81. Taoism- Serenity Found
Taoist thoughts and reflections on life.
http://www.geocities.com/WestHollywood/Village/3200/intro.html
Find Serenity in the Tao
Fill your bowl to the brim and it spills over.
Keep sharpening your knife and it becomes blunt.
Chase after money and security and your heart tightens.
Care about people's approval and you are imprisoned by it.
Do your own work, then stand back.
This is the path to serenity.
I find myself hurrying after things I don't want, and worrying
myself about things I don't care about.
I have enjoyed discovering Taoism as a way of becoming,
spiritual, in the sense of re-tuning myself to the natural way of the world, simplifying my thoughts and my life, and beginning to see a way out of the compulsive, activities that so many people find themselves stuck in. We do these things to avoid looking within, and becoming at peace with ourselves. I wish you the peace that comes from living in harmony with our universe. • Introduction
The purpose of the FAQ is to provide short and concise answers to Frequently Asked Questions in the alt.philosophy.taoism newsgroup. The questions are simple as are the answers. To find further confusion refer to the APT FAQ Bibliography. This FAQ comes in three parts:
  • The FAQ Proper - This document.
  • [sez]
    TAOISM is Many Things.
  • TAOISM (DAOISM) is the philosophy of Lao Tzu (Laozi) that advocates the simplicity of existence, that teaches non-interference with natural events and the leaving of nothing undone. It is also the philosophy of Chuang Tzu (Zhuangzi) which emphasizes the relative nature of what we "know". TAOISM is the application of TAOIST philosophy to a model for living. TAOISM is a system of Chinese Religion founded on the teaching of Lao Tzu and many other Chinese TAOIST teachers.
  • [sez/ch]
    What is a TAOIST?
Tao (or Dao) literally means "The Way." It is a term used to refer to a dynamic and interactive way of being whereby one acts and lives in harmony with nature and change. A person following the Tao does not try to obstruct natural processes taking place. This kind of action, and stillness - being - requires great clarity of vision and strength of mind. To seek and follow the Tao is, then, a difficult but venerable task. The literal impossibility of expressing clearly and completely in words the perceived subtleties and pervasive nature of the Tao, or any human condition, underscores the value placed by Taoists on any individual's unique experience in the world, while also making clear the responsibility each individual has to engage the world in sincere interplay.

Zen taoism. The combining of Zen and taoism is not new. Bodhidharma practiced Taoist yoga in India. He brought Buddhism to China
    http://www.zenhall.org/Pages/tao.html
The combining of Zen and Taoism is not new. Bodhidharma practiced Taoist yoga in India. He brought Buddhism to China where it combined with Chinese Taoism to produce living Lin Chi (Rinzai) Zen. The great Korean Zen Master Won Hyo combined both practices in the Silla dynasty 1300 years ago, practicing the same Sun-do breathing we teach here today. Japanese Zen Master Hakuin strongly emphasized the importance of Taoist breathing techniques for Zen practitioners.
In the search for awakening to our Essence Mind, Zen meditation is a direct spiritual path. With awakening, all that remains is harmony, love, peace, compassion and wisdom. But with poor healthy or energy and emotional imbalances, many obstacles arise for deep sitting meditaton. Modern day Zen practitioners unknowingly are not utilizing the benefits that Taoism can bring to their practice. Also, Zen has wisdom which goes beyond the harmonizing benefits of Taoism, but Taoists do not realize this Zen wisdom and for them it is easy to become attached to their own energy.
With wisdom and pure intention, if we combine Zen and Taoism, we can enter a correct spiritual path with balanced health and purified mind, and achieve great awakening.

