Why Do We Not Remember Our Past Lives?
ON RE-INCARNATION OR RE-BIRTH WHAT IS MEMORY ACCORDING TO THE THEOSOPHICAL TEACHING? E NQ. The most difficult thing for you to do, will be to explain and give reasonable grounds for such a belief. No Theosophist has ever yet succeeded in bringing forward a single valid proof to shake my scepticism. First of all, you have against this theory of re-incarnation, the fact that no single man has yet been found to remember that he has lived, least of all who he was, during his previous life. T HEO. Your argument, I see, tends to the same old objection; the loss of memory in each of us of our previous incarnation. You think it invalidates our doctrine ? My answer is that it does not, and that at any rate such an objection cannot be final. E NQ. I would like to hear your arguments. T HEO. They are short and few. Yet when you take into consideration (a) the utter inability of the best modern psychologists to explain to the world the nature of mind; and (b) their complete ignorance of its potentialities, and higher states, you have to admit that this objection is based on an

William Quan Judge (1851 - 1896)
"Remember that life is the outcome of the Ever-Living. If you have come to comprehend a little of the mystery of life, and can value its attractions according to their worth; these are no reasons why you should walk forth with solemn countenance to blight the enjoyments of other men. Life to them is as real, as the mystery is to you. Their time will come as yours has, so hasten it for them, if you can, by making life brighter, more joyous, better."
from Musings On The True Theosophist's Path William Q. Judge was born in Dublin, Ireland. He emigrated to the United States with his family when he was 13 years old. At age 21, he became a naturalized citizen. That same year he passed the New York state bar exam. As an attorney, he specialized in commercial law. In 1874, Judge met Col. H. S. Olcott and, through him, H.P. Blavatsky. The following year the three were instrumental in founding the Theosophical Society. Following the publication of HPB's book, Isis Unveiled (1877), HPB and Olcott went to India to establish the TS there, leaving Judge to carry on the work in the United States. They corresponded regularly and Judge visited India in 1884. After his return he started a monthly magazine

The Debatable Land between This World and the Next, The other contrivance is described and illustrated in the monograph entitled Researches in the Phenomena of Spiritualism, by Mr William Crookes, F.R.S., Editor of the Quarterly Journal of Science, I mention these two mechanical contrivances merely to show those who, perhaps, have never enquired into the matter, but have nevertheless fallen into the common error of thinking the phenomena to be all deceptions, that the utmost care has been taken by the cleverest scientists to guard against the possibility of fraud in the course of their experiments. If ever there was a fact of science proved, it is that a new and most mysterious force of some Quarterly Journal of Science buna Mr Crookes found the force-current to be extremely variable in the same medium on different days, and, in the medium from minute to minute, its flow was highly erratic. In his book he gives a number of cuts to illustrate these variations, as well as of the ingenious apparatus he employed to detect them.

Annie Besant's Quest for Truth: Christianity, Secularism, and New Age Thought
    by Mark Bevir
    Abstract
Annie Besant's Quest for Truth: Christianity, Secularism, and New Age Thought
    The Dilemmas Posed

We can unpack Besant's doubts in terms of the questions she asked and the sorts of answers she required. Her most basic question concerned the inspiration of the Bible. She recalled her attempt to harmonise the gospels and questioned their historical veracity. She read Renan's study of the historical life of Jesus followed by several more academic works of historical criticism, most of which suggested the Bible did not offer a record of events as seen by eye-witnesses. Furthermore, she took a keen interest in recent scientific discoveries, including the theory of evolution, which clearly contradicted several Biblical doctrines. Later she recalled how 'Darwin had done much towards freeing me from my old bonds.'
The experience of doubt set up various themes that then gave continuity to Besant's multifarious activities. With respect to the physical nature of the universe, these themes were, first, a somewhat mystical concern with truth, and, second, an insistence on natural explanations incorporating current scientific knowledge. With respect to the moral nature of the universe, these themes were, first, a concern with social duty within a humanitarian context, and, second, an insistence on a natural account of a just order in which everyone receives what they deserve and from which we can eliminate evil. These themes run through the whole of the rest of her life.

"We assert that the divine spark in man being one and identical in its essence with the Universal Spirit, our "spiritual Self" is practically omniscient, but that it cannot manifest its knowledge owing to the impediments of matter. Now the more these impediments are removed, in other words, the more the physical body is paralyzed, as to its own independent activity and consciousness, as in deep sleep or deep trance, or, again, in illness, the more fully can the inner Self manifest on this plane. This is our explanation of those truly wonderful phenomena of a higher order, in which undeniable intelligence and knowledge are exhibited. " [Madame Blavatsky] "...we are imprisoned in the body, like an oyster in his shell." [The Socrates of Plato, Phaedrus To the philosopher, the body is "a disturbing element, hindering the soul from the acquisition of knowledge..." "...what is purification but...the release of the soul from the chains of the body?"

