  • Name: Church of Scientology Scientology means "knowing about knowing," from the Latin word scio and the Greek word logos Founder: Lafayette Ronald (L. Ron) Hubbard Date of Birth/Death: March 13, 1911/January 24, 1986 Birth Place: Tilden, Nebraska Year Founded: Biography of Founder:
  • According to texts published by the Church of Scientology and its web page pertaining primarily to its founder, L. Ron Hubbard, always referred to as L. Ron by Scientologists, experienced early in his life the many facets of the human mind. At the age of 12, he learned from Commander Joseph C. Thompson, who was the first military official to study under Sigmund Freud in Vienna, Austria, the theory of psychoanalysis. Hubbard was also influenced by his many world journeys to exotic locales, thus gaining an appreciation for Eastern philosophies rooted in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism. His studies in mathematics, engineering, and nuclear physics at George Washington University generated a scientific background to his beliefs in the human mind, although his studies did not earn him a degree. As a naval officer during World War II, he suffered injuries that left him blind and crippled. During his recovery, he once again examined Freudian psychoanalytical theory and Eastern philosophies. He credits the eventual cure of his disabilities to his findings about the human mind during this time, findings that became the central elements of a religious doctrine he later called Dianetics.

    Munksgaard, 1997. 84 sider / Gyldendal, 1997.148 sider.

    SCIENTOLOGY (1/4)
The Founder of the Church of Scientology, Lafayette Ronald Hubbard, was born in Tilden, Nebraska, in 1911. He became a famous author known mostly for his pulp science fiction stories, and published over 200 works over the course of his life. In 1938, he deduced the common denominator of existence to be "survive" and outlined his theory that "life is composed of two things: the material universe and an X-factor... that can evidently organize and mobilize the material universe." This fundamental concept formed the basis of both of his philosophies: Dianetics and Scientology. In 1951, Hubbard formed Scientology, which is based on his theory that humans are spiritual beings, as well as his "X-factor." The first Church of Scientology was formed in Los Angeles in 1954 by persons other than Hubbard, and the Founding Church of Scientology was founded in Washington, DC in 1955.

A couple years back, I was riding in a Clearwater cab. I was on my way to a candlelight vigil in memory of a woman who died a tragic death after being held against her will for 17 days in the Fort Harrison Hotel. The cab driver was very curious about Scientology and asked a lot of questions. At one point he asked if there was any connection to Satanism. I gave him a little background about Hubbard and Jack Parsons and their attempts to create the Moonchild. This driver, who had been so interested in Scientology, suddenly said, "Oh c'mon! You're just making this up to make Hubbard look bad." This driver hadn't heard Hubbard in his own voice praising his "good friend, Aleister Crowley." He hadn't seen any documentation or heard Scientology's silly cover story (repeated on the A&E two hour documentary) that Hubbard had been sent in to "break-up" this Satanic cult. The story was just too unbelievable to be true. This unfortunately is one of the main flaws with the movie "The Profit." Although many of the events in the life of the fictional L.

UN asks Germany to explain Scientology stand

Film star John Travolta, who has taken part in the campaign against Germany's policies The United Nations special rapporteur on religion has asked Germany to make clear why it has placed the Church of Scientology under surveillance. The rapporteur rejected allegations by the Scientologists that Germany's attitude towards them is reminiscent of the Nazis. But in a report to the UN Human Rights Commission he warned that the emotional debate about new religious movements may lead to prejudice, and asked Germany to begin a campaign against religious intolerance. The German authorities say surveillance of Scientologists is necessary because of what they call the movement's anti-democratic activities. Celebrity members of the church, such as John Travolta and Tom Cruise, have backed the campaign against Germany's policy.

    Email: steve.kent@ualberta.ca Abstract
This article critically examines the allegations of religious intolerance that United States officials and governmental staff have leveled against France and Germany (along with other European countries) for their policies on, and actions toward, Scientology and other controversial groups. It argues that American officials appear to be poorly informed about the bases for the Europeans' critical positions, and that those officials have been the recipients of selective information provided by Scientology itself along with Scientology's supporters. It concludes by offering a preliminary analysis of this Euro-American debate in the context of 'international social movements' theory within the social sciences. Notice
