Its first general assembly had actually been held two months before this date. s all historians who have studied this field agree, the Bascongada served as an example in the creation of numerous economic societies throughout the territories ruled by the Spanish Crown.

CHAPTER 6
The Twentieth Century (So Far!)
Twentieth century Quakerism really began with the Manchester Conference of 1895. As has been said, this was followed by important Summer Schools at Scarborough and elsewhere and then came the foundation of Woodbrooke College in 1903. The motivation for all this came from a number of forward looking Friends who, to put it bluntly, felt that when Friends spoke in Meeting for Worship or elsewhere about Quakerism, the Bible, etc., they had better know what they were talking about. There was no merit in ignorance as such; and a good contribution to overcoming ignorance was to provide a study centre. This would be open to any Friends able to take advantage of it, who in their turn would be able to disseminate their knowledge among their local Meetings. Thus, Woodbrooke College came to be founded. It was situated in a large house on the outskirts of Birmingham, which was donated by George and Elizabeth Cadbury. The house is set in a large garden, which still today provides an oasis of quiet on the edge of the city.
Woodbrooke College
This is not the place for a detailed account of Woodbrooke, but the work done there sufficiently reflects the work and action of twentieth century Friends that it is worth giving some outline.

The Birthday Biff Golf Society was formed in the UK in 1993. It is a vehicle for celebrating a group of friends' birthdays by having a pleasant round of golf and then getting totally nailed in a bar somewhere.
From the humble beginnings of playing golf then dossing down on Smudger's floor and robbing his drink, the society has graduated to staying in upmarket hotels and robbing their drink. Membership of the Society is restricted to those players who have been invited to, and survived three biffs. It's not the golf but the drinking and the piss taking that's the problem for most people. It is peculiar among golf societies as there aren't actually any rules, but anyone breaking them never gets asked back. 137. Index2
Extracts from humorous records of walks by a group of friends 20 years ago.
http://www.cyberware.co.uk/~ddm221/K9-01.htm
The Journal of the Canine Universal Nature Training Society Many years ago some neighbours who had become my good friends persuaded me to give up 'doing things around the house' and go walking with them on Sunday mornings. One of them, 'J', wrote a weekly article about beer for a local newspaper, and often used the walks as a source of material. He adopted the style of Jerome K. Jerome in his famous book, 'Three Men in a Boat', and to preserve the anonymity of the walkers, he gave us pseudonyms, starting with 'George' and 'Harris'. He also coined the Society's name, on the basis that we used 'walking the dog' as an excuse to be at the pub door at opening time (then 12 noon). All the members had very demanding professions, so Sunday mornings became a wonderful time to 'let off steam', and our behaviour was the antithesis of our workaday responsibilities. Eventually I realised that I was having 'the Time of my Life' on our excursions, and so I began to record them afterwards in the pub, for I thought, "One day something will change, and things will never be the same again." As we walked along the sea wall our shadows walked with us; once we had noticed them they started to do exotic things.

Animals Requesting Friends Benevolent Society
Our Pet List
Our Featured Pet... Tiger is a 4-5 yr old collie mix. He is a very sweet and loving dog that desperately needs a home. He was put in a local humane society as a puppy. He was then adopted, only to be put in a pen outside. He has lived there ever since he was adopted with little attention given to him at all. He is a very friendly dog that is starving for attention. He gets along well with other dogs, however he dislikes cats. Tiger needs a warm, loving, permanent home.
News
We are very excited about becoming a part of petfinder.org. Our Referral Service is a new project for our organization. Unfortunatley, we lack the funds, foster homes, or facility to foster/house any animals at this time. Therefore the animals must stay in their present location until the time of adoption. This makes it very important to find homes for our loving pets. We hope to increase our adoptions by putting our pets online.
Who We Are
Animals Requesting Friends is an all volunteer, not-for-profit, publicly supported, non-facility Humane Society founded to prevent the over breeding of cats and dogs by providing educational materials, programs, and financial assistance to pet owners for the purpose of spaying and neutering their pets in order to prevent the birth of unwanted animals and their eventual suffering.
