WHAT IS unitarian universalism? WE BELIEVE. unitarian universalism is a liberal religion born of the Jewish and Christian traditions.

WHAT IS UNITARIAN UNIVERSALISM?
The Seven Principles of the Unitarian Universalist Association: We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote:
  • The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
  • Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
  • Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
  • A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
  • The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
  • The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
  • Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part. WE BELIEVE Unitarian Universalism is a liberal religion born of the Jewish and Christian traditions. We keep our minds open to the religious questions people have struggled with in all times and places. We believe that personal experience, conscience and reason should be the final authorities in religion. In the end religious authority lies not in a book or person or institution, but in ourselves. We put religious insights to the test of our hearts and minds. We uphold the free search for truth. We will not be bound by a statement of belief. We do not ask anyone to subscribe to a creed. We say ours is a noncreedal religion. Ours is a free faith.

    Sunday Worship
    Sunday worship is a multi-faceted experience. It is a time to celebrate the gifts of life, to share religious community, to affirm our moral values, to gain strength, courage and comfort, and to be challenged to create a better world. Church services are every Sunday at 10:30 am. Dress is casual. Children are welcome to attend the services, but may be happier in either the nursery or our religious education program (see note below). ASL (American Sign Language) interpreters are available throughout the regular church year; there is also electronic hearing assistance available.
    Parking is free until 1:00 p.m. in the Church Street lot if you stamp your ticket in the Parish House lobby.
    June Services
    June 6, Thomas Mikelson preaching, "Newborn Bards." Emerson, in his Divinity School Address in 1838, addressed the seniors of Harvard Divinity School as "Newborn Bards of the Holy Ghost." In honor of all those among us heading into ministry, we explore the possible meanings of Emerson's image. We will also honor our high school graduating seniors and say farewell to intern Marc Fredette.

    In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can't build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery and death. I see the world gradually being turned into a wilderness, I hear the ever-approaching thunder, which will destroy us, too, I can feel the suffering of millions, and yet, if I look up into the heavens, I think that it will all come out right, that this cruelty will end, and that peace and tranquility will return again. In the meantime, I must hold up my ideals for perhaps the time will come when I shall be able to carry them out. It is worthwhile to look at one's religious, ethical and moral beliefs once in a while to see where one is doing well and where one falls short. Questioning and reflection are an important part of unitarianuniversalism.

    Looking for the light in the port of indecision...
    Looking for the light in the port of indecision... a time for reflection... I do think very seriously about some of these issues and what it means to be a Unitarian-Universalist. I have included some humor too. Part of the joy of life is our ability and willingness to laugh. Too often, I take life too seriously. We sailed from the port of indecision
    Young and wild and oh so much to learn
    The days turned into years
    As we tried to fool our fears
    But to the port of indecision, I returned.
    Jimmy Buffett

    It is worthwhile to look at one's religious, ethical and moral beliefs once in a while to see where one is doing well and where one falls short. We are so very human. It is, important to question and not to fool our fears. In the beginning, God created the Heaven and the earth.
    And the earth was without form and void;
    and darkness was upon the face of the deep.
    And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
    And God said, "Let there be light." And there was light. Genesis I try to follow the basic principals of Unitarian-Universalism The following is the core of those Unitarian-Universalist beliefs: The inherent dignity and worth of every person;

    Church of Light Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trupet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must be put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 1 Corinthians 15:51-54 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth 1 Timothy 2:3-4 Church of Light is a small and intimate church adhering to the free and progressive tradition of Universalism. The center of Universalism is that God will save all humanity. The Church of Light honors religious differences, and trusts the power of reasoned inquiry, the light of knowledge, the movement of the conscience, and the power of toleration. It is a place where people on a variety of spiritual paths come together to grow in religious depth and to learn about and embody their faithfulness in the world. The heart of the various covenants that have bound Unitarian and Universalist congregations together for over 400 years rests on the great words: freedom, reason, tolerance, and unconditional love. Although we do not subscribe to a common creed, Unitarian Universalists do commonly affirm the worth and dignity of all persons, the call to live a deeper, less superficial life, the practice of working for social justice, and the reasonable discourse between people who see the world through differing theological lenses. First Church, a lay-governed congregation, is affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA).

    UUDPR is a continental coalition of Unitarian Universalists leading the denomination's efforts to develop and promote more just and compassionate drug policies. In accordance with the denomination's new drug policy Statement of Conscience, we advocate that drug use should be a health issue, not a crime.
    The General Assembly of the Unitarian Universalist Association passed the "Alternatives to the War on Drugs" Statement of Conscience on June 22, 2002. The full document may be read by clicking on the links below. Excerpts include:
    • "Establish a legal, regulated, and taxed market for marijuana. Treat marijuana as we treat alcohol."
      "Remove criminal penalties for possession and use of currently illegal drugs, with drug abusers subject to arrest and imprisonment only if they commit an actual crime (e.g., assault, burglary, impaired driving, vandalism)."
      "Drug use, drug abuse, and drug addiction are distinct from one another. Using a drug does not necessarily mean abusing the drug, much less becoming addicted to it. Drug abuse issues are essentially matters for medical attention. We do not believe that drug use should be considered criminal behavior." "Make all drugs legally available with a prescription by a licensed physician, subject to professional oversight. End the practice of punishing an individual for obtaining, possessing, or using an otherwise illegal substance to treat a medical condition," and allow "medically administered drug maintenance" as a treatment option for drug addiction.