Eventually, Confucianism adopted many of the rituals of ancestor worship while taoism practiced augury and sooth saying. II. taoism.
    http://www.usao.edu/~usao-ids3313/ids/html/taoism.html
CHINA AND JAPAN I. RELIGIOUS ROOTS During the 2nd millennium B.C.E. the Chinese appear to have practiced forms of ancestor worship. They also employed oracle bones to elicit communications from spirits or gods. Both trendsancestor worship and the fascination with determining the possible course of future events remained part of the Chinese religious structure through the ages. Eventually, Confucianism adopted many of the rituals of ancestor worship while Taoism practiced augury and sooth saying. Long before the schools of Confucianism and Taoism developed, Chinese thinkers had already formulated a cosmic theory of a cyclic pattern of waxing and waning, of expansion and contraction. They symbolized this dynamic interplay of forces in the t'ai-chi t'u , or "Diagram of the Supreme Ultimate." As one concentrates on the diagram it seems to become a vortex of rapid circular motion, of the constant interpenetration of the archetypal poles of nature, the yin and the yang . The symbolism is sexual, but not only sexual. The yin and the yang may be considered the primal parents of the universe whose mating generates all of reality, but they are also, and more importantly, complementary principles, neither of which can exist apart from the other.

    http://www.ecotao.com/holism/
Welcome... Nature's Holism has evolved and continues to do so. The book, Nature's Holism (or ecotaoism ) provides an ecological model as an alternative to the "competitive" theory of evolution Nature's Holism - ecology and evolution:
We will examine how species associated within the same habitat evolve ( coevolution ). I will show you a holistic view of nature and ecosystems. You will see how the interdependence between long-associated (coadapted) species within an ecosystem affects the ecological structure of natural systems. Natural selection acts upon a creature within a specific niche in nature. The animal's biology is defined by this environment - its form, physiology and behaviour are shaped by the complexity of the natural world.
Some excerpts and quotes from chapters of this web page: On Evolutionary Biology:
A document, "Evolution, Science, and Society: a " white paper " on behalf of the field of evolutionary biology" states that "Evolutionary biology is the discipline that (1) describes the history of life and (2) investigates the processes that account for this history. It seeks to explain the diversity of life: the variety of organisms and their characteristics, and their changes over time." As such, biodiversity studies can be said to be part of the discipline of evolutionary biology. As a subdiscipline of evolutionary biology, this study falls within evolutionary ecology. This white paper identifies a priority research area to be "development and testing of predictive theories of the coevolution of interacting species." The focus of this electronic text is on a coevolutionary mechanism.

    V. TAOISM The Religion of the Divine Way The religions of China are rooted in ancient religious concepts. The Chinese people recognized many gods and spirits. The good spirits were known as Shen and the evil spirits were called Kwei. The common people performed sacrifices and rituals. They believed the universe was composed of the negative force of nature, Yin, and the positive force of nature, Yang. Filial piety and ancestor worship were practiced. They predicted the future by divination through the methodology of I Ching. Following the eleventh century the Chou rulers for political reasons promoted a belief in Shang Ti, the one supreme God who controlled the destiny of men and rulers. The origins of Taoism are unclear. Traditionally, Lao-tzu who lived in the sixth century is regarded as its founder. Its early philosophic foundations and its later beliefs and rituals are two completely different ways of life. Today (1982) Taoism claims 31,286,000 followers.

    Taoism and the Tao
The philosophy of Taoism is traditionally held to have originated in China with a man named Lao-tzu. Although most scholars doubt that he was an actual historical figure, tradition dates his life from 604-517 B.C. The story goes that Lao-tzu, "saddened by his people's disinclination to cultivate the natural goodness he advocated," decided to head west and abandon civilization. As he was leaving, the gatekeeper asked if he would write down his teachings for the benefit of society. Lao-tzu consented, retired for a few days, and returned with a brief work called Tao-Te Ching, "The Classic of the Way and Its Power." It "contains 81 short chapters describing the meaning of Tao and how one should live according to the Tao." The term Tao is typically translated into English as "way", but it can also be translated as "path," "road" or "course." The chief object of philosophical Taoism "is to live in a way that conserves life's vitality by not expending it in useless, draining ways, the chief of which are friction and conflict." One does this by living in harmony with the Tao, or Way, of all things: the way of nature, of society, and of oneself. Taoist philosophers have a particular concept that characterizes action in harmony with the Tao. They call it
