Venezuela Restricts Unification Church Christianity Today/November 17, 1997. By Kenneth D. MacHarg The government of Venezuela has banned the activities of the Unification Church after a long-festering controversy. Officials say that the church's followers held invalid visas that made their presence illegal. Similar steps have been taken recently by Honduras, El Salvador, and Costa Rica. The deportations in Central America followed calls by Protestant and Catholic churches troubled by the growing presence and influence of the Unification Church. In Venezuela, church officials have denied allegations that illegal immigrants have been imported and charges that it encourages youths to leave home. The decision came after months of controversy and allegations in local newspapers that church members practice polygamy and abduct children. Vice Justice Minister Kurt Nagel says the main reason for the ban is because missionaries and members are foreigners on tourist visas who really have no tourist intentions. More than 100 Japanese women, all of them followers of the Korean-born Sun Myung Moon, founder of the Unification Church, had entered the country in recent months using short-term tourist visas.

Hadden Department of Sociology University of Virginia Lecture: Unification Church Lecture Outline: Reverend Sun Myung Moon and His Movement Unification Beliefs The Future of the Movement Part I The Reverend Moon and His Movement The Unification Church (officially, The Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity) was founded in 1954 by Young Myung Moon in Pusan, South Korea. Moon, who changed his name to Sun Myung Moon (meaning "someone who has clarified the Truth, or Shining Sun and Moon) has a vision of Jesus when he was 16 years old. In that visit, he was advised that he had been choosen to fullfill the mission of Jesus. He was a prisoner of war during the Korean War. After the war, he walked from North Korea, where he had been inprisioned, to Pusan in the Southeast where he took up his ministry. There are several good sources that detail the early life of Reverend Moon and his church. For class, we will view a short videotape (12:30 min) produced by the Unification Chruch entitled "The Great Victory of the True Parents." From the Unification Church to the Unification Movement, 1994-1999: Five Years of Dramatic Changes By Massimo Introvigne - An expanded version of this paper will be part of Massimo Introvigne’s book "The Unification Church", to be published in the series "Studies in Contemporary Religion" by Signature Books At the level of the canonical texts, a color-coded version of Wolli Kangron (the "exposition of the Divine Principle"), was published on September 30, 1994, and became the primary standard reference until November 1,1997. At that latter date the Reverend Moon began the tradition of Hoon Dok Hae, including a daily study session in the morning, for which excerpts from his sermons were prepared, and regarded as "complementary expression of the Completed Testament Word," together with the Wolli Kangron. Another relevant change saw the Reverend and Mrs. Moon shift the focus of their activity from North America to South America. In numerous speeches the Reverend Moon referred to North America as the equivalent of the Protestant North Europe and Latin America of the Catholic Southern Europe.
