Soka Gakkai International is a lay Buddhist association founded in Japan on the premise that human beings inherently possess the ability to create value in their lives and, therefore, are able to live life to the fullest while contributing to the welfare of society. "Soka" means value creation; "Gakkai," society. SGI founding principles 1. To work for the prosperity of society as good citizens, respecting the culture, customs and laws of the country where they reside. 2. To promote the development of humanistic culture and education based on the tenets of Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism. 3. To support the United Nations’ efforts for world peace by working towards the goals of the abolition of nuclear weapons, the universal renunciation of war in accordance with the spirit of the U.N. Charter, and the solution of the problems of poverty, oppression and environmental degradation which threatens our planet.
Daisaku Ikeda

Daisaku Ikeda, third president of the Soka Gakkai, was nominated as the first president of SGI, a post he continues to hold. Under his leadership and guidance the SGI has developed and expanded throughout the world.

THE POWER OF SOKA GAKKAI
GROWING REVELATIONS ABOUT THE COMPLICATED AND SINISTER NEXUS OF POLITICS AND RELIGION
EDWARD W. DESMOND/TOKYO REPORTED BY IRENE M. KUNII/TOKYO On Sept. 1, Akiyo Asaki, 50, a local assemblywoman from Higashi Murayama, a city on the western outskirts of Tokyo, walked out of her office without explanation and without taking any identification. According to police, a few hours later she climbed the external stairs of a nearby office building to the fifth floor, scaled a 1.2-m-high wall and jumped to her death. Police concluded that Asaki had taken her own lifeuntil her family protested. "She was not the type to commit suicide," says a close friend and fellow assembly member, Hozumi Yano. "She was always cheerful, even though she knew she was up against a powerful organization." That organization is Soka Gakkai, Japan's most powerful Buddhist sect. It has at least 8.12 million members; assets estimated to be as high as $100 billion; and a political offshoot, the Komeito (Clean Government Party), that has long been a force in the Diet and in regional assemblies throughout the country. In Asaki's view, Soka Gakkai (Value-creating Society) was becoming a bit too forceful. She was helping ex-Soka Gakkai members who were being harassed for quitting, and based on her own investigations, she had accused Komeito politicians of using their clout to give local government contracts to Soka Gakkai members. In recent months she had received anonymous death threats on the phone.

Soka Gakkai International
The Soka Gakkai International is the umbrella organization for affiliate lay organizations in over 186 countries practicing the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin. Founded as the Soka Kyoiku Gakkai on November 18 by Japanese educators Tsunesaburo Makiguchi and Josei Toda, the Soka Gakkai experienced a period of rapid growth after World War II in Japan . The organization was formally organized in the United States on October 13 . SGI was created as the international organization in SGI has been guided since its inception by its president, Daisaku Ikeda. A disciple of Second Soka Gakkai President Toda, Mr. Ikeda succeeded him in 1960 as Soka Gakkai President. He became SGI President in 1975. Founder of Soka University and the Soka School System, Mr. Ikeda is the author of numerous books and has held dialogues toward peace, education and culture with numerous scholars and world leaders. Nichiren Daishonin ( ; "Nichiren" is the name he chose for himself when embarking on spreading his teaching on April 28 . It means "Sun Lotus." The word "Daishonin" is an honorific meaning "great sage."), was a Japanese Buddhist sage who determined that the

Tools About Nichiren Buddhism Nichiren Buddhism is one of the foremost schools of Buddhist thought in the world today. It centers on one of the last teachings of the historic Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama or Shakyamuni. This teaching, called the Lotus Sutra, decares that all living beings, regardless of gender or intelligence, have the potential to attain "Buddhahood," a state of life characterized by compassion, courage, wisdom, joy and life force. Nichiren (1222–1282) taught an easily accessible daily practice through which people can draw forth their powerful inherent Buddha nature. He taught that all of the benefits of the wisdom contained in the Lotus Sutra can be realized by chanting its title, (Nam)-myoho-renge-kyo. Chanting these words, along with excerpts from the Lotus Sutra, is the core of the Buddhist practice, supported by study and propagation of the teachings. These practices not only positively transform people's daily lives, allowing them to find happiness and fulfillment from within, but also affect their surroundings as well, since all life is intimately connected. Thus people can use Nichiren Buddhism in an everyday, practical way, to both deal with the realities of their busy daily lives and also to actively engage with others and ultimately contribute to the betterment of society and the world at large.

It is a UN Non-Governmental Organisation with links to various educational, social, cultural and peace groups. It makes regular (if rather small) tax-deductable donations to worthy causes - details of which are loudly trumpeted in immodest press releases. All in all, the image Soka Gakkai are trying to cultivate is that of a philanthropic peace group, related to Buddhism. One can easily see how anyone could get such an impression, however, if they bother to dig a little deeper a very different picture emerges. Soka Gakkai is, in fact an eastern cult group one of the many "new religions" that sprung up after the end of WW2. It is very clever, very subtle, it has excellent PR, but it is none-the-less, at heart, quite similar to the Unification Church and Scientology- but much worse! THE DARK SIDE OF SOKA GAKKAI INTERNATIONAL The reality of Soka Gakkai is often obscured because of many of the rank and file members seem to lead normal family lives. Sure they give money at regular fund-raising drives - this allows the leaders of the Gakkai to have spectacularly large wage packets - but the pressure to donate is cleverly done - the reasoning given is usually along the lines of "You can change your money karma by giving" or "you are actually giving to yourself". A recent BBC documentary on the Gakkai revealed the huge pressure that Soka Gakkai members are under to contribute towards the Gakkai's billion dollar turnover, as well as many facts about the eastern cult.

Like many sociologists, I have something of a love-hate relationship with survey research. On the one hand, it can provide hard empirical data that are virtually unattainable by other means. But unless it is backed up with more direct qualitative research, survey methodology often leaves the investigator standing on the outside unable to plumb the real depths and complexity of our social life. Hammond and Machacek's new book, Soka Gakkai in America , is an excellent example of how valuable good survey research can be, as well as of its inherent limitations. The most essential practice of Sooka Gakkai Buddhism is chanting centered around veneration of the Lotus Suutra There is little doubt that the demands of the global market are transforming the way we live and the way we think, but it is essential to the future of social science that we maintain a critical distance from these developments. The incredible richness of human behavior cannot be reduced to the mechanical operations of the marketplace. After all, the roots of Buddhism stretch back more than two millennia before the origins of contemporary capitalism to a time when market exchange was of far less importance. Any analysis that reduces religion simply to one more capitalist exchange ignores our deepest spiritual impulses and impoverishes its subject matter.
