Vital Information on the Unification Church
Unification Church/Tongil
The Logo of The Unification Movement When you are young, traveling on your own and perhaps without much confidence in yourself and your future, a lot of things may happen. It may happen in any part of the world. You may be contacted by young people, who are carrying out a survey. They will ask to hear your views on various issues, and listen in a friendly and sympathetic manner. The interview with these likeable persons of your own age gives you a feeling of being taken seriously. They say they come from a Christian student organization, called CARP. It is an abbreviation of Collegiate Association for Research of Principles, which may sound very normal. Gradually you become curious. You don't know, however, that CARP is a "front" organization, recruiting disciples for the Unification Church. When the CARP representatives invite you to an evening party, including dinner and entertainment, you readily accept. During the evening you receive yet another offer, this time concerning a seminar taking place in a camp nearby. Once again you agree; surely, there can be no harm in joining them to see what is going on.

Bob Waldrep One of the primary means of gaining credibility employed by Sun Myung Moon and the Unification Church is the many conferences and programs presented through its front organizations. These are usually presented as if unconnected to the Church. Yet Moon or his wife, or both, will frequently play a prominent role at the function. Typically they will bring the keynote address, in which they will present Unification theology. Claims that such front organizations are not affiliated with the Unification Church are empty when viewed in the light of the publisher's statement in the church's publication, The Unification News

October 10-12, 1998, Sheraton Mofarrej Hotel, Sao Paolo, Brazil
This is the first time I have been asked to speak on behalf of my church regarding the violations of religious rights around the world. I would like to begin my presentation by going back to 1975 and relating a horribly frightening experience. A young missionary who had recently converted to the Unification Church was standing in front of Madison Square Garden giving out pamphlets inviting people to an event. Suddenly he was attacked by a large woman. The missionary could easily have subdued her if he had wanted to fight back, but he refrained. Then, the woman was joined by two men. Together, the three of them attacked the missionary, threw him to the ground and started to kick him while they screamed, "Moonie! Moonie! Moonie!" The young man lay on the ground being kicked. His pamphlets were strewn all over the street. Yet the most horrible thing for this person was not being attacked. Previously, he had been attacked and mugged in one of those bad experiences people sometimes have in New York City. The most horrible experience in this instance was that when he looked for pity, for compassion, for empathy, for support, among the people who were around, he found none. The eyes that he found were eyes of accusation. He deserved to be kicked because he was a "Moonie."

Conference on
"Religious Freedom and the New Millenium"
Washington DC, April 17-19, 1998 The history of religious persecution of the Unification Movement or the Unification Church is very long. It started with the founder, who suffered a lot in his life. Six times he went to prison. He was tortured and suffered incredibly. I don’t want to go into detail about the different persecutions that you are already aware of, in particular here in the United States in the 1970s and ’80s—the deprogramming and all that. There is an interesting book by Carlton Sherwood entitled Inquisition. It is a masterpiece because he conducted thorough research on the background, the misunderstanding, persecution, and bigotry toward Unificationists, the Unification Church, and the worldwide Unification movement. I will focus on more recent issues. The Schengen treaty was already mentioned, and how it blocks Reverend Moon from entering not only Germany and France but nine other countries in the European Community that are signatories to this treaty. As mentioned earlier, the official reason for not allowing Reverend Moon and his wife to enter these countries is basically the alleged danger to public order. My understanding is that the Schengen Treaty was originally designed to prevent terrorists and the Mafia from entering the countries of the European Community, and now it is applied to Reverend and Mrs. Moon. This is one of the cases we are trying to resolve.

Unification Church
The Unification Church Korean Tong-il Gyo-hwi Hanja ) (officially The Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity ) was founded in by Sun Myung Moon , a Korean minister who escaped from North Korea during the Korean War Members of the Unification Church generally consider Rev. Moon to be the new Messiah . Many outside of the Unification Church consider it 'non-Christian' because of this belief. In 2002, the church published a message which it says describes a conference at which all the historical founders of all other religions have recently, in heaven , proclaimed Moon's messiahship (see Clouds of Witnesses Members were intially dubbed "Moon Children" by the U.S. media around 1973-1974, although this was nickname was quickly shortened to " Moonies " the term is now primarily used by critics.
Rev. Moon, who is said to enjoy being teased , joked that critics were "Moonies" reflecting the light of "Sunnies" (his followers) and that both should try to become "Kingies".

