The Torah tradition itself is a deep and wide resource for this project. Yet we know that generations of Jews have sharpened and distilled the ethical insights of Judaism as a result of their encounter with other cultures and traditions, and so it is in our time. Building the Future Reconstructionist Jews have strong commitments both to tradition and to the search for contemporary meaning. We are engaged in the ongoing task of building a relationship to our Judaism that is faithful to the past and relevant to the present. We want to create a Judaism for our day that is richly traditional, spiritually alive, and intellectually honest. We encourage contemporary Jews to enhance their own Jewish lives by reclaiming our shared heritage and becoming active participants in the building of the Jewish future.

Judaism as the Culture of the Jewish People For Reconstructionists, Judaism is more than Jewish religion; Judaism is the entire cultural legacy of the Jewish people. Religion is central; Jewish spiritual insights and religious teachings give meaning and purpose to our lives. Yet our creativity as expressed through art, music and drama, languages and literature, and our relationship with the land of Israel itself are also integral parts of Jewish culture. Each of these aspects provides a gateway into the Jewish experience that can enrich and inspire us. Community as Cornerstone While deeply connected to the historical experience of the Jewish people, we find a profound sense of belonging in our contemporary communities as well. This connection often leads to increased ritual observance and experimentation with the ritual rhythms of Jewish life. We find meaning in rediscovering the richness of traditional ritual and creating new observances which respond to our contemporary communal and personal cycles.

Reconstructionist Judaism
Reconstructionist Judaism is a denomination of Judaism characterized by:
  • The belief that an individual's personal autonomy generally overrides traditional Jewish law and custom , yet also holding that one's practices must take into account communal consensus. This leads to a somewhat more traditional set of observances than seen in Reform Judaism A positive attitude toward modern culture. The belief that traditional rabbinic modes of study, as well as modern scholarship and critical text study, are both valid ways to learn about and from Jewish religious texts. A non-fundamentalist method of teaching about Jewish principles of faith , along with the belief that no Jew needs to accept all, or any, principles of faith.

One of the great challenges faced by the Reconstructionist Movement is to continue its growth. As the newest of the movements, its institutions are still growing in ways the other movements no longer do. This allows for much creative thought and new approaches to Jewish life. The Reconstructionists’ report on the role of the rabbi is a prime example of their innovative approaches and thinking.
Jewish Reconstructionist Federation

As an educational association and clearinghouse for Reconstructionist Judaism, the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation assists Reconstructionist congregations and havurot as well as individuals seeking to learn more about the movement. Educational offerings include the recently revised Reconstructionist Educator’s Study Packet and a curriculum resource guide. The federation also develops and presents seminar programs on aspects of congregational development for leaders of affiliated congregations and havurot. The JRF’s publications catalog features music offerings, the book Exploring Judaism: A Reconstructionist Approach , and some key position papers on topics ranging from homosexuality and Judaism to the rabbi-congregation relationship. A key publication is the JRF quarterly

THE MOVEMENTS IN JUDAISM by Dr. Lawrence J. Epstein One of the real difficulties people who become Jewish have is deciding which movement within Judaism to join. In general, there are four major movements, although there are other, much smaller, groups as well, and some Jews do not affiliate with any group at all. This section includes information about those four major groups. In alphabetical order, the groups are: Conservative, Orthodox, Reconstructionist, and Reform Judaism. For more information specifically about conversion for all movements, see the section on "Getting More Information on Conversion to Judaism." This section focuses on information about the movements themselves. It is very difficult to generalize about these groups and there is great variety within each of the movements. Therefore, the best step for a potential convert to take is to read about each of the groups that sound interesting and, especially, talk with officials of the movement and visit a local synagogue of that group to attend a service. The descriptions below are not official statements of the respective movements and therefore constitute only my own understanding of the movements. I suggest contacting the movements directly to get both official statements and guidelines on conversion. CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM . Conservative Judaism is, along with Reform Judaism, one of the largest of the groups. Conservative Jews make up about 40-45% of those Jews who affiliate. Conservative Judaism accepts the notion that Jewish law (halakhah) is binding upon Jews. That is, that Conservative Jews have an obligation to obey all the teachings (mitzvot, which is also translated as commandments) of Judaism. Thus, for example, Conservative Jews emphasize the laws of keeping the Sabbath and keeping kosher. Conservative Jews believe that Jewish law, by its very nature, is capable of evolution as humans learn more about interpreting the Torah (the first five Books of the Hebrew Bible). Therefore, Conservative Jews have changed some of the earlier interpretations. For example, men and women worship together in Conservative synagogues, people may ride in a car on the Sabbath to attend services, and women can be ordained as rabbis.

Judaism Today
Judaism as it is found in the United States today is divided into four modern religious movements represented by synagogue membership. A small percentage of Jews identify with more or less extremist, rightwing, cult-like movements (such as Hasidism) which had their origins in eighteenth century Europe. A far larger percentage of Jews (nearing one-half, at any given time) identify themselves as Jewish though they belong to no movement—some of these do join synagogues from time to time, but others prefer to remain “secular” for ideological reasons. Mixed among both secular and synagogue-based Jews, there are others who center their Jewish identity on Zionism.
ZIONISM AND ZIONISTS
In the years just after World War II, Zionism (the desire to rebuild a Jewish national presence in the Promised Land) became a popular Jewish cause. Many Jews who had loose ties or no ties at all with religion became involved with the establishment of the State of Israel. Even today, many years after the successful founding of the State of Israel, there are Jews whose only real tie to Judaism is their belief in Zionism and their support for the State of Israel. They are joined by many Jews who are members of synagogues and support a modern Jewish religious movement, but who also find their prime identity as Jews in the Zionist cause. Broadly speaking, Zionists are proud that a small and struggling state made up mainly of Jews has created a modern democracy out of what were barren mountainsides, near deserts, and mosquito-breeding marshes. Zionists also point with pride at the ability of the Israelis to defend their land against the claims and armies of neighboring Arab nations.

