Buddhism
BUDDHA . Buddhism has many concepts akin to Hinduism like karma and reincarnation. Buddha suggested that life is full of sufferings and one must act in a way to escape from them. He laid down four basic principles (TRUTHS) to achieve that:
  • All life is sorrow and suffering Human suffers due to desire or selfcenteredness
  • Overcome desire
  • Desire can be ended by following the eight fold path- right belief, intention, speech, action, work, effort, thinking, and meditation.

What is Usui-Do?
Usui-Do is a meditative, spiritual system. Its purpose is to maintain unity of the self (body, mind and spirit) through harmony and balance. This is performed in an unconditional and nonjudgmental manner. A set of "affirmations" form the basis of the entire system. This is what the affirmations look like in Japanese exactly as Usui himself arranged them!
Usui-Do is a close reconstruction of Usui's system as presented by Yuji Onuki, a student of Toshihiro Eguchi who gave training to both Melissa Riggall and Dave King in Morocco in 1971. Additional information was provided by several surviving students of Usui including a Tendai Buddhist nun who was born in the 29th year of Meiji (1897) and who had trained with and assisted Usui-sensei from 1920 until 1926. The nun remembers Usui's departure for Fukuyama in 1926 and confirmed that Usui had received Tendai Buddhist training at an early age and remained Tendai all his life. In 1995 Melissa and Dave further studied with Tatsumi, a student of Hayashi from 1927 to 1931. Tatsumi owned notes copied from those of Hayashi some of which were created by Usui himself. Here is a brief history:

THOMAS P. KASULIS
3 Metaphysical vision of ancient Japanese esoteric Buddhism
Although already a significant presence in the Nara period, only in the Heian period (794–1185) did Buddhism undergo a profound process of philosophical development and Japanization. Two Buddhist thinkers were particularly influential: Kūkai (774–835; posthumous title, Kōbō Daishi) and Saichō (767–822; posthumous title, Dengyō Daishi). Of the two, Kūkai’s philosophical contribution was the more comprehensive. He went to China in 804 to study esoteric Buddhism and, upon his return two years later, founded Japanese Shingon Buddhism. The analytic and systematic character of Kūkai’s writings may well qualify him as the first true philosopher in Japanese history. For Kūkai, reality is fundamentally a person. The entire cosmos is no more than the thoughts, words and deeds of the Buddha called Dainichi (literally the ‘Great Sun’). Dainichi is not the creator of the universe; Dainichi is the universe. In a perpetual state of enlightened meditation, Dainichi performs the three great practices of esoteric Buddhism: the chanting of sacred syllables ( mantras ), the visualization of geometrical arrays of symbols (

3 Universal and particular
Three interrelated themes display the mutual accommodation of relative and absolute, universal and particular: the locus of liberation, its actuality and the equality of beings. Indian Mahāyāna sūtras introduced the idea that liberation does not lead to a transcendent realm different from this world, but they often spoke of the ‘three immeasurable eons’ required for its attainment. In contrast, many seminal Buddhist thinkers in Japan developed one Chinese view of the locus of liberation: the idea of becoming a buddha in this very body ( sokushin jōbutsu ). For Saichō (767–822), the founder of the Tendai school, it meant only a partial realization of buddhahood; but by the time of Tendai scholar Annen (841–89?) it referred to buddhahood attained in this very life. Kūkai (774–835), founder of the rival Shingon school, taught that yogic practices involving body ( mudra s or symbolic hand gestures), speech ( mantras ) and mind (mental concentration and visualizations) could unify the practitioner with the Buddha Mahāvairocana. Such practices made it possible to attain buddhahood in this very body. This doctrine, popularized by Kūkai, provided a theoretical basis for the bodily aspects of practice and the enactment of rituals that were important especially in the esoteric traditions of Tendai and Shingon Buddhism.

BUDDHISM
Chapter 25 Back to previous page
B uddhism began in India about five hundred years before the birth of Christ. The people living at that time had become disillusioned with certain beliefs of Hinduism including the caste system, which had grown extremely complex. The number of outcasts (those who did not belong to any particular caste) was continuing to grow. Moreover, the Hindu belief of an endless cycle of births, deaths and rebirths was viewed with dread. Consequently, the people turned to a variety of beliefs, including the worship of animals, to satisfy this spiritual vacuum. Many different sects of Hinduism arose, the most successful being that of Buddhism, which denies the authority of the vedas.
The Buddha
Buddhism, unlike Hinduism, can point to a specific founder. However, in Buddhism, like so many other religions, fanciful stories arose concerning events in the life of the founder, Siddhartha Gautama (fifth century B.C.).

Saicho : The Establishment of the Japanese Tendai School > Customer Review #1: Definitive!

This Berkeley Buddhist series volume is the definitive work of the founder of Tendai Buddhism in Japan. This volume of the series steps you through the beginning of Saichos life into his later years fighting for an ordination platform on Mount Hiei. Included are details concerning the rise of Tendai Buddhism away from the influential Buddhism of Nara. Saichos views of the bodhisattva precepts and his wish to move away from the Hinayana goals of the Ssu fen lu precepts. This is a treasure of Buddhist history in the Heian period. This work is a must for any serious Buddhist researcher. Critical for any Tendai researcher to read.

Original Enlightenment and the Tranformation of Medieval Japanese Buddhism (Studies in East Asian Buddhism, 12) > Customer Review #1: A Benefit for Eggheads (like me)

This book was pretty weighty - real live scholarly work, rather than simple sectarian gloss. I particularly enjoyed the way Professor Stone placed the religious leaders of the time into their proper historical context and showed the way the traditions cross-pollenated with each other. The part on Nichiren was most informative, and gave an objective perspective on the events which occurred after Nichirens death. Cool pictures of lots of mandalas, too.

Buddhism originated in India in the 6th century BC. It consists of the teachings of the Buddha, Gautama Siddhartha. Its central theories are that human life is full of suffering due to worldly desires, illness, death and the loss of loved ones. By getting rid of desires and attachments, one can achieve the state of enlightenment (Nirvana) and escape suffering and the circle of reincarnations. Buddhism was imported to Japan in 538 or 552 in form of a present from the king of the friendly Korean kingdom of Kudara (or Paikche). The new religion was welcomed by the ruling nobles while the common people did not understand its complex theories. After a few conflicts with the native religion Shinto , the two religions soon were able to co-exist harmonically and even complemented each other. During the Nara period , the great Buddhist monasteries in Nara , for example the Todaiji, gained strong political influence which was one of the reasons for the government to move the capital first to Nagaoka (784) and then to Kyoto (794). Nevertheless, the problem of politically ambitious and even militant monasteries remained a main issue for the governments during many centuries of
