The countries of the Slavic world have played a prominent role in international life, and have produced numerous writers, musicians, philosophers, and scientists of note. In Canada, vast immigration from Slavic cultures over the last century has contributed greatly to our cultural mosaic. In our department you can study the cultures of this fascinating region. The teaching of Slavic languages and literatures at the University of Toronto began in 1947. Our department offers one of the broadest ranges of Slavic languages and literatures in North America, with courses in Croatian Czech Macedonian Polish ... Serbian and Ukrainian . It is also home to Finno-Ugric studies ( Estonian Finnish and Hungarian ). Many of our literature and culture courses are taught in English and do not require special linguistic preparation.

    SEEFA
Slavic and East European Folklore Association
SEEFA is a non-profit organization devoted to an exchange of knowledge among scholars interested in Slavic and East European folklore. It seeks to promote instruction, to organize panels at national and international conferences, to encourage the preparation of teaching materials and translations, and to foster exchanges, summer programs, and research in Slavic and East European Folklore and related fields such as anthropology, ethnic studies, history, literature, and musicology. SEEFA publishes a journal twice a year. With the Spring 2003 issue the name of the journal has been changed to:
FOLKLORICA: Journal of the Slavic and East European Folklore Association.
The name-change was prompted by the desire to reflect the fact that the journal is an international publishing outlet, not solely an association journal. Unlike most learned societies, SEEFA places its complete journal on the web with free access to all. The Executive Committee of SEEFA feels that folklorists in Slavic and East European countries should have access to FOLKLORICA, irrespective of their ability to join SEEFA. In fact, as of Spring 2003 over one-third of the visits to this web site came from Eastern Europe. However, in order for this access to be maintained, we would like to encourage folklorists who are in a position to join SEEFA, please to do so.

One of the founders of the "Geneva Group for the Federation of Labour." Together with the St. Petersburg-based "Union for Struggle of the Liberation of the Working Class," this was the foundation of the Russian Social Democratic Workers Party (RSDRP). In 1903 the latter split into the split into the Bolshevik and Menshevik factions, with Axelrod becoming a major figure in the latter. Over the next 25 years, he was the outstanding ideologist, though not the most influential political leader of Menshevism.