Alice A. Bailey - image from Atmanet
A prolific writer on mysticism and the founder of an international esoteric movement, Alice Bailey was born on 16th June 1880, in Manchester, the daughter of an engineer. After a cloistered upbringing she entered on a period of evangelical work with the British army, which took her to India. In 1907 she married Walter Evans, whom she had met while he was serving in the army in India, and they emigrated to America, where he became an Episcopalian minister. The marriage was not a success, and after the birth of three daughters she obtained a separation and later a divorce. In America she discovered the works of Madame Blavatsky and became active in the Theosophical Society . The narrow, dogmatic Christianity which she had previously followed gave way to wider spiritual horizons, though the figure of Christ remained central to her beliefs. She later grew disillusioned with the petty intrigues of the Theosophical Society and ceased to play an active part in it, but she always recognized the valuable part that Theosophy had played in her life. Blavatsky's doctrine of occult Masters led her to identity a spirit that, she said, had guided her from the age of fifteen, with the Theosophical Kut Humi. In 1919 she said she was contacted by the spirit of another individual whom she called 'the Tibetan' and identified with the occult adept Djual Khool mentioned by Blavatsky. After some initial reluctance she agreed to be his amanuensis. The result was a series of books which she claims the Tibetan (whose name she spelt "Djwhal Khul") dictated through an inner voice, and which she wrote down word for word. The most popular, also the most unreadable, is the weighty

term for the synthesis of religion, philosophy and science. It is an endeavor to combine the mutual enrichment of the Eastern and Western worlds. Theosophy is not a religion since is has no dogma, creed, or ritual.
    History:
The term theosophy is derived from the Greek theos (god) and sophia (wisdom), which denotes a philosophical-religious system that clams absolute knowledge of the existence and nature of the deity. This system is distinctly separate from the system put forth by the founders of the Theosophical Society in 1875.
Originally this knowledge or theosophy, it was thought, could be attained through individual revelation or the use of some higher faculty. The transcendent characteristic of a godhead is what differentiates theosophical systems from speculative or absolute philosophical systems that generally proceed deductively from the idea of God. In the initial theosophical systems God was conceived as the transcendent source of being, from whom human beings in their natural state are far removed. Such knowledge is divinely inspired, and is not a set of beliefs superimposed on humankind. This knowledge or wisdom is considered to underlie the teaching of all religion.
The concepts of Theosophy have occurred in philosophic systems China, India, and Egypt, and in the works of the

T HE K ABALA AND THE K ABALISTS
THE Theosophists of the Middle Ages drew their occult knowledge from two streams of thought which, long before, had sprung from a common source. One of these streams was the Hermetic philosophy, the other was the Kabala. In our modern dictionaries the Kabala is defined as "the mystic Theosophy of the Hebrews." The prominent Kabalistic writer, Dr. Christian D. Ginsburg, speaks of it as a system of religious philosophy, or Theosophy, which not only exercised a powerful influence upon the Jews for hundreds of years, but also captivated the minds of some of the greatest thinkers of Christendom. What is known today as the Kabala is a highly complex system having four distinct divisions. The first, or practical Kabala, deals principally with ceremonial magic. The second division, or the literal Kabala, is subdivided into three sections: (1) the Gematria, which discusses the numerical value of Hebrew words; (2) the Notaricon

A term derived from the Greek theos ('god') and sophia ('wisdom') which means wisdom of or about God. In a general sense, theosophy refers to a broad spectrum of occult or mystical philosophies, often pantheistic in nature; i.e., a religious philosophy or speculation about the nature of the soul based on mystical and occult insights into the nature of God. The Western theosophical tradition may be said to be derived from the hermetic tradition of the Renaissance and post-Renaissance and is characterized by an emphasis on the hidden tradition passed down in a succession from the ancients. This tradition is thought to provide a key to nature and to humanity's place in the universe. More specifically, the term Theosophy refers to the beliefs of a religious sect, the Theosophical Society, its offshoots, and the doctrines held by its members, which incorporated aspects of Buddhism and Brahmanism. The most important early figure in the movement was Helena Petrovna Blavatsky , who, along with Colonel Henry Steel Olcott (1832-1907) and William Q. Judge

    ABOUT THE THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY
THE THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY is worldwide and has flourished in New York since its founding here in 1875. Our commitment to integrative education and cultivating the spiritual growth of humanity is deeply rooted. Our work is grounded in three Objects:
  • To form a nucleus of the universal brotherhood of humanity without distinction of race, creed, sex, caste, or color. To encourage the comparative study of religion, science and philosophy. To investigate unexplained laws of nature and the powers latent in humanity.
  • The Theosophical Society is composed of students, belonging to any religion or to none, who are united by their approval of the above Objects; by their wish to remove religious antagonisms and draw people together; and their desire to study religious, scientific, and philosophical truths and share the results of their studies with others. Their bond of union is not the profession of a common belief, but a common search and aspiration for Truth. They hold that Truth is to be sought in study, reflection, purity of life, and devotion to high ideals. They regard Truth as a prize to be striven for, not a dogma to be imposed by authority.
