Soka Gakkai International - USA
I. Profile Report
  • Name: Soka Gakkai International is the official name of the lay organization of the Nichiren Shoshu Buddhist religion.
  • Founder: Nikko Shonin started the religion in Japan. Tsunesaburo Makiguchi and Josei Toda began the lay group Soka Gakkai, and Masayasu Sadanaga (who changed his name to George M. Williams) began the group in the United States.
  • Date of Births: Not found
  • Years Founded: Shonin founded the group sometime after 1290 by erecting a temple at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The group was relatively small until Makiguchi and Toda formed Soka-kyoiku-gakkai (Value-creating, Education Society) in 1930. Sadanaga brought the religion to the United States (Washington D.C.) in 1957.
  • Brief History: Nichiren Daishonin (the Great Holy One) (1222-1282) was a Buddhist reformer who believed that a greater Buddha than Sakyamuni would redeem earth. When he died, some of his followers were chosen to protect and upkeep his tomb. After a dispute over the responsibility, Nikko Shonin left the group and established a temple, Taiseki-ji, at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The religion lived, in small numbers, until Makiguchi, at odds with the Japanese government (who held as a state religion, Shintoism), established the Soka Gakkai. He was arrested for his beliefs and died in jail. Toda became president of the group and rallied 300,000 peasants at Makiguchi's funeral. The religion rapidly developed a large lay membership. The group grew in Japan under the leadership of Toda.

Since 1991 the SGI has gone through dramatic changes as it has become an engaged lay Buddhist community in society. In response to increasing interest and demand for classroom teaching material, this Resource Guide was designed to present a current look at the changes and events shaping the development of the SGI in the United States. Over the last two years, the Resource Guide has proven a useful classroom tool in introductory courses on Buddhism, Asian Religions, World Religions, Japanese Religions, and Contemporary Religious Movements in America. This web presentation is an effort to make the Resource Guide more widely and easily accessible. Many thanks to the SGI-USA Academic Affairs Department for their concerted time and energy in developing the Resource Guide.

By fostering cooperation and providing spiritual support, Soka Gakkai International intends to bring the bodhisattva way of life to the contemporary world. Its Indian chapter is also growing quietly
Nichiren Daishonin The Buddhist approach to inner tranquillity, according to Nichiren Daishonin, the 13th century Japanese Buddhist monk whose thoughts form the base of the Soka Gakkai movement, begins by the fundamental act of surmounting deluded impulses or inner poisons. Then, through spiritual practice, the energy inherent in these impulses is transformed into an illuminating 'flame' of enlightened wisdom. In the resulting tranquil state, the light of enlightened wisdom shines brilliantly, unblocked and unhindered by the clouds of deluded impulses.
Deeply perturbed by the constant suffering all around despite the all-pervasive influence of Buddhism, Daishonin sought an answer in a thorough study of the various Buddhist sutras and treatises of renowned scholars. His studies brought him to the conclusion that the Lotus Sutra was the highest of Buddhist teachings and the misery of humankind emanated out of our disregard for this teaching.

    A Time For Deeper Faith
The United States' led war against the nation of Iraq is now upon us. Therefore, I believe I need to deepen my faith that my prayers for peace will work. It's hard to have faith when news reports and other people seem to say that war must be. But I must overcome my doubts about the power of my life and strengthen my prayer for peace.

Lawmakers feud on Buddhist ties Coalition members mixed over Soka Gakkai
    Asahi Evening News/June 8, 2000
By Koichi Iitake An emergency message dated June 4 appeared on a bulletin board at Soka Gakkai's facility in Joetsu, Niigata Prefecture. The message was from Soka Gakkai President Einosuke Akiya, who urged members to "determinedly deal a crushing blow" to enemies of the nation's largest lay Buddhist group and its de facto political arm, New Komeito. "Such determination to fight it out stems from a teaching in our religion that allows us believers to resort to even 'swords' for the purpose of protecting the teachings of Buddhism," said a local member of Soka Gakkai, on condition of anonymity. The ultimate goal of Soka Gakkai and New Komeito in Niigata's No. 6 single-seat district race in the June 25 Lower House election, which covers Joetsu, is "to oust incumbent Katsuhiko Shirakawa of the Liberal Democratic Party from national politics," he said. Shirakawa, a former home affairs minister, is one of several LDP politicians who have openly insisted that it is against the constitutional principle of "separating politics from religion" for Soka Gakkai to have created a political party. He has also opposed the current ruling coalition of the LDP, New Komeito and Hoshuto (New Conservative Party).
