  • Control Self-consciousness Individuality Creative challenge Self-deification
One of the main magical focuses of the Temple is the Word of the Aeon of Set - " Xeper ", an Ancient Egyptian word meaning "to become" or "I have come into Being". This is both watchword and an Initiatory focus - to become the best individual one is able to be, to become like the Prince of Darkness - an eternal independent entity - rather than the immersion of consciousness as proposed by White Magic and associated religious and philosophical schools. Australian Setians have a number of resources to interact with, including the Nan Madol Pylon and the Eternal Flame Pylon, which are the current Australasian Pylons. A number of Setian Orders, Elements and informal study groups are also active in Australasia. The Temple of Set has been active in Australasia since 1975. This website is designed for Setians and the interested public to learn more about the Temple of Set in Australasia. It is a work in progress, suggestions or questions are welcome.

Temple of Set
From Wikipedia , the free encyclopedia.
The Temple of Set considers itself today's leading religious and philosophical initiatory organization of the Left-Hand Path The Temple of Set was founded in 1975 by Michael Aquino and a few other members of the Church of Satan , who left that organization because of disagreements with its administration and philosophy. The Temple has grown in many directions since the schism, and is now very different from the organization it left (something of which the members of the Church of Satan will happily remind you). The Temple of Set is a philosophical organization. Its activities revolve around the philosophies represented by the ancient Egyptian principle of Xeper (roughly translated as "self-improvement" or "self-creation", with alternate spellings of Khepher, Kefer, and other variations), and the ideals represented by their modern understanding of Set, once called a god by the ancient Egyptians. The Temple of Set is an initiatory organization, dedicated to the growth and development of its members. Setians recognize several levels or degrees of initiation, and identify their members by their degree. This helps the members recognize and work with their relative peers. It also helps the less experienced members identify the more senior initiates when they have difficult questions with which they need help. The Temple of Set is a religion , incorporated in and recognized as a religion by the state of California and the federal government of the U.S.A. Its priesthood represents not only the Temple and its organization, but they also represent the being they call Set. The Temple of Set is an unusual religion in several ways:

Balanone's Temple of Set Information
Theme: Information (and discussion) about the Temple of Set , Setian Philosophy, and related topics
The Temple of Set has mostly tried to maintain a low profile since its beginning in 1975. Partly because of this low profile, partly because of its ties with modern Satanism, partly because of the freedom and individuality of its members, partly because of the background of its founding members, and partly for other reasons, the Temple of Set has also had a controversial reputation. The purpose of this web site is to provide basic information about the Temple of Set in an honest and mostly objective manner.

Balanone:
Balanone has been an active member of the Temple of Set since early 1976, and so is intimately familiar with Setian philosophy and practice. While this web site is just one person's statement, and not an official statement from/by the organization, this person has the depth of experience to be reasonably confident in his accuracy. Corrections, additions, and differences of opinion from other members of the Temple of Set are more than welcome, and within reason all such will be included in this site. I also welcome corrections, additions, and suggestions from others as well.
The Temple of Set
The Temple of Set is probably best described as an initiatory magical order of the Left Hand Path, a description which probably doesn't mean much to those without occult backgrounds.

I can't answer this in 25 words or less, so bear with me! If you consider Satanism to be anti-Christian Devil worship, the answer is no. The Temple of Set practices a completely non-Christianized, positive "high Satanism". To understand what we mean by this, a bit of history of the Temple is needed: While the TOS as an organization was formally incorporated and recognized by both state and federal governments in 1975 CE, its magical and philosophical roots are prehistoric, originating in mankind's first apprehension that there is "something different" about the human race - a sense of SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS - that places humanity apart from all other known forms of life. Ancient religions - of which those of Egypt are generally acknowledged the eldest - either exalted or feared this self-consciousness. Those which exalted it took the position that the human psyche is capable of opposition to and domination of the forces of nature. The psyche-worshipping, reasoning religions - or schools of initiatory philosophy - attained levels of abstract knowledge that made them mysterious to the masses. In a few societies, such as Egypt and Greece, such groups were respected and admired. More often, however, their exclusive elitism and "supernatural" activities made them objects of resentment and persecution.

