsylvania and Maryland at the turn of the 19th century. The Church of the United Brethren in Christ arose in 1800 through the efforts of Philip Otterbein of the German Reformed Church, and Martin Boehm, a Mennonite bishop. The organization that later became the Evangelical Church was begun by Jacob Albright in 1807. His followers adopted the names Evangelical Association in 1816 and Evangelical Church in 1922. Mount Sinai United Brethren in Christ Greene County, Tennessee The following was transcribed by Jackie Robinson from a compilation done by Myrtle Guthrie (deceased). Permission was granted by Marie Reeves, daughter of M. Guthrie, for use of this document. HISTORY SUBSCRIPTIONS TO BUILD 1888 PASTORS FIRST MEMBERS ... MEMBERSHIP 1892 HISTORY For many years, services were held in what was called Hauns School House. The building, made of logs, had slab benches. All material and work was donated by the community. In 1888, Anderson cox and wife, Mollie, donated 1/2 acre of land for a cemetery and church. Mt. Sinai church was built and dedicated in the same year, under the leadership of the Reverand R. Owens. Again all materials and labor were donated by the congregation and community. the building was 30' x 40'. It was built of yellow pine and poplar. Supt. A.J. Newgent and Rev. Owens organized a Sunday School that had about 20 members. J.A. Yates was Choir Leader. In 1924 a piano was purchased. Ruth Pierce became pianist, a position she held until the end of 1963. In 1931, the church was moved out of the cemetery and more land purchased. Two Sunday School rooms were added. At that time W. H. Turner was pastor with a membership of 70 people.
