Japanese Shintoism. The Yengishiki is a compilation of Shinto rituals. It was copied down around AD 927, but is certainly much older than that, possibly thousands of years older. The selections here are: Harvest Ritual. Rituals to the Sun-Goddess. The Purification Ritual.
Shinto means the "Way of the Gods." Shintoism is a sort of ancestor-worship, which both seeks the favor of the good spirits from the past and dreads the attacks of evil spirits. The chief single shrine in Japan today is that of the Sun-goddess at Ise, who is revered as the great ancestress of all the Mikados and, in some sense, of all the Japanese. There are also strong aspects of animism and nature worship, and much of the rituals are designed to connect people to the seasons and changing rhythms of nature.
The early rituals recited by the Shinto priests, some of them doubtless of an antiquity far exceeding the Kojiki, are preserved to us by the Yengishiki. This is a book in which the rituals were copied down a thousand years ago (AD 927). Yet these chants have in the Yengishiki the same form in which they are often repeated today. In other words, Shintoism does not change; it clings to the recital of old formulas. So that these Shinto rituals of the Yengishiki may well vie in age with the barbaric chants incorporated in the Kohiki and Nihongi and attributed to the very earliest Mikados.

The Revival of Shintoism
According to traditional Shinto religion, which is foundational to Japanese culture and nationhood, the first emperor was the grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu After Japan lost World War II, the American occupying forces required the emperor to renounce his claim to divinity. Also at American insistence, a modern constitution was adopted that grounded political power in the people, allowed the emperor only a symbolic role, and guaranteed religious liberty and freedom of conscience to all citizens. But the conservative forces in Japan have never accepted this, and have looked for ways to revive the old nationalism, centering around the emperor. Remembering the catastrophe of World War II, many other Japanese do not want to see any revival of nationalism or state Shintoism. To encourage a more patriotic spirit in Japan, the Ministry of Education began requiring schools to honor the Japanese flag and sing a national anthem (neither of which had legal status). However, the traditional flag bears the image of the sun. The Sun Flag, or Hinomaru , has historically been a symbol of the reign of the (divine) emperor. Furthermore, the anthem, called the

- With general viewpoints concerning natural religions -. Our additional pages concerning the other Religions are a contribution to the inter-religious dialogue. On the part of Christianity, the basis is independent research, including the old spiritual depth and modern investigations of consciousness. The old Japanese Shinto Religion (Kami no michi) is not described comprehensively, but some viewpoints are given which are important for this purpose. Shinto is originally one of the Natural Religions, which are related to one another all around the world and which are older than the well known World Religions like Buddhism and Christianity. Natural Religions.
The origin of the Natural Religions is a time when human beings mainly had a consciousness different from the intellect dominating today. Jean Gebser, author of the book "Ursprung und Gegenwart" (German) would name this level of awareness the "mythical consciousness".