Exploring Judaism: A Reconstructionist Approach (Expanded and Updated) > Customer Review #1: Guide to Reconstructionist Belief and Practice

The second half of "Exploring Judaism" is devoted to Reconstructionist practice study, prayer, ritual, social action, the development of inclusive communities, and the "structure" of the movement itself. These chapters do an excellent job of demonstrating how Judaism can be reconstructed into a vital center of ones life and community. Here the authors succeed in being inspirational without being preachy. "Exploring Judaism" seems to have been written for people who were raised in another Jewish movement and who have either dropped out or become disenchanted. A reasonable degree of familiarity with traditional Jewish practice and belief is assumed throughout. If you are lacking that familiarity, you may be somewhat lost, particularly in the later chapters. Recommended to anyone seeking to learn more about this path to reconnecting with Judaism.

This is an essay explaining what Reconstructionists believe. It is a Reconstructionist approach to spirituality. Reconstructionist Judaism: Faith You Can Believe In by Rabbi Gary S. Fink Oseh Shalom Congregation Reconstructionist Judaism For those in search of faith you can believe in, Reconstructionism might be the answer. Reconstructionist Judaism blends ancient tradition with contemporary thought in exciting and compelling ways. It brings together the intellectual clarity of our modern world, the dynamic spirituality of our mystical tradition, and the wellspring of faith from our rabbinic heritage. Through its unique spirituality and through its calling, Reconstructionist Judaism gives us a meaningful way to look at the world, and pathways to guide and enrich our lives. Reconstructionist Judaism is a product of 4,000 years of human experience and spiritual development. It enhances the spirit but does not close the mind. It leads us to a way of life whose goal is simple and profound -making a better world.

As we come to know ourselves as part of a community and create our own patterns of religious living, we create the context in which to join the spiritual quest that is so important in our time. In moments of prayer, song, social action and story we experience the reality of God, and we join in study and discussion where searching is as central as finding.

page: The history of Judaism spans thousands of years. It is comprised of many different denominations, and adherents hold divergent opinions about almost every issue. Therefore, to understand the place of glbtq people within Judaism, one must understand these divisions. First of all, Judaism is divided ethnically into Sephardic Jews (those who trace their ancestry back to Spain, Portugal, North Africa, and the Middle East) and Ashkenazic Jews (those who trace their ancestry back to Germany and Eastern Europe). Additionally, there are Yemenite Jews (those who trace their ancestry to the historic Holy Land), Ethiopian/Beta Israel/Falasha Jews (from Ethiopia), and Jews who have historically lived in Asia (particularly India, China, and central Asian former Soviet republics). These regional divisions have resulted in groups of Jews with different language traditions, different holiday practices, and different versions of the scriptures. Sponsor Message.

Three More Talks On Reconstructionism
at Friday Night Services
As we have grown, many have joined RSNS not out of a commitment to Reconstructionist Judaism per se, but to the way Reconstructionist philosophy is manifested. Though few have read the weighty tomes of Mordecai Kaplan, many have been attracted to our community’s non-hierarchal, intellectually open, playful, relaxed, process-driven profile. Though unidentified as a system, many rejoice in what distinguishes us from other synagogues, which could be summed up in the principles of Reconstructionist Judaism. To understand these distinctions ideologically, Lee Friedlander will offer three more talks on Reconstructionism in the course of Friday night services as follows:
  • March 21: The Place of Jewish Law and Ritual in Reconstructionist Judaism. April 25: Who is a Jew? A Reconstructionist Definition. May 16: Women and Judaism: Three Case Studies in the Life Cycle.
Each of these presentations will take place in the course of services. Note: Attendance at any given talk is not dependent on any previous talk.
Cantor Eric’s Study Group/Dinner
March 14th meeting has been cancelled.

Once you have firmly decided to become Jewish, the next step is to find a rabbi who will be your sponsor for conversion. This rabbi will take you through all the necessary steps, and will proclaim you ready for conversion only when he thinks that you're ready. So it's important to pick a rabbi you like and think you can get along with. When picking a rabbi, you have to consider many things, including location, whether you have to pay (and how much you have to pay) to be a member of the temple, and the temple's level of religiosity. There are four basic levels of religiousness:
  • Orthodox
  • Conservative
  • Reform
  • Reconstructionist Orthodox This is the most traditional branch of Judaism. Orthodox Jews will go to temple every Saturday, and they tend to have a literal interpretation of the Bible. Just think of this as the most religious of the branches. Converting to Orthodox Judaism will take up A LOT of time, because you have to read and learn a lot of Jewish laws, and you will probably have to learn how to read Hebrew. Jewish men who wear yarmulkes (or skullcaps, or a keepot, or whatever you like to call 'em) are probably Orthodox. Non-Jewish men who wear yarmulkes are probably trying to hide their baldness.