The Unification Church - An Introduction
The basic belief of the Unification Church is that humanity is to be restored to its original perfect state by a principle of indemnity, by which all sin and wrong in the world must be put right at the proper time. The Reverend Sun Myung Moon teaches that the coming of a new Messiah is near and will occur in Korea. This second coming will complete the restoration, and the Messiah will marry a new Eve, found a sinless humanity, and establish God's kingdom on earth. Members of this church are directed to follow puritanical sexual mores, since the misuse of love is believed to have been the original sin of the Archangel, Adam, and Eve. The Church is officially named The Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity. Rev. Moon communicates with Moses and Buddha, among other spiritual masters, as he "travels in the spirit world." From Korea, the church has spread to over 120 countries, including Japan, Western Europe, and the United States. Moon's lectures about the revelations he has received are in his text, Won-li Kang Mon (Lectures of Principle). Adam and Eve (in the Holy Bible) are considered the first parents, and because they sinned, a second set of parents came to indemnify the fall of mankind and establish the true family ideal lost by Adam and Eve. Jesus came as the second Adam. He was not God himself, but he was related to God "as the body is related to the mind". Because Jesus' contemporaries did not support him, and therefore he did not marry, he could only complete a spiritual restoration through the Holy Spirit, who played the role of Eve. The material world has remained under the power of Satan to the present day, but Satan will soon be vanquished by the new Messiah.

The founder and leader of the Unification Church is Sun Myung Moon who was born in Korea on January 6, 1920. His family converted to Christianity when he was ten and became members of the Presbyterian Church.
The Vision
At age 16 young Moon experienced a vision while in prayer on a Korean mountainside. Moon claims that Jesus Christ appeared to him in the vision admonishing him to carry out the task that Christ had failed to complete. Jesus supposedly told Moon that he was the only one who could do it. Finally, after much repeated asking by Jesus, Moon accepted the challenge. Moon spent the next few years of his life preparing for the great spiritual battle ahead. The years between his "conversion" experience and his coming to America are shrouded in much controversy. For documentation on those intervening years we would recommend The Moon is Not the Son by James Bjornstad, Minneapolis: Dimension Books/Bethany House Press, 1976.
Moon Comes to America
After achieving success with his new religion in the Far East, especially South Korea, Moon came to America at the end of 1971 and his cult began to flourish. Today they claim some two million members worldwide.

It did not gain much attention or much of a following outside of Korea until Moon moved to the United States in the early 1970s. The Unification Church is characterized by a specialized interpretation of the Bible and further revelations made by God to Moon, who has proclaimed himself as the successor of Jesus Christ. Members of the church who are single are "matched" by Moon to an appropriate partner and then married along with large numbers of other couples in huge ceremonies.

The Unification Church desperately wants to portray itself as a mainline legitimate religious group. But the use of deception, insider/outsider doctrines, and information control relegates the Unification Church to the status of a cult. EXAMPLES OF THE USE OF DECEPTION BY
THE UNIFICATION CHURCH DID MARY HAVE SEX WITH ZACHARIAH! One characteristic of many cults is a form of information control which cult watchers call "outsider" doctrines and "insider" doctrines (e.g. see the book Combatting Cult Mind Control by Steve Hassan, a former Unification Church member, p. 66). DECEIVING CHRISTIAN MINISTERS Several years ago the Unification Church put forth massive concerted efforts towards gaining the sympathy, acceptance and support of Christian Ministers, sending over 7,000 of them on all expense paid trips to Korea. While there the Ministers attended lectures about the teaching of the Unification Church, which the Unification Church said was to seek to promote understanding of what they really teach. Concerning these trips and lectures David Racer, Jr. writes in his book, Not For Sale "The purpose of these trips was to give clergy a close look at Moon's work....The purpose of all this was not to convert anyone to their theology
