the Spirit Watch The Unification Church By Rafael Martinez, Director, Spiritwatch Ministries A recent spate of articles in many a newspaper hail the "comeback" of the self-proclaimed spiritual leader the "Reverend" Sun Myung Moon as he once again climbs into the national limelight on his 50 state speaking tour which has taken him across the nation in the past month. The truth is, however, Moon never went away. He has simply been reinventing himself. Moon has been quietly distancing himself from the storms of controversy his political, business, and religious ambitions spawned in the 1970's, when his Unification Church's storming of America and the West from his homebase in South Korea, by recasting his public image and his organizational emphases. click here to read a collection of articles on this luncheon). But aside from his assumption of the imprimatur of religious rhetoric from those outside of his sphere of influence, Moon and his mission still haven't changed. They still seek to spread what Moon calls, as many other do, "the restoration" of Christianity into perfect unity with world religions and temporal government. He still presides over massive "Blessing" ceremonies where thousands of couples are jointly married, he still preaches that his Divine Principle revelation is the light through which all mankind will come to understand God's ways again, and his theology still asserts the kind of claims that we share below:

Yong Myung Moon was born in Cheong-Ju, a village now situated in North Korea, on January 6, 1920. He was the fifth of eight children born to a couple who converted to the Presbyterian church when young Moon was ten years old. According to official biographies, Jesus Christ appeared to Yong Myung Moon when he was sixteen, revealing that he had chosen him for a special mission. However, at that time Yong Moon did not tell anyone about this revelation which was the first of many he received. In 1938 he left his native village for Seoul, capital of Korea, where he enrolled in a course in technology. Korea in 1941 was still under Japanese occupation, and Moon went to Tokyo to study engineering at Waseda University. In 1943, in the midst of the Second World War, he returned to Korea where he worked in a construction company. He also became involved in a movement fighting for Korean independence against the Japanese. He was discovered, arrested, and imprisoned for four months by the Japanese political police. At the end of the war, during a period of great religious fervor in Korea, Sun Myung Moon decided to dedicate himself to preaching full time. He married Sun Kil Choi, a fervent Christian, in November 1943.

The Hawai'i County Planning Commission granted opponents' requests for a contested case hearing, although a date for the hearing has not been set. Foundation President Joe Tully said Moon initially considered a site in the Marshall Islands but decided instead to build a regional school on the Big Island, with students from Hawai'i making up about 20 percent of its enrollment. While there would be differences in emphasis, he said the proposed High School of the Pacific would be much like Hawai'i Preparatory Academy in Waimea, which counts Tully among its alumni. Students would be recruited from 12 Pacific island nations whose prime ministers and education leaders have written letters in support of the school, Tully said. "This is better for the community than a bunch of new subdivision homes," he said.
