Through the years Seventh-day Adventists have been reluctant to formalize a creed (in the usual sense of that word). However from time to time, for practical purposes, we have found it necessary to summarize our beliefs. This summary dates from 1980, and is taken from the book "Seventh-day Adventists Believe", Review + Herald Publishing Assn., c 1988.
Seventh-day Adventists Believe
The Holy Scriptures, Old and New Testaments, are the written Word of God, given by divine inspiration through holy men of God who spoke and wrote as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. In this Word, God has committed to man the knowledge necessary for salvation. The Holy Scriptures are the infallible revelation of His will. They are the standard of character, the test of experience, the authoritative revealer of doctrines, and the trustworthy record of God's acts in history. There is one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, a unity of three co-eternal Persons. God is immortal, all- powerful, all-knowing, above all, and ever present. He is infinite and beyond human comprehension, yet known through His self-revelation. He is forever worthy of worship, adoration, and service by the whole creation. God the eternal Spirit was active with the Father and the Son in Creation, incarnation, and redemption. He inspired the writers of Scripture. He filled Christ's life with power. He draws and convicts human beings; and those who respond He renews and transforms into the image of God. Sent by the Father and the Son to be always with His children, He extends spiritual gifts to the church, empowers it to bear witness to Christ, and in harmony with the Scriptures leads it into all truth.

3. What Adventists Believe

What Adventists Believe As a Christian church, Seventh-day Adventists are a faith community rooted in the beliefs described by the Holy Scriptures As a Christian church, Seventh-day Adventists are a faith community rooted in the beliefs described by the Holy Scriptures. Adventists describe these beliefs in the following ways: God's greatest desire is for you to see a clear picture of His character. When you see Him clearly, you will find His love irresistible. For many, "seeing God clearly" requires that they see God's face. However, how He looks is not the issue. Seeing and understanding His character is what's most important. The more clearly we understand Him, the more we will find His love irresistible. As we begin to experience His love, our own lives will begin to make more sense. God most clearly reveals His character in three great events. The first is His creation of man and womanand His giving them the freedom of choice. He created humans with the ability to choose to love Him or to hate Him! The death of Jesus Christ, God's only Son, on the cross as our substitute is the second great event. In that act He paid the penalty we deserve for our hateful choices toward God and His ways. Jesus' death guarantees forgiveness for those choices and allows us to spend eternity with Him. The third event confirms the first two and fills every heart with hope: Christ's tomb is empty! He is alive, living to fill us with His love!

This is a Response to Graham Maxwell's Great Controversy View The unabridged article recently published in Adventist Today Nov-Dec. 2002 issue. While I certainly thank them for publishing my article I did find it to be edited in such a way that I think it did not carry the impact that it might have had. It was meant to be two 1500 word articles and it was edited into one. Here is the article as I wish it had appeared.

History:
The origin of the Seventh-day Adventists (SDAs) can be traced to the Millerite Movement of the 19th Century. This movement was largely responsible for what has been called the Great second advent awakening . William Miller (1782-1849) was a farmer who settled in upstate New York after the war of 1812. He was originally a Deist (a person who believes that God created the universe but has not been actively involved since). After two years of private Bible study, Miller converted to Christianity and became a Baptist lay leader. He was convinced that the Bible contained coded information about the end of the world and the Second Coming of Jesus . He also realized that he had an obligation to teach his findings to others. In 1831, he started to preach; the next year, he wrote articles about his findings. In 1833, he published a pamphlet on end-time prophecy. In 1836, his book Evidences from Scripture and History of the Second Coming of Christ about the Year 1843 was published.

Background:
The SDA church has always taken a special interest in health concerns: diet, smoking, alcohol consumption, etc. They are strong supporters of the principle of separation of church and state. They also promote religious liberty, and publish a periodical called Liberty The Church has about 5 million members worldwide, with a growth rate of about 7%. They have 825 thousand members and 4,348 churches in the US. They have about 52 thousand members in Canada. Theologically, they are very conservative. One main difference between the SDA church and a typical Evangelical church is that the SDA's hold religious services on the Sabbath (Saturday). The church's stand is that the Bible consistently condemns all homosexuality behavior as a sin. They have stated that gay and lesbian relationships are "obvious perversions of God's original plan." Gay candidates are not permitted to be ordained as pastors.
Some developments:
: SDA Kinship International, a gay-positive organization was founded. It is completely independent of the SDA church and has over 1000 members: gays, lesbians, their parents, friends and supporters. They believe that:
