The Unique Potential of Shin Buddhism in Western Society
Alfred Bloom Professor Emeritus University of Hawaii
Time does not permit me to go into detail on my life experience that led me to Buddhism and to Shin Buddhism. However, suffice it to say that I began as a fundamentalist Baptist and through a series of experiences finally arrived home in Shin Buddhism. It is against this background that I would present the unique potential of Shin Buddhism in American society, as an alternative path for those seeking a more realistic understanding of the self and a more personally satisfying approach to life. I can only enumerate a few points which I believe have significance for the propagation of Shin Buddhism in American society. In the first place, Shin Buddhism is a layperson’s religion. It was directed by Shinran to lay people, farmers, merchants, hunters, townspeople who could not leave their social obligation to enter monastic orders or attain the exalted spiritual experiences achieved by eminent monks. Shinran challenged the elitist religion of his day by offering a way which involved a depth of spiritual experience within the context of ordinary life. His understanding of the path of deliverance begins with the recognition of one’s ineradicable, passion-ridden nature, defiled by all kinds of evils, as the basis of conflict and violence.

The teaching of Joodoshinshuu (or Shin Buddhism) in the American undergraduate curriculum has been hampered from the outset by a lack of variety in available teaching materials. One can readily find materials by and about Shinran Shoonin (1173-1263), the founder of the school, and increasingly one may obtain materials by and about Rennyo (1415-1499), the "second founder." Anything beyond that has been exceeding rare and generally not useful or convenient for classroom use. Esben Andreasen, a Danish high school teacher who has long studied Japanese Buddhism and collaborated on projects with Ian Reader, has corrected this deficiency with a remarkable compilation of source materials on Shin Buddhism designed expressly to expose students to a wide variety of texts from the Shin tradition.

Shin Buddhist Studies (Master's and Doctoral Programs)
The aim of the program in Shin Buddhist Studies is to reflect upon the structure and meaning of human existence through academic study of the fundamental scriptures and authoritative texts of Shin Buddhism. The Shin tradition emphasizes the necessity of "listening to the Dharma" in the quest for one's authentic existence. It is with such an attitude that students approach Shin Buddhist Studies. This approach, however, does not mean a suspension of critical judgment, but indeed requires the fullest use of one's intellectual faculties. The program is centered on a careful study of Shinran's Kyogyosbinsho , the fundamental outline of Shin Buddhist faith, the Threefold Pure Land Sutras - Sutra of Eternal Life, Meditation Sutra and Amida Sutra and works of the patriarchs of Shin Buddhism, among them T'an-luan's Ching-t'e Lun-cbu and Shantao's Kuan-wu-liang-shou-ching-shu To assure basic understanding of the fundamental concepts of Shin Buddhism as well as Buddhism in general, students who have not taken the following courses during their undergraduate years are required to take them without credit: Introduction to Shin Buddhist Studies; Readings in Kyogyoshinsho ; one other course in Shin Buddhist Studies; Introduction to Buddhist Studies; and one other course in Buddhist Studies.

The Shin Buddhist Comprehensive Research Institute
[Japanese Page] The Shin Buddhist Comprehensive Research Institute, established in 1981, is located on Teramachi Street, just a few minutes walk from the main campus. Here individuals and groups concentrate on research projects in their respective fields. The Institute accommodates both short and long-term projects in various academic fields, with the larger purpose of integrating these areas within the ideals articulated by Shin Buddhism. The five long-term projects currently supported by the Institute are:
Project for Compiling a History of Otani University:
The aim of this project is to compile a history of Otani University, tracing the development of our school from its beginning in the Edo period over three hundred years ago.
Project for International Buddhist Studies:
The aim of this project is to promote the exchange of ideas between Buddhist scholars of Otani University and those of non-Japanese institutions and to consider ways in which academic cooperation can be carried out most effectively.
Project for Research of Shin Buddhist Historical Documents:
The aim of this project is to study, catalogue and publish historical documents concerning Higashi Honganji from the early modern and modern periods.

