The Journal of Buddhist Ethics is the first academic journal dedicated entirely to Buddhist ethics, and is innovative in adopting a totally electronic mode of publication. In most other respects, however, it will function as a traditional scholarly journal.
The Diamond Sutra
The World's Earliest dated Printed Book. This scroll was found in 1907 by the archaeologist Sir Marc Aurel Stein in a walled-up cave at the `Caves of the Thousand Buddhas', near Dunhuang, in North-West China. It was one of a small number of printed items among many thousands of manuscripts, comprising a library which must have been sealed up in about AD 1000. Although not the earliest example of blockprinting, it is the earliest which bears an actual date. The colophon, at the inner end, reads: `Reverently [caused to be] made for universal free distribution by Wang jie on behalf of his two parents on the 13th of the 4th moon of the 9th year of Xiantong [i.e. 11th May AD 868]'.

Possibly the most useful self-help book there is. Nichiren Buddhism is a dynamic yet practical philosophy that has guided millions throughout the world. Through this simple yet powerful practice, we gain the wisdom and fortitude to challenge the obstacles and difficulties that regularly confront us, ultimately changing them into a source of immense benefit and happiness in our daily lives. And, through the results ("actual proof") that we accumulate practicing this great Buddhism, it is only natural to share those experiences and benefits with others in the spirit of helping them achieve the same results in their own lives. As one who has practiced this great Buddhism for twenty-eight years, it has been my honor to have shared with many people - friends, co-workers, colleagues, family, and acquaintances alike - the results of my "human revolution" achieved through the simple yet immensely powerful practice of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo (the primary practice of Nichiren Buddhism) and to share my experiences in applying the practice to the challenges of my daily life. As such, I can truly appreciate what Mssrs. Martin, Hochswender, Morino, and Hancock have done here in creating a superb "road map" to this great Buddhism, making even what would seem the most complicated concepts of Nichiren Buddhist philosophy and worldview easy and accessible to everyone. And, in so doing, they have created a self-help book of the highest order.

Welcome to the official website of
Singapore Soka Association
ABOUT US The Singapore Soka Association (SSA) was officially registered with the Registry of Societies in 1972 as a Buddhist society that aims to promote the understanding and practice of Nichiren Buddhism. Besides promoting Buddhist faith, the organization is also committed on working for social harmony and progress founded on the Buddhist principle of respect for the dignity of life. There are 25,000 believers participating in SSA activities presently. The Nichiren School of Buddhism was founded in 13th-century Japan by the sage Nichiren. The School flourished in its country of origin through the efforts of the lay organization Soka Gakkai (established 1930), the forerunner of the present international movement, the Soka Gakkai International (SGI). "Soka" translated to mean "value-creation", describes the core spirit of the Buddhist philosophy; that is, Buddhism is a religion of self-empowerment. The Buddhist practitioner cultivates innate potential and power, expressed in one's enhanced wisdom and spirituality to change life and environment towards positive growth. This principle of value-creation is the principle of action upheld by SGI members worldwide. Address : 10 Tampines Street 81

From Lay Movement to Religion
Publishers Weekly
This volume in Signature's Studies in Contemporary Religion series follows earlier books on Scientology and the Unification Church. Like its predecessors, it is noteworthy for its brevity and balanced approach to a controversial religious movement. Soka Gakkai ("Value-Creating Society"), an offshoot of Nichiren Buddhism that began in Japan shortly before World War II, has become an international movement with several million members. It emphasizes the power of individuals to transform themselves and then promote peace and compassion in the world. Dobbelaere discusses recurring tensions between SG leaders and Nichiren monks, the differences in SG practices around the world, and the movement's educational and cultural institutions.

Soka Gakkai
Doctrines The teachings of Soka Gakkai (Value-Creating Educational Association) are derived from those of Nichiren (see NICHIREN), via the Nichiren Shoshu sub-sect from which Soka Gakkai formally split in the 1990's. Nichiren's teachings however have been considerably modified in Soka Gakkai by the integration of the 'value-creating' (so-ka) educational philosophy of the first founder of Soka Gakkai, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi.
Central to Soka Gakkai's philsophy are the ideas of 'human revolution' (i.e. personal and social transformation) and the Tendai concept of 'one thought, three thousand worlds'. According to Soka Gakkai, human beings can change themselves, and through changing themselves change the world. Change for the better is brought about by chanting the powerful daimoku or title of the Lotus Sutra 'nam-myoho-renge-kyo'. The effect of chanting this phrase, which embodies the essence of the enlightened mind of the Buddha, is radically to elevate one's mental and spiritual state within the 3,000 possible states of mind, which range from the experience of hell to perfect supreme enlightenment. Since 'body and mind are not two' (i.e. they are a unity), the transformation of the 'inner' or mental state is reflected in transformed behaviour and therefore social influence. If enough people practice daimoku whole societies and eventually the whole world will be transformed. History Symbols The central symbol for Soka Gakkai is the gohonzon (object of worship) which comprises a wooden tablet or paper copy of the title of the Lotus Sutra, the daimoku, chanted by believers during their spiritual practice. Nichiren's name is inscribed below the title, which is surrounded by the names of various Buddhist and other Japanese divinities.

Soka Gakkai By Yohei Suda LL.B., University of Tokyo in 1999
Brief History of Soka Gakkai
Soka Gakkai, a lay Buddhist movement, was founded in 1930 by Tsunesaburo Makiguchi (1871-1944), who was the first president from 1930 to 1944, and by Josei Toda (1900-1958), who was the second president from 1951 to 1958. Its original name was Soka Kyoiku Gakkai. Both were educators converted to Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism. Makiguchi was originally an elementary school teacher. He was dissatisfied with school education in Japan at that time because it was too abstract and too elitist and it did not emphasise practical skills for ordinary people. Makiguchi also considered that apart from pedagogy, religion was important for the creation of values. He found that the teaching of Nichiren (1222-1282) was the best education method because it was mass-oriented. Nichiren studied various teachings of Buddhism and finally found that the essence of Buddhism is in Lotus Sutra, which reveals to all the people that they have potential for enlightenment without regard to individual distinctions. Nichiren advocated that following Lotus Sutra (Hokkekyo) leads everyone to happiness. Makiguchi and Toda started to follow the teaching of Nichiren and established Soka Gakkai to develop an education project based on his theories.
