Sikhism u m] Pronunciation Key Sikhism , religion centered in the Indian state of Punjab, numbering worldwide some 19 million. Some 300,000 Sikhs live in Britain, and there are smaller communities in North America, Australia, and Singapore. By the late 1990s Sikhism was the world's fifth largest faith and had some 175,000 U.S. adherents and 225,000 in Canada. Sikhism is heterodox, combining the teachings of Bhakti Hinduism and Islamic Sufism. The founder and first Sikh guru caste udasis ) from the laity, eliminated most features of Hinduism, and introduced the Gurmukhi script. Under the fourth guru, Ram Das, Amritsar was founded as a sacred city. Arjun, the fifth guru, compiled devotional poetry by earlier Sikh gurus and other prominent saints into the Sikh scripture, the Adigranth, which remains central to Sikh religious life. Under succeeding gurus the Sikh community gradually united and began to develop military power; the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb responded by executing the ninth guru and ordering the destruction of Sikh temples.

Sikhism
A progressive religion well ahead of its time when it was founded over 500 years ago, The Sikh religion today has a following of over 20 million people worldwide and is ranked as the worlds 5th largest religion. Sikhism preaches a message of devotion and remembrance of God at all times, truthful living, equality of mankind and denounces superstitions and blind rituals. Sikhism is open to all through the teachings of its 10 Gurus enshrined in the Sikh Holy Book and Living Guru, Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
The Golden Temple at Amritsar, the holiest shrine of the Sikhs.
It was built in 1764. (Punjab, India)
Amritsar, the original name of first the ancient lake, then the temple complex, and still later the surrounding city, means "pool of ambrosial nectar." Looking deeply into the origins of this word amrit, we find that it indicates a drink of the gods, a rare and magical substance that catalyzes euphoric states of consciousness and spiritual enlightenment. With this word we have a very clear example of the spirit, power, or energetic character of a particular place becoming encoded as an ancient geographical place name. The myth is not just a fairy tale. It reveals itself as a coded metaphor if we have the knowledge to read the code: The waters of Amritsar flowing into the lake of the Hari Mandir were long ago - and remain today - a bringer of peacefulness.

more ads Sikhism Potpourri Introduction The history and suffering of Sikhs is one of the most important episodes in the history of India. Guru Nanak Dev founded Sikhism in the fifteen century and he was followed by nine Gurus (divine teachers or prophets). Guru Angad developed the Gurumukhi script. Guru Ram Das laid the foundation for the city of Amritsar. Guru Arjun Dev compiled the Adi Grinth, the sacred text of Sikhs. But it was Guru Gobind Singh who gave Sikhism a renewed vigor and mass following in the seventeenth century. The principle of Sikhism was that there was but one God, and all men who were servants of God and Guru, and were bound together in a holy brotherhood known as the Khalsa. Guru Gobind Singh also built the institution of Akalis. The Akalis were fiercely religious devotees soldiers of God. Late in the twentieth century (1970s and 1980s), the Akalis were to wage a bloody fight against the Indian Government that led to massive armed offensive against them. Today, people of Sikh religion can be found all over the world, due to years of persecution in their homeland (in 1738 by Nadir Shah, in 1748 to 1751 by Ahmed Shah Abdadi, by British in 1849, and in 1984 by Government militia) as well as due to their entrepreneur spirit. The Sikhs (or Sardarjis as they are popularly known) have been great patrons of art, religion and scholarship. Along with Rajputs, they are the known as the bravest people in India, and their women, among India's most beautiful. The Sikhs have participated in India's nation building for hundreds of years, fighting the British, serving in the military (the Sikh regiment is the most decorated regiment of the Indian army) and excelling in sports, and one even served as the President of India (Gianni Zail Singh). The Sikhs are a light-hearted, humorous (and hence targets of Sardarji jokes?), and religious people who love music and dance.

WHAT DOES sikhism STAND FOR? sikhism is free from any claims and dogmas. To attainsalvation, sikhism rejects all rites, rituals, and fasts. TENETS OF sikhism.
http://www.ikonkar.com/sikhism/sikhism.htm
Sikhism is the religion of the Sikhs. Sikhism is not a blend or reproduction of earlier religions but a New Revelation altogether. In its simplest form, Sikhism represents a spiritual path to God and a just social order for all. The religion was founded in India by Guru Nanak in the form of ten Gurus (1469-1708). The tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh proclaimed the eleventh and last Guru as the Guru Granth Sahib, which is the revered Holy scriptures of the Sikhs. The teachings that the Gurus gave to this world came to them directly from God. THE SIKH GREETING Whenever a Sikh meets another Sikh, they greet each other with folded hands saying: “Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh” The Khalsa (Sikh) belongs to the Glorious Master (God), all triumph to His Name. WHO IS A SIKH? A sikh is a person who believes in one God and the teachings of all the ten Gurus and Sri Guru Granth Sahib alike. He believes in the Amrit prepared by Guru Gobind Singh Ji (the tenth Guru). A Sikh who has taken Gods amrit must wear five articles of faith all the time. Each one begins with the letter “K” and are thus called the 5 Ks. These are:

, barely over 500 years old. It was founded by Siri Guru Nanak Dev J i in 1469 who laid the basic principles of Sikhism It offered the people a simple Sikh religion teaching "Oneness of God", whose name is TRUTH Nine Gurus followed him who all reinforced and added to what was taught by the first Guru. After which in 1708, the holy book of the Sikhs, The Siri GURU GRANTH SAHIB JI was Proclaimed to be the only Guru by the last Guru, Siri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Ek Onkar EK Onkar The most significant word used in the Sikh teachings. EK Onkar are the first two words of Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and also Mool Mantar.
Literally, Ek means 'ONE' emphasizing the oneness of God, which is the basics of Sikhism. Onkar means The Onkar is derived from the Sanskrit word Om which consists of three syllable sounds representing the trinty of Bramha, Vishnu and Shiva. Onkar therefore means GOD in His entirety.

The name Hinduism means the civilization of the Hindus (originally, the inhabitants of the land of the Indus River). Introduced c. 1830 by English writers, the term properly denotes the Indian civilization of approximately the last 2,000 years, which gradually evolved from Vedism, the religion of the ancient Indo-European peoples who settled in India in the last centuries of the 2nd millenium B.C.E. Because it integrates a large variety of heterogenous elements, Hinduism constitutes a very complex but largely continuous whole, and since it covers the whole of life, it has religious, social, economic, literary, and artistic aspects. As a religion, Hinduism is a diverse conglomerate of doctrines, cults, and ways of life. The diversity of Hinduism makes compiling a list of Internet resources related to Hinduism problematic. Many of the World Wide Web links are personal and highly artistic, which makes it sometimes difficult to find scholarly material valuable to the Religious Studies student. Listed below are what we consider the best available Internet resources on Hinduism.

Guru Nanak and the Founding The founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, was born into a Hindu family. He followed this lifestyle for many years and had established his own family when he decided to leave in search of a Truth that he did not believe was to be found in his present life situation. Nanak traveled for several years, learning and seeking this Truth or Reality.