Naturalness: A Classic of Shin Buddhism > Customer Review #1: Short book, long read

Kanamatsus work here isnt that big a volume, to be sure. But to just skim it would be wrong, since the depth of thought that this slim volume can provoke is very great. In a sense, this is an introductory text to Jodo Shinshu, the True Pure Land School of Mahayana Buddhism. But at the same time, the author focusses this introduction through the critical Shin concept of naturalness. As such, this is no easy concept to digest on a rational, Western level, especially for beginners who might encounter this book. But somehow, Kanamatsu actually manages to pull off an exegesis of this central precept in such a way that it IS accessible...provided one reads carefully and thoughtfully, as such a topic requires. Approached in mindfulness, this is one of those little books that has the potential to be a life-changer! I wouldnt say that this is the best place to start in ones readings in Shin Buddhism...I would peg that as either Dr. Tanakas "Ocean" or Dr. Unnos "River of Fire..."...but this is definitely one of the ones to pick up after the very first intro works.

Shin Buddhism : Bits of Rubble Turn into Gold > Customer Review #1: An excellent follow-up to "River of Fire..."

Rev. Unnos book "Shin Buddhism: Bits of Rubble Turn Into Gold" is essentially a follow-up work to his wonderful introductory text "River of Fire, River of Water". But while that work provided an overview of Shin Buddhism in of itself, this work provides a broader view of how Shin Buddhism affects the lives of those who practice it, as well as exploring the deeper issues of the Nembutsu-faith. Rev. Unno here shows us how this faith affects those who accept it, and why. Just as "River of Fire..." explained the what of Jodo Shinshu, "Bits of Rubble..." explains the how in like manner...which is clear, concise, and readily-understandable. As a text for both beginners/explorers and those steeped in the faith, it succeeds at delivering meaningful messages and points on which to ponder. I would suggest reading "River of Fire, River of Water" before this, as there seems to be something of a continuity from that books information and manner of imparting it into this ones. But do read this one after that to gain valuable insight into what Shin brings into peoples lives. Like that prior book, I recommend this one without hesitation.

Shin
Shin Buddhism originated in Japan and is a Pureland sect of Buddhism. Many of the Pureland sects believe that it is next to impossible to reach enlightenment in this world, but that if one may be reborn in the Pureland where there are no distractions on the path to enlightenment. The Pureland is the land of Amida Buddha, Buddha of wisdom and compassion. Amida Buddha is not an historical buddha. Shinran (1173-1262) founded Shin Buddhism. Shinran was trained as a monk in the Tendai sect and also studied under Honen. He lived at a time of turmoil in Japan when many Buddhist reformers were persecuted and exiled. Shinran broke with the tradition of Buddhist leaders having a monastic life - he married and had children. He thus set the precedence for non-monastic lay practice in Shin, though Shinran considered himself to be neither monk nor lay. Shinran taught that one can be reborn in the Pureland by uttering "Namu Amida Butsu" with a true heart. "Namu Amida Butsu" is called nembutsu and is an invocation of the name of Amida Buddha. Shinran was not the first to teach nembutsu, but he put primary emphasis on nembutsu making it the primary practice of Shin Buddhism. Shinran also taught that Nembutsu is a manifestation of Shinjin - a state free of the world's dichotomy. He believed that one should not chant nembutsu simply to gain enlightenment for oneself. Many Shin Buddhist have a small altar called an O-Butsudan in their homes. This usually has an image of Amida Buddha, a scroll with the Chinese characters of Namu Amida Butsu. Often offerings of food are placed on this altar and incense is burned. Shin Buddhists also celebrate O-bon in the summer. This is a celebration of commemorating one's ancestors. During religious services, Shin Buddhist wear a bracelet of prayer beads called O-jizu which are similar to mala beads.

‘Shin Buddhism’