temple of set
by Alex Burns (alex@disinfo.com) - December 17, 2002
. . . In his role as tormentor of the wicked, Set appears in various guises in the Duat (Egyptian Underworld). He is the heart-eating dragon SetNakt (Set is Mighty). SetNakt eats the heart (intellect) of the evil individual. He is the figure of Set the Watcher, who observes the progress of the Boat of Re. This role is one of the observer of the Real, a role that he also fills in slaying the demon Apep. Nightly, the Boat of Re is challenged by the non-created serpent Apep. Apep has the power to hypnotize the other inhabitants of the boat. The other gods fall into a trance, the Boat stops, and Set descends to fight the demon. He kills Apep . . . Set is a destroyer of delusional thinking. He destroys that which has failed to Become real. As such he is a tester of the dead - a god of Limits. In short, Set works in the subconscious as a destroyer of delusion.

Welcome to the Temple of Set Talk page. Please feel free to make comments here concerning improving the quality of the Temple of Set article. Thank you. Balanone Since the concept of "xeper" is so central to the Temple, do you think you could get permission from Mr. Webb to use a short excerpt from one of his books, as an entry for "xeper"? Legally of course someone could use a very short quote under Fair Use, but it would be better if the entry could include that "published with permission..." clause. Perhaps the Egyptian hieroglyph would also be appropriate here? RL Barrett 21:21 May 6, 2003 (UTC) I've forwarded this request to both Dr. Aquino and Don Webb. Satanism Today
Overview of Satanism and Demonolatry at the end of the century
When someone today feels drawn towards Satanism, or simply wants to find out more about it, that person will not have nearly as easy time gathering information on Satanism as it appears on the first glance.
Before experienced web surfers haste to conclude that this can't be true because there are numerous Satanic sites across the web, let us stress that the above sentence says "when someone today feels drawn towards Satanism."
We are talking about persons who are new to the subject, not Satanists who chose Left Hand Path years ago and already know who is who on the Satanic Internet.
In this case, it is exactly the number of the Satanic sites that is part of the problem. Some time ago I was in #satannet chatroom (now renamed to #COScentral) when some college girl came and said that she is doing a paper on Satanism and wanted to find about it first hand.
What followed is just the picture of the general condition of information that can be found on the net.
Before you could say- "irreconcilable differences" - entire screen was covered with arguments.

  • Year Founded:
  • Brief History: The Temple of Set developed as a schism from the Church of Satan founded by Anton LaVey. Michael A. Aquino, a former member of the Church of Satan, left the organized religion claiming that LaVey was exploiting the religion for personal gain. Aquino and a group of his followers, The Council of Nine, left the Church of Satan in order to keep the religion "pure". Similar to LaVey, Aquino wrote a book, The Book Coming Forth by Night , and it was around the specific teachings of this book that he based the belief system of his new sectarian movement. The Temple was incorporated in California as a non-profit church in 1975, receiving both state and federal recognition.
  • Sacred Texts: The Book Coming Forth by Night, The Crystal Tablet of Set, The Jeweled Tablets of Set, The Scroll of Set.
  • Cult or Sect: The goals of the Religious Movements Homepage are to (1) provide resources for objective understanding, (2) encourage appreciation of religious diversity, and (3) promote religious tolerance. The opportunity to pursue these goals is diminished when the language employed in public discourse silently carries highly negative presuppositions.

The Temple of Set is one of the most famous, dangerous and secret organizations of those who call themselves Satanists. Founded in 1975 by Michael Aquino in San Francisco, its initial membership came from the Church of Satan (C.o.S) founded by Anton LaVey; the split came as a result of members who felt there was something real and important about the magic they were exploring. There is a great difference between The Temple of Set and the Church of Satan. The C.o.S use the names Satanist and Satan symbolically. They do not believe that a real Satan exists. They use it as a way to draw attention and to mock Christianity. The Temple of Set (called Setians), believe that a real form of Satan exists called " The Prince of Darkness". They call him "Set” the TRUE Prince of Darkness". Satan is the name given to the Prince of Darkness in the Bible. Set was/is, the Egyptian god of death and the underworld.
