Religious Society of Friends
The Religious Society of Friends , commonly known as Quakers or Friends , is a religious community founded in England during the 17th century . Quaker congregations are scattered across the world. History
The founder of the Quaker movement was George Fox , who believed that the direct experience of the divine presence was available to all, without the need for any kind of mediation. This was revealed in his autobiography by the words: "There is One, even Christ Jesus , who can speak to my condition." Quakers often express a related belief that there is "that of God in Everyone", sometimes known as the "Inner Light". George Fox rejected the notion of a paid priesthood, believing instead that everyone can be a minister. Traditional Quaker worship, as established during his life, was conducted without any individual in charge of conducting a planned service. Instead, worshippers gathered in silence, which was only interrupted when someone in attendance felt moved by the Spirit to speak. Early Quakerism was full of a sense of spiritual egalitarianism, which included a belief in the spiritual equality of the sexes - remarkable for that time. Both women and men were granted equal authority to speak in Quaker meetings for worship. George Fox's wife, Margaret Fell-Fox was equally vocal and literate as her husband, publishing several tracts in Quakerism's early days.

var site="sm1QuakerInfo" Towards Renewal Within the Religious Society of Friends, Part 1 of 2
by Bill Samuel Reprinted with permission from Quaker Religious Thought #87 (May 1996) I appreciate the invitation from the editor to respond to Grant Thompson's paper, "A Perspective on Friends Membership" (QRT #86). I will draw upon that and other articles in the same issue in a discussion of Christian renewal within the Religious Society of Friends, with a particular focus on Christians in meetings where Friends lack a corporate commitment to Christ. The second series of choices offered by Thompson is:
    2. Ideally, the set of requirements for membership in Friends meetings (a) should , (b) should not include, as a subset, the set of requirements for membership in the Church Universal (i.e., the Body of Christ).
Thompson restricts his discussion to the first option. While I agree with Thompson that this should be the case, it is not in the Monthly Meeting (Adelphi) and Yearly Meeting (Baltimore) in which I hold my formal membership in Friends. For those of us for whom being part of the Body of Christ is central to our identity, this presents major problems.

A translation cannot reproduce in English all the meaning of the original text. On finer points and on some surprisingly major points, significant differences exist between one translation and another. The English words chosen to translate the Hebrew or Greek are important reflections of the translator's perspective. By using several different translations of the Bible, it will quickly become apparent that translators are human. Bible study in which different translations are read sensitizes the members to how the choice of English words affects the meaning of the text. The translator's words point to the meaning of the original text, which in turn is an effort to point to truth as the author understood it. This is a liberating insight to many, and it may transform a reader's antagonism toward the text and enable the reader to approach the text in order to understand the underlying truth.

We meet on Sundays at 11:00 a.m. for silent worship, followed by 10-15 minutes of worship-sharing and then a potluck lunch. In the summertime we meet in homes. After Labor Day through mid-June we meet in the Religious Education building of St. Joe's Catholic parish in Oneida, Wisconsin, west of Green Bay. Click here for a map and directions . For more information, call 920-749-0318 (Appleton) or (920) 337-0904 (Green Bay) or (920) 526-9295 (Shawano). Meeting for worship is a gathering together of individuals to form a spiritual community. The nature of the spiritual community transcends the state of each individual. It unifies us into an entity wherein we can worship together, sharing the communion of the Spirit. Though Quakerism is a tradition with Christian roots , we welcome seekers from all traditions and also those without a tradition, and non theists. Meeting for worship begins when we take our seats. There is no programmed service. There is only a silent waiting. That silence will allow you to quiet your mind and prepare to open yourself so that the divine, in whatever way you perceive it, might work in your heart. If you are moved to speak, speak from the conviction that you have been given these words and that they are not your own. When someone has spoken, let time pass before another person speaks. The silence will allow us time to reflect on what has been said. We believe that each person is directly responsible for his or her own relationship to God. Because each person's relationship with God is different and is always in a state of growth, we have no set creed. You will find a wide range of beliefs here, as well as people from many religious backgrounds. We are united by our desire to live good lives led by God. And, whatever our individual beliefs, we are expected to live those beliefs every day. There should be no separation between what we do at Meeting and what we do in our lives outside Meeting.

What is the Quarterly Meeting ?
The Religious Society of Friends is organized into Monthly, Quarterly and Yearly Meetings. The basic unit is the Monthly Meeting, the equivalent to the local congregation in most other churches. It is customary for Friends to worship every Sunday at a designated time. It is also the practice to hold business meetings once a month. Members of a Monthly Meeting are also members of the Quarterly meeting which meets for worship and business every three months. Similarly, all members within a certain geographic region belong to a Yearly Meeting which meets for several days once a year. Bucks Quarterly Meeting is composed of 13 unprogrammed Monthly Meetings and one Worship Group in the Bucks County area (including one New Jersey Meeting). Bucks Quarter is a member of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. For further information about any of these Meetings, or Quakers and their beliefs

59. Joining The Religious Society Of Friends
Joining the religious society of friends. The religious society of friends is better known for its peace testimony than for anything else.
http://www.hitchin.plus.com/Quakers/Joining.htm
Joining the Religious Society of Friends Meeting for Worship is open to all, but not everyone present at Meeting is a member of the Religious Society of Friends. Eventually most attenders begin to consider if and when they should apply for membership. This page deals with some of the questions which may arise. It is one person's view, and other people would probably emphasise different points, but as a whole it has the approval of the Elders of Lewes Meeting. How the present practice developed Until this century, new members were generally the children of Quakers, acquiring their membership as 'birthright' Friends. This is no longer possible, but there are still many Friends who were born into the Society. Parents may still, if they wish, apply to have a child (aged less than sixteen years) admitted into membership. On reaching the age of sixteen the child may then write to the Monthly Meeting Clerk to indicate a personal acceptance. Friends are aware that many such young people will prefer to defer such a decision, and many who as teenagers show little interest in the Society return to it in their twenties, thirties, or later. Those joining from outside were 'convinced' Friends. The procedure for joining was simple. The applicant wrote a letter to the Clerk of the Monthly Meeting which then appointed two Friends to visit, and their report was the basis for the decision as to whether they should be accepted. The procedures for application, for visiting, and the decision-making of the Monthly Meeting will be described in more detail later.
