Today Folklore Language Rastafarianism Although relatively small in number (there were about 14,000 firm adherents in the early 1980s), Rastafarians have had a wide-ranging influence on Jamaican culture. Their identifying dreadlocks (long, sometimes braided, hair) can be seen at virtually every level of society. Stressing the continuity of black African culture throughout history, Rastas believe in their direct spiritual descent from King Solomon's liaison with the Queen of Sheba. Rastafarianism, according to some, is based on an intuitive interpretation of history and scripturesometimes with broad brush strokeswith special emphasis on the reading of Old Testament prophecies. Rastafarians stress contemplation, meditation, a willingness to work inwardly to the "I" (inner divinity), and an abstractly political bent. Their beliefs are enhanced through sacramental rites of ganja (marijuana) smoking, Bible reading (with particular stress on references to Ethiopia), music, physical exercise, art, poetry, and cottage industries like handicrafts and broom-making. Reggae music developed from Rasta circles has produced such international stars as the fervently religious Bob Marley. Jamaica's politicians, aware of the allure of Rastafarianism, often pay homage to its beliefs.

About this page

Rastafarians worship Haile Selassie I, (know as Ras [Prince] Tafari) former emperor of Ethiopia, considering him to have been the Messiah and the champion of the black race. Although he has physically ''disappeared'', followers still claim to access his presence as Jah. Rastas believe that black people are the Israelites reincarnated and have been persecuted by the white race in divine punishment for their sins. They will eventually be redeemed by exodus to Africa, their true home and heaven on earth. Rastafarian lifestyle emphasises harmony with the world, and may include a vegetarian diet, growing dreadlocks, and the smoking of ganja (marijuana). Rastafarians draw on parts of the Bible as spiritual texts. Source: An A-Z of Religions in the UK , NewsUnlimited
Rastafarians acknowledge that their religion is the blending of the purest forms of both Judaism and Christianity; they also accept the Egyptian origins of both these religions. In affirming the divinity of Haile Selassie, Rastafari rejects the Babylonian hypocrisy of the modern church. The church of Rome, and even the council of Rome, are considered to be particularly Babylonian: was it not from this city that Mussolini invaded the holy land of Ethiopia in 1935? Religions always reflect the social and geographical environment out of which they emerge, and Jamaican Rastafari is no exception: for example, the use of marijuana as a sacrament and aid to meditation is logical in a country where a particularly potent strain of 'herb' grows freely.

Behold, the lion of the tribe of Judah hath prevailed.
"...[o]nly in the kebra nagast, and not in the bible...the bold assertion is made...that the ark had gone from jerusalem to ethiopia."..."[h]ow could the most important biblical object in the world end up in the heart of africa...? the kebra nagast...with a great deal of weight and historical authenticity...offers a clear answer to this question...as ethiopia's claim to be the last resting place of the lost ark remains unchallenged..."..."[t]he kebra nagast's audacious claim of a massive cover-up...[and]all information about the tragic loss of the ark during solomon's reign had been suppressed, which is why no mention is made of it in the scriptures."..."a great epic...a remarkable document...erected above a solid foundation of historical truth."
Rastafari is a movement of Black people who know Africa as the birthplace of Mankind and the throne of Emperor Haile Selassie I a 20th Century Manifestation of God who has lighted our pathway towards righteousness, and is therefore worthy of reverence. The Rastafari movement grew out of the darkest depression that the descendants of African slaves in Jamaica have ever lived in the stink and crumbling shacks of zinc and cardboard that the tattered remnants of humanity built on the rotting garbage of the dreadful Dungle on Kingston's waterfront. Out of this filth and slime arose a sentiment so pure, so without anger, so full of love, the Philosophy of the Rastafari faith. It was a flower in a pigsty, watered by the nourishment of the Prophet Marcus Garvey, swayed by the wind of local political change, and cherished by the Black man's long witheld desire to hold his head upright. Freedom of Spirit, Freedom from Slavery, and Freedom of Africa, was its cry.

Pride in African heritage has increased thanks to the work of groups like Akoma The Rastafarian movement, which began in Jamaica in the 1930s, has been a significant influence on many of the young people in the community over the last two or three generations, having an effect on dress, hair, food and language. Our Untold Stories It has also been partly responsible for the increase in pride in an African heritage. Over the years, schools, youth and community organisations have increasingly shown interest in the art, music, dance and food of the Caribbean and Africa. Individuals, and groups such as Akoma have done much to educate citizens of Gloucester in the culture and traditions of the African-Caribbean community.
