News - Current ... About this page A liberal religion that emphasizes tolerance and respect and incorporates Jewish, Christian and other faith traditions, but has no creed or doctrine . It is incompatible with historical, biblical Christianity Unitarian Universalism is a liberal religion born of the Jewish and Christian traditions. We keep our minds open to the religious questions people have struggled with in all times and places.
We believe that personal experience, conscience, and reason should be the final authorities in religion. In the end religious authority lies not in a book, person, or institution, but in ourselves. We put religious insights to the test of our hearts and minds.
We uphold the free search for truth. We will not be bound by a statement of belief. We do not ask anyone to subscribe to a creed. We say ours is a noncreedal religion. Ours is a free faith.
We believe that religious wisdom is ever changing. Human understanding of life and death, the world and its mysteries, is never final. Revelation is continuous. We celebrate unfolding truths known to teachers, prophets, and sages throughout the ages.

What is Unitarian Universalism?
Unitarian Universalism is a mainline religious denomination with a more than 400-year history. During that time, our members have included Ralph Waldo Emerson, Louisa May Alcott, Henry David Thoreau, Clara Barton, e. e. cummings, Beatrix Potter, Frank Lloyd Wright, Florence Nightingale, and Adlai Stevenson. Unitarian Universalist congregations (sometimes called churches, fellowships or societies) are independant organizations but are members of the Unitarian Universalist Association . Each congregation elects its own officers, calls its own minister, and raises its own funds. There is no church hierarchy and no central authority.
Belief
This is usually the most important issue in trying to understand a religious organization: What do they believe? Unitarian Universalism is unique in that there is no single doctrine or creed to which everyone must subscribe. The following principles come closest in describing what Unitarian Universalists believe:
  • We believe in the freedom of religious expression. All individuals should be encouraged to develop their own personal theology, and to present openly their religious opinions without fear of censure or reprisal. We believe in the toleration of religious ideas. All religions, in every age and culture, possess not only an intrinsic merit, but also a potential value for those who have learned the art of listening.

    Overview:
The Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations (commonly called the Unitarian Universalist Association or UUA) is a liberal religious organization, serving the Unitarian Universalist (UU) churches of North America. The UUA was formed from the merger of the Unitarian and Universalist Churches.
Before about 1960, UUs were largely considered the most liberal of Christian denominations. Since then, the beliefs of Unitarian Universalists have become quite diverse. In June 1995, the UUA acknowledged that its sources of spirituality are: Christianity, Earth Centered Religions (Afro-American religions, Native American spirituality, Wicca, other Neopagan religions, etc.), Humanism, Judaism, other world religions, prophets, and the direct experience of mystery. Fewer than 10% identify themselves as Christians; the organization no longer qualifies as a Christian denomination; it is a multi-faith group. Unitarian Universalists value the teachings of:
    • Origen (circa 185 to 354 AD) Origen is generally considered to be one of the greatest theologians in early Christian movement ( If you were a heretic ). He stressed Jesus' humanity, and believed that God might eventually receive all people (even Satan and his demons) into heaven.

We are a "non-creedal" religion: we do not ask anyone to subscribe to a creed. Our congregations are self-governing. Authority and responsibility are vested in the membership of the congregation. Each Unitarian Universalist congregation is involved in many kinds of programs. Worship is held regularly, the insights of the past and the present are shared with those who will create the future, service to the community is undertaken, and friendships are made. A visitor to a UU congregation will very likely find events and activities such as church school, day-care centers, lectures and forums, support groups, poetry festivals, family events, adult education classes and study groups. Unitarian Universalist beliefs
The two religious organizations that became the "UUA" were originally viewed by the public as Christian churches who were defined largely by their heretical beliefs about the nature of God and the afterlife. However a gradual change started during the 19th century and continues today. It is now a multi-faith religious group. Emerson was a powerful force in starting this change. His Divinity School Address emphasized the importance of intellectual freedom and reason. Most modern day Unitarian Universalists share the following beliefs that: Each person, because of her/his humanity inherently has dignity and worth. Each person seek his/her unique spiritual path, based upon their personal life experience, the use of reason and meditation, the findings of science and her/his fundamental beliefs concerning deity, humanity, and the rest of the universe. The prime function of a clergyperson and congregation is to help the individual members to grow spiritually. All the great religions of the world, and their sacred texts, have worth.

THE FAITH OF A UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST BUDDHIST I've been a Buddhist for more than thirty years. I've also been a Unitarian Universalist for more than fifteen years. Since 1991, I've been a UU minister serving congregations in Wisconsin and Arizona. It is from this perspective that I find myself reflecting on what it might mean to be a Unitarian Universalist Buddhist. My mother was a fundamentalist Christian. My father was a Robert Ingersoll atheist. Reflecting on this, I see that perhaps I was destined to become a Unitarian Universalist. Or maybe a Buddhist. That blending of a deeply felt sense of spirituality with a fierce devotion to reason could take one to either Unitarian Universalism or Buddhism. As it turned out I found both. I remember a time not long after I left the Buddhist monastery that had been my home for several years. I needed a new spiritual home where I would not be asked to deny my previous experiences but where I could process those years of intensive monastic training, and from where I could go forward in new directions. While I felt deep appreciation for the techniques of Zen meditation and the spiritual perspectives I found at the core of Buddhism, I also felt a deep need to reconnect with my Western religious roots. I visited a number of churches, but orthodox Christianity just didn't work for me.

    Buddhism and Unitarian-Universalism:
Two Traditions Learning From Each Other By Jeff Wilson SYNOPSIS: The history of Unitarian interest in Buddhism
stretches back more than two centuries.
But it is only in recent decades that Buddhism has come to be
a visible force within UU circles,
with the creation of the Unitarian-Universalist Buddhist Fellowship
    and the phenomenal growth
of UU meditation groups across North America.
Now Buddhist texts appear in our hymnal
and it is common to hear Zen aphorisms quoted in the pulpit.
What exactly is the attraction that Buddhism holds for UUs? What can we learn from Buddhism, and what can Buddhism learn from UUism? What does UU Buddhist practice look like? OUTLINE: 1. Whispers From the East 2. Understanding the Attraction of Buddhism 3. Learning From Buddhism 4. The Wisdom of the West 5. The Practice of UU Buddhism 6. Conclusion 1. Whispers From the East Unitarian interest in Buddhism began in the late 1700s, as missionaries and trade in the East brought people in Boston into contact with Asian religion. By the mid-1800s this interest had grown from mere curiosity into attempts to understand the spiritual practices and doctrines of Buddhism.

    Unitarian Universalism
A liberal and diverse religious organization comprised of mostly atheists (or non-theists), agnostics, Humanists, liberal Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, Neopagans, etc.
  • Belief in Deity: Very diverse beliefs - Unitarian Universalists welcome all deity beliefs as well as nontheistic beliefs. Some congregations are formed for those who share a common belief, e.g. Christianity.
  • Incarnations: Very diverse beliefs, including belief in no incarnations, or that all are the embodiment of God. Some believe Christ is God's Son, or not Son but "Wayshower."
  • Origins of universe/life: Diverse beliefs, but most believe in the Bible as symbolic and that natural processes account for origins.
  • After death: Diverse beliefs, but most believe that heaven and hell are not places, but are symbolic. Some believe heaven and hell are states of consciousness either in life or continuing after death; some believe in reincarnation; some believe that afterlife is nonexistent or not known or not important, as actions in life are all that matter.
