In his dialogue with Ikeda, who is the third president of Soka Gakkai, an international Buddhist movement that promotes education, world-wide cultural exchange and the establishment of world peace, the Malaysian premier stated that leaders are always confronted with tough problems and difficult solutions, which should be tackled head on, as by running away from the tasks at hand would equal defeat in one’s personal growth. “There is no ocean without waves,” said Dr Mahathir. “Only by overcoming hardship can leaders shine with even greater brilliance.” He said all great leaders should actively seek out and take on challenges.

A Time to Chant is an excellently-written, dispassionate sociological account of Soka Gakkai Buddhism in the United Kingdom. Everyone who reads JBE has heard of Soka Gakkai, and several million people-mainly in Japan but also in many other countries of the world-belong to the movement and regularly practice individual or group daimoku (chanting of the title of the "namu-myoho-renge-kyo") and gongyo (recitation of sections of the The overwhelming majority of members of SGI-UK are in no doubt that the practice of Buddhism delivers the results that it claims, and mostly here and now. According to Wilson and Dobbelaere "of the 96 per cent who chant for particular goals, only 3 per cent said that those goals had not been realized" (195). The goals SGI Buddhists aim at are immensely varied, ranging from acquisition of specific sums of money to compassion towards others and the spread of Buddhism world wide. Soka Gakkai appears able to encompass all of these disparate aims, to foster in its members a spirit of independence and enterprise and, despite the apparently highly individualistic nature of the basic chanting practice, to mobilize the majority of members into collective activities promoting personal, social, cultural, environmental, and spiritual uplift on a global scale.

Their Chants for Change
By Clark Morphew, Staff Writer Soka Gakkai Buddhism has spread worldwide since World War II. Though prayer meetings take place monthly in St. Paul, adherents chant daily for among other things peace and nonviolent social change. ``A great revolution in just a single individual will help achieve a change in the destiny of a society and further, will enable a change in the destiny of humankind.'' "The Human Revolution,'' a history [sic] of Soka Gakkai International They worship in a quiet neighborhood in St. Paul inside a white concrete building, but their Buddhist origins emerged from the violence and ruins of World War II. The religion is Soka Gakkai International. It is one of perhaps 1,000 branches of Buddhism. Since World War II, it has steadily grown in membership in 128 countries. The local Soka Gakkai community has about 450 members across the Twin Cities. They worship together once a month in a building on Eustis Street on the western edge of St. Paul. Only the letters SGI identify the building as a place of worship. But inside on the first Sunday of each month, about 50 people gather to chant and contemplate life. The Twin Cities' Soka Gakkai leader is Howard Dunlavy, a native Minnesotan who discovered the religion at a critical juncture in his life.

It's really great to get together and chant, but when they start hounding you to do it, it's a bit much. They spend as much as three hours a day chanting. I'd rather spend the time playing music." Touching her fingers to the sides of her forehead, Veronika states "They only see the world through the perspective of 'Nam-myo-ho-renge-kyo'. I read the World Tribune. Half of it is crap! It's like these good Christian beliefs that I grew up on, and I just don't need that in my adult life...Buddhism, not chanting, is a way of life; Buddhism takes years. It's pretentious to call yourself a Buddhist just because you chant. So what does all this mean? The abilities of chanting as a valid form of spiritual development is not the issue here; all of the Nichiren sects chant as do members of the Pure Land, and chanting predates recorded history. At question is the belief that worship of a relic, allegedly entrusted with magical powers, can bring material gain. At issue here is the question of whether one allies oneself with an organization which stresses that only its beliefs and its beliefs alone are correctan organization which subjugates the individual's development of an independent, well informed political and social conscience and substitutes the organizational point of viewor if one should strive for spiritual development on one's own, placing morality above materialism. It is a question that each of the organization's followers would do well to search their own hearts for an answer to.

What is the Soka Gakkai International?
The Soka Gakkai International (SGI) is an international association of more than 12 million members in Soka Gakkai constituent organizations in more than 180 countries and territories around the world. The SGI is administered by a board of directors and a committee of standing directors, and it commissions the Soka Gakkai of Japan to carry out its secretarial functions. The organization was founded in 1975. Daisaku Ikeda is the current SGI president. The first Soka Gakkai president was Tsnesaburo Makiguchi and the second Soka Gakkai president was Josei Toda The SGI aims to realize the absolute happiness (enlightenment) of individuals and the prosperity of each country by spreading understanding of the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin (1222-1282). Toward that end, the SGI engages in various activities to promote peace, culture and education based on Buddhism. Nichiren Buddhism , on which the activities of the SGI are based, places special emphasis on the sanctity of human life and, as a natural outgrowth of this, on peace. Lasting peace can only be realized by challenging and overcoming the inner impulse toward hatred and violence that exists within all people. Buddhism terms this inner impulse the "fundamental darkness of life." It is the dynamic process of self-reformation through the practice of Buddhism, that results in the rejuvenation of the individual and society, and forms the core of SGI's vision for a peaceful world.

    INTRODUCTION
This pamphlet attempts to outline some key elements of what has become known in the Soka Gakkai International (SGI) as the "temple issue" events and information related to Nichiren Shoshu's attacks on the SGI, and its continued efforts to undermine SGI's movement. When the priesthood of Nichiren Shoshu began a series of measures against the SGI at the beginning of this decade intended to disband and destroy the organization, it may have been shocking and disturbing, but it was not surprising from the standpoint of Nichiren Daishonin's teachings and of history. Many incidents and events going back to the Soka Gakkai's inception before World War II indicated that within the Nichiren Shoshu priesthood there existed the potential for hatred and jealousy toward lay believers. It was evident in the attitude and behavior of more than a few priests. As the Gakkai's growth and influence increased, so did the number of priests who harbored such an attitude until, eventually, it reached the office of high priest.

Most people in the world today who practice the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin are members of an organisation called SGI (Soka Gakkai International).  Soka Gakkai literally means Value Creation, therefore it the Buddhist Society for the Creation of Value.
All SGI activities are based on the teachings and the individual practice of the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin.  This 13th Century Japanese sage centred his philosophy on what is traditionally thought to be one of the last recorded teachings of the first historically recorded Buddha (variously known as Guatama Siddhartha or Shakyamuni Buddha) which was named the Lotus Sutra.  The Lotus Sutra declares that all living beings regardless of gender or intellectual capacity, can attain the enlightened state of life within their given lifetime.
In common with other Buddhist teachings, individual enlightenment is grasped through the profound realisation of the inseparability of the individual and their spiritual and physical environment and their ability to powerfully influence both.

On September 7, 1993, adopting a proposal from Sendo Narita, the chief priest of Joen-ji, a temple in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, the SGI announced that it would start issuing Gohonzon, reproduced from a Gohonzon transcribed in 1720 by Nichikan, the 26 th high priest of Taiseki-ji, to its members worldwide. Many SGI members who practiced without the Gohonzon since Nichiren Shoshu’s refusal to grant them the Gohonzon were overjoyed at the news. And many others, filled with hope, have been looking forward to a bright future of the spread of Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism ad a flourishing of the Soka Renaissance toward a world that embraces truly humanistic ideals.
