The Haunted Museum -. HISTORY MYSTERY OF spiritualism The Spiritualist Movement From the Beginning to Today. The Spiritualist
http://www.prairieghosts.com/spiritualism.html
- The Haunted Museum -
The Spiritualist Movement From the Beginning to Today The Spiritualist movement, like jazz, was purely an American invention. Although the idea that man was able to communicate with spirits had existed already for centuries, modern belief in such a practice came about in March 1848 in Hydesville, New York. The movement, which would come to be known as Spiritualism, would remain strong for nearly a century, enjoying its greatest revival after World War I. The practice was founded on the belief that life existed after death and that the spirit existed beyond the body. Most importantly, it was believed that these spirits could (and did) communicate with the living. THE HISTORY
Spiritualism was born at the home of the Fox family in Hydesville but legend holds that the house was haunted before the Fox Family came to live there. In those days, between 1843 and 1844, a couple named Bell occupied the cottage. In the last few months of their occupancy, a young local woman named Lucretia Pulver handled the household chores. She acted as a maid and carried out the cleaning and cooking duties for the Bell’s. One day, a young peddler came to the door of the house. He was a friendly young man and he brought with him a case of merchandise. These goods consisted of pots, pans and other useful items for the home. He stayed with the family for several days and it has been suggested that perhaps he enjoyed a closer than was proper relationship with Mrs. Bell. A short time later, Lucretia found herself fired from her position in the house. No explanation was ever given but apparently, there were no hard feelings about her dismissal. Mrs. Bell took the girl home in her wagon and before she left the house, Lucretia purchased a small kitchen knife from the peddler’s selection. She left him instructions to deliver the item to her father’s farm, but the knife never arrived.

He stated his belief in Spiritualism. Could it be? The man who created the ever-logical Sherlock Holmes believed in ghosts? Spiritualism
The Fox sisters are credited with the birth of Spiritualism. In 1848 Maggie and Katie Fox, discovered that they were able to communicate with a spirit that seemed to inhabit their home in Hydesville, New York. The spirit claimed to be a murdered man who was buried in the cellar. Spiritualism focused on communication with spirits. The movement stressed that there was indeed life after death and that communication with those who had "passed over" was entirely possible. By 1855 two million people were followers of the movement. However as time went by disorganization within the movement and fraudulent practices lead to the movement's decline. By 1900 Spiritualism had lost its popularity. After the First World War the movement once again became popular as people struggled to deal with the loss of loved ones. Early Religious Life
The Doyle family was strongly catholic. Conan Doyle was raised in that tradition but he came to question those beliefs. He declared himself an agnostic. So strong were his beliefs that he refused the help of his father’s family in establishing his medical practice. He realized that the family would have recommended him to their church connections. He felt that it would have been hypocritical to draw on that sort of support.

THEOSOPHY AND SPIRITUALISM
Article by H. P. Blavatsky
A Calcutta correspondent asks: (a) Is Occultism a science akin to Spiritualism? (b) What are the principal points in which the Theosophists and the Spiritualists differ? c ) Can a Spiritualist call himself a Theosophist without altering his faith? and vice versa? (d) I understand you do not believe in Spiritualismthen how is it that a Spiritualist has been elected President for the Bengal Branch of the Theosophical Society? To which we answer: (a) That Theosophy is a very ancient science, while Spiritualism is a very modern manifestation of psychical phenomena. It has not yet passed the stage of experimental research. (b) The difference is in our theories to account for the phenomena. We say they are mainly, though not always, due to the action of other influences than that of the disembodied conscious spirits of the dead. The Spiritualists affirm the contrary. c ) Yes; many excellent persons are both, and none need alter his faith. d )We do believe in the phenomena, but not as to their causeas above remarked. There being no religious or other testother than that of good moral character and sympathy with the objects of our Society, applied by us to those who seek for admission, the election of the Venerable Babu Peary Chund Mittra, as President of our Bengal Branch, was not only most proper, but very desirable. He is certainly the most spiritual Theosophist and most theosophic Spiritualist we have ever met.

Spiritualism Introduction The Birth of Modern Spiritualism The History of Modern Spiritualism Prominent Authors ... The Modern Seven Principles of Spiritualism Introduction The word Spiritualist "means those who attempt communication with spirit that are deceased" However most spiritualist do not believe in death and believe there is no death and that all that happens at mortal demise is that we shed off the mortal host body and live on in spirit. Most spiritualists also believe that we travel here from the spirit realms to experience life here upon the earth and that at the end of our life we are merely returning to our true home back within the spirit realms from whence we came. Spiritualism is a fairly new religion and it started in the 1800's and it has grown from America to many parts of Europe and other parts of the world such as parts of Asia... Although it has become a religion for practical reasons many spiritualist see it more as a movement of like minded and spiritual individuals that seek to develop the latent spiritual abilities in an attempt to communicate with spirit loved ones and spirit guides etc. However spiritualism has been around since the beginning of man and there are cave paintings that have been found in Europe dated at 35,000 years old that have proved cave dwelling people entered trance like states to be taken over by spirit that painted strange animals from far of countries, so forms of spiritual communication have existed since the beginning of mankind and are nothing new and there are mediums that are clairvoyant and psychic in all countries of the world even if they do not call themselves spiritualists.
