What is Rastafarianism?
Rastafarianism is a religious mixture of Ethiopian Christianity, Old Testament Judaism, African Animism and spiritualism. It has no constant dogma. The name "Rasta" is an abbreviation for Rastafarianism. This cult is very active in the Caribbean Islands. The main points in this religion are: 1. Rastas believe Haile Selassie, whose real name was Ras Tafari, is the lamb and sacred god of the black people. They say that he, the late King of Ethiopia, was a direct descendent of King Solomon. 2. They say God, Jesus and the early Christians were black. That is why they oppose all pictures or other illustrations that teach that Jesus was a white man, and say it is wrong. 3. They say God became man in Haile Selassie, who still lives in another dimension. They deny the Biblical teaching that Jesus is God. 4. They say they are the true Jews. 5. They claim that the Bible was written by black people for black people. 6. All white people are demons (so they say). 7. Black people shall only be free when they return to Africa, because they are foreigners in other countries such as Jamaica and the other Caribbean Islands. 8. Some of them believe in reincarnation. This is an Eastern belief from Hinduism or Buddhism. They wear their hair in "dreadlocks," symbolizing the lamb's wool of their god Haile Selassie. They smoke "dagga" or "ganya" (marijuana) which they regard as sacred herbs in religious rituals. They have their own, individual style of music, called "reggae" which they use in religious and political propaganda. Bob Marley and his pop group "The Wailers" were the best known of the Music of Reggae.

    Abstract
    From The Paper
"Marcus Garvey was born in 1887. He was one of the people responsible for the Rastafarian movement, because of his philosophical ideologies. He was the founder of the "back-to-Africa" movement, as well as an influential spokesman during the early 1920's. Garvey predicted the coming of the Rastafarian's redeemer, and just a few years later, his prediction came true, when Haile Selassie was crowned King of Ethiopia. Marcus Garvey had been said to be only second to Haile Selassie. His philosophy was credited as the beginning point of Rastafarianism. Rastafari comes from the word Ras, meaning "prince", in the Amharic language, and the word Tafari, which was the name of the emperor of Ethiopia."

A Brief History of Rastafarianism By Crispin Sartwell
From very early on, perhaps basically since slaves were introduced to the Caribbean, or in the next generations, Africa came to be regarded as a garden from which the slaves had fallen (or rather, been pushed). That is an element in the traditional Africanist religions, such as the Voodoo of Haiti and New Orleans, Santeria in Cuba, Macumba in Brazil, and Obeah and Myal in Jamaica. It is, one must say, an understandable response. These religious movements were also, of course, influenced by Biblical Christianity, and there may have been also from early a slight undertone of African Islam: scriptural religions dedicated to the power of texts, with a hint of messianism and apocalypse. (An analogy to some of these movements would be the Ghost Dance cult of American Indians, designed to return the continent to a pristine pre-genocide condition.) Jamaica itself, like Haiti, has a long, distinguished history of political rebellion mixed with religious elements (Cudjoe and Sam Sharpe must be mentioned here). The island is particularly suited to these developments: settled and planted along the coasts, it has a relatively huge, inaccessible, mountainous interior, and bands of escaped maroons settled there very early. Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) was a stunning success all over the black world, particularly in the United States, and was essentially the first mass movement for black self-determination. Garvey himself tended toward pomp and ceremony, and was perhaps not the greatest financial manager. But in my view he was honest, sincere, and stunningly effective. He preached back to Africa, and though he used religious metaphors constantly, he basically taught a kind of qualified Christianity and tried to stay out of religious disputes. But he did teach a "black" interpretation of Christianity, focused especially on Psalm 68: "Princes shall come out of Egypt, and Ethiopia shall stretch forth his hands to God." Garvey used the term "Ethiopia" constantly, using it essentially as a name for Africa, for the promised land, a heaven from which black folks had been exiled.

    58. Rastas, Rastafarianism, Haile Selassie, God, Faith
An interesting lesson about the genesis of religions can, I think, be learned from rastafarianism, a religion of the 20th century.
    http://www.crispinsartwell.com/christianrastas.htm
By Crispin Sartwell One question that has always nagged at me is how Christianity (for example) ends up dominating much of the world for millennia. This of course is only a question on the supposition that Christianity is false. But not only do I think it's false; in some sense I think it's arbitrary; that a wide variety of mythical cycles other than Christ's passion and a wide variety of other messiahs could have done as well. Really, you could not throw a brick in the Middle East of that era (or almost anywhere in the world today, for that matter) without hitting some chump performing miracles and claiming the Godhead. But there are indeed compelling aspects to Christianity: the idea of God made fully human, for example - perhaps Christianity's most characteristic teaching - though it is not entirely unique and is not (obviously, I guess) logically coherent, is a powerful idea. An interesting lesson about the genesis of religions can, I think, be learned from Rastafarianism, a religion of the 20th century. I say this not to ridicule Rastafarianism: which is as plausible as any religion and has its own extremely compelling aspects. I say this, rather, to understand the phenomenon of religion from an external point of view, as someone who finds the whole thing fundamentally unbelievable. Rastafarianism worships the Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie as God. Selassie is in some ways an unlikely candidate: small and unprepossessing, pretty mild though pretty inefficient, with a grandiose streak but not one that extended to claiming his own divinity. As emperors go, fairly mediocre, deposed, and dead as a doornail. The charismatic origin of the religion, however, was Marcus Garvey, who had a gift of leadership and organization, and who was perhaps the first international star to emerge from the island of Jamaica. Sometimes he talked or wrote in a kind of prophetic style, and through oral transmission, various prophecies attributed to him flowed into common wisdom, as perhaps John the Baptist's did about Jesus.
