BUDDHISM REACHES COMPUTER AGE
Project puts ancient canon on CD-ROM
BERKELEY-The path to enlightenment now crosses the information superhighway. University of California Professor Lewis Lancaster has supervised putting all 115 volumes of the Buddhist canon in the ancient language of Pali on a single CD-ROM disk, condensing tens of thousands of pages into a whisper-thin slice of technology. One day, he even hopes to take the Buddha on line. The merger of Buddhist wisdom with computer wizardry has been amazing, said Lancaster. "Thousands of pages are being put in every year, so our whole discipline of study will be revolutionized by this," he said. Putting Buddha on disk has many advantages. One is space. The Pali text, one of several versions of the canon, used to run to more than 50,000 pages. Now, it fits in the palm of a hand. Scholars stand to save money as well as storage. The disks are being sold for $299. The printed texts cost $12,000. But the most important advantage of the computerized canon is the way it reduces weeks of thumbing through texts to a few taps of the keyboard.

f you open any newspaper or magazine that has an "alternative health" section, you will find an advertisement for a Reiki practitioner or Master. Reiki healing is a technique that has been embraced by the west since it was brought to America from Japan by a lady called Hawayo Takata, and you can find Reiki healers all over the planet. However, it is only in the last couple of years that Western practitioners have had the opportunity to learn about Reiki's true origins and its original techniques. The way that Reiki has been presented and taught in the West is very different from what Reiki was supposed to have been. The commonly taught history of Reiki says that it was developed by Dr Mikao Usui, a Christian theologian, who was prompted to go on a great quest to discover a healing technique, after being questioned by his students about the way that Jesus healed. The story goes that Usui travelled the world, studying theology in Japan and America, and that Reiki came into being after a moment of enlightenment on Mount Kurama, where Usui saw symbols in bubbles of light before him, and came down the mountain with the Reiki system. Almost all books on Reiki will present this story.

Japan By the fourth century CE , Buddhism had made its way into Korea and from there, into Japan during in 538 CE . The king of the Korean kingdom of Paekche was at war with a neighboring state sent a delegation to Japan seeking support. The ambassadors brought with them Buddhist statues and scriptures. By the end of the century - through the patronage of the Prince Regent Shotoku (573-622 CE) - Buddhism had become the state religion. In the eight century CE , the emperor Shomu ( 724-749 CE) encouraged the widespread building of temples throughout the land. Six schools of Chinese Buddhism were also imported during this period:

Major insights into Tendai Buddhism Original Enlightenment and the Transformation of Medieval Japanese Buddhism by Jacqueline Ilyse Stone (Studies in East Asian Buddhism, No. 12: University of Hawaii Press) Being recognized as a major study in Buddhist studies and recognized as one of the best religious studies books of 2000, Original Enlightenment and the Transformation of Medieval Japanese Buddhism represents some important historical and conceptual clarifications of perennial themes in Mahayana Buddhism.
From flyleaf: Original enlightenment thought (hongaku shiso) dominated Buddhist intellectual circles throughout Japan's medieval period. Enlightenment, this discourse claims, is neither a goal to be achieved nor a potential to be realized but the true status of all things. Every animate and inanimate object manifests the primordially enlightened Buddha just as it is. Seen in its true aspect, every activity of daily life?eating, sleeping, even one's deluded thinking?is the Buddha's conduct. Emerging from within the powerful Tendai school, ideas of original enlightenment were appropriated by a number of Buddhist traditions and influenced nascent theories about the kami (local deities) as well as medieval aesthetics and the literary and performing arts.

Links With thanks to Chris Marsh and Andrew Bowling The New Reiki History Main sources of information on these pages are still living students of Mikao Usui and Chujiru Hayashi and other people in the Japanese Reiki community. Until a few years ago we were told that Mikao Usui was Christian monk teaching at the Doshisha school in Kyoto, working for 7 years with the beggars in Kyoto and who studied at the University of Chicago etc. No evindence has been found to prove these stories. They were only created in order to make Reiki more acceptable in the post-war mainly Christian Amerikan society. M ikao U sui was born on 15th. August 1865 in the village of 'Taniai-mura' (now called Miyama-cho) in the Yamagata district of Gifu prefecture, Kyoto. The Usui family were Tendai Buddhist followers. They came from a Samurai background and were 'Hatamoto', that means they were from the higher Samurai ranks. He also had a sister Tsuru and two brothers, Sanyai who studied medicine and became a wellknown doctor in the Tokyo area and Kuniji who became a policeman in Gifu prefecture . 'The Usui family crest was Moon and Stars, these were the symbols of 'Myoken Bodhisattva', the icons for Samurai and family crest of the Chiba's. This is the crest on the Grave Stone of Mikao Usui.

Originally published in "Korin," July, 1991 Of the many words and teachings that Shinran Shonin has left us, perhaps one of the most central and important messages is his statement that he was "Neither Priest Nor Layman." This statement occurred in a certain historical context that needs background explanation. Shinran’s early years of life were spent training and practicing Tendai Buddhism on Mt. Hiei, the established monastery and center for Buddhist learning near Kyoto. At that time, of course, there was no sect of Buddhism as Jodo Shinshu, and Shinran practiced a very arduous form of Buddhist discipline that requires a monastic lifestyle. Shinran became a monk from around the age of nine, and practiced on Mt. Hiei until the age of twenty-nine. Tendai Buddhism and its practices still exist, even to this day, and monks are still carrying out the difficult disciplines to enlightenment that Tendai Buddhism prescribes. Some of these practices are unbelievably difficult. One in particular, called

BUDDHISM On-line Buddhist Resources Version 1.1, March 27, 1998 This webpage is the Buddhism portion of a reference work on Religions of the World. The arrangement of material may be modified upon the advice of knowledgable Buddhists. Additional topical categories may be included and some of the existing categories my be subdivided. The intent is not to include all possible web-sites. The current list of about 150 references has been distilled from about 1,500 similar web-pages. Newer, and sometime better, webpages make their appearance continuously. In selecting material to be listed here, information content is the primary consideration. Web-sites that load quickly, are well designed, and that contain information not encountered elsewhere are given preference. Sites that exist only to sell products, offer off-line instruction or that merely link to other sources of information are usually not selected. Also, no web-page that opposes any other religion will be listed. Readers are encouraged to distribute copies or provide links for use by others. I simply ask that no changes be made to this file, and that users communicate to me any problems they might discover and any recommendations they might wish to make. Please keep in mind that some links, especially those to sites outside the U.S., may not be operational at all times, especially on weekends. All web pages listed here were verified as working before release of this version. However, some links found within those web-pages will be outdated.
