Rastafari is a movement of Black people who know Africa as the birthplace of Mankind and the throne of Emperor Haile Selassie I a 20th Century Manifestation of God who has lighted our pathway towards righteousness, and is therefore worthy of reverence. The Rastafari movement grew out of the darkest depression that the descendants of African slaves in Jamaica have ever lived in the stink and crumbling shacks of zinc and cardboard that the tattered remnants of humanity built on the rotting garbage of the dreadful Dungle on Kingston's waterfront. Out of this filth and slime arose a sentiment so pure, so without anger, so full of love, the Philosophy of the Rastafari faith. Freedom of Spirit, Freedom from Slavery, and Freedom of Africa, was its cry. Religions always reflect the social and geographical environment out of which they emerge, and Jamaican Rastafarianism is no exception: for example, the use of marijuana as a sacrament and aid to meditation is logical in a country where a particularly strain of 'herb' grows freely. Emerging out of the island of Jamaica in the later half of this century, the religious/political movement known as Rastafarianism has gained widespread exposure in the Western world. • Name: Rastafarians, Rastas, or Ras Tafarians
  • Founder: Tafari Makonnen, pre-coronation title of His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia. However, Selassie was more the embodiment of the Rasta faith than the actual founder of the religion. In actuality, he was known to have been devoted to Ethiopian Orthodox faith, which is more Christian-based in its theology.
  • Date of Birth:
  • Birth Place: Harer, Ethiopia
  • Year Founded: approximately 1930
  • Sacred or Revered Texts: Certain sections of the Holy Bible are considered sacred, however the Rastafarians believe that some aspects of the Bible were changed by " Babylon ," which has come to represent the white power structure. To greater represent the truth, Rastafarians reject the Bible used by most Christians, opting instead for a "black man's Bible," known as the Holy Piby Also, Rastafarians give special significance to the Ethiopian Holy Book, the Kebra Negast
  • Cult or Sect: Negative sentiments are typically implied when the concepts "cult" and "sect" are employed in popular discourse. Since the Religious Movements Homepage seeks to promote religious tolerance and appreciation of the positive benefits of pluralism and religious diversity in human cultures, we encourage the use of alternative concepts that do not carry implicit negative stereotypes. Rhetoric of Reggae Music Reggae Links Dread Library Catalog There is s real shortage of academically oriented literature about reggae music and its various social, political, and religious manifestations. Many of the best resources are out of print, hard to find, or not held in most libraries. This was a real challenge for my students in Speech 214: The Rhetoric of Reggae Music when they went to write their term papers. We decided to light a candle as opposed to just cursing the darkness, so we thought that students who were interested could post their papers in HTML in a DREAD LIBRARY so that others seeking information could benefit from the work they have already done. Here is a selection of papers from Spring, 1998 and Spring, 2000. I appreciate the extra work that these students did to get these papers web ready. They are offered as undergraduate essays. I have not checked the references nor engaged in active rewrites of these papers, because this is not intended to be a collection of refereed, publishable, scholarly articles, but a sample of what some students of reggae have been writing. However, I do suggest you study the references so that you can try and find and read these primary works on your own. We understand that everyone may not agree with what is being said here, and encourage your comments and suggestions, but it is important to remember that there is no one true perspective on most of these issues. Reggae music, rastafarianism, and related topics are not singular fields there are many reggae musics, many brands of rastafarianism, and many different perspectives expressed by those involved.

Buy Reggae Music Haile Sellassie The prime basic belief of the Rastafarians is that Haile Selassie is the living God for the black race. Selassie, whose previous name was Ras Tafari, was the black Emperor of Ethiopia. According to Rastafarian philosophy, the scriptures phrophecied him as the one with "the hair of whose head was like wool (matted hair of a black man), whose feet were like unto burning brass (black skin)". Rastas believe that Selassie was the Jesus that Christianity speaks of; that the white man tricked the world into believing that he was a White man. Many Rastas do not believe Haile Selassie I is dead. They believed that it was a trick of the media to try and bring their faith down because Rastas believe that true Rastas are immortal. To compensate for his death they believe that his atoms spread through out the world and became part of new babies, therefore, his life is never ending. The Rastafarian name for God is Jah. Ethiopia (Heaven or Zion) Ethiopia specifically, African in general, is considered the Rastas' heaven on earth. It is also referred to as Zion. There is no afterlife or hell as Christianity believes. The Rastas feel that their ancestors did something to offend Jah which brought them into an exile of slavery in the Western World such as the Caribbean.

    Rastafarianism
A handful of "crazy men" appeared in the 1930's making absurd claims about the Emperor of Abyssinia being the Messiah: Ras Tafari, afterwards crowned as Haile Selassie, which translated means "the Power of Trinity." There were not many that expected the profound effect the movement would have on Jamaican society. The Rastafarians were long-haired and bearded long before the advent of hippy fashions. These men were ready to suffer for their beliefs. Rastafarianism is assisted by sacramental ganja smoking, drumming, Bible reading and chanting. They have also acquired a capacity to culture ideas through music, costume, physical exercises, art, poetry and indiqenous "cottage" industries like broom-making. Reggae music developed in the rasta "yards" and produced superstars like the late Bob Marley. Politicians are very conscious of Rasta influence among Jamaica's youthful majority. They even awarded Bob Marley the Jamaican Order of Merit while he was dying of cancer. The "Dread," the true Rasta, is a peaceful, careful, preferably self-employed achiever who stays within the law - save for his sacramental smoke.

The movement views Ethiopia as the Promised Land. The group has no individual leadership. Most of the members are men from thirty-five to fifty-five years of age. The older members are either ex-Graveyites or sympathizers of his movement. Women play an important role in the Rastafarianism today, but the majority are followers of their husbands. In 1965 the membership was essentially lower class, but this is no longer the case. The Rastafarians were once considered "products of the slum," but Rastafarians now can be found among the middle class. They are found among the elite, some are students at prestigious University of the West Indies; some are in the medical and legal professions and other upper-class occupations. Their unique hairstyle known as the "dreadlocks" which many people feel is wild and unattractive is one of the reasons the Rastafarians obtained a negative image in society. Rasta, which is short for Rastafarians, adopted the dreadlocks while in the hill country in Jamaica where the movement developed its early characteristics. Another trait that is contributed to the Rastafarian’s negative image is their use of "ganja" (marijuana) in their rituals. These two particular traditions have deemed the Rastafarians as an unacceptable society by Westerners, as well as the people from within there own community.

    Rastafarianism
The Rastafarian religion originated in Africa.  It is often associated with the poorer black population of Jamaica.  It is not just a religion, but a way of life.  Rastafarians speak out against; poverty, oppression and inequality.....not just religious ideas but global problems.  Rastafarians will use the Bible for guidence.
The prime basic belief of the Rastafarians is that Haile Selassie is the living God for the black race.
Selassie, whose previous name was Ras Tafari, was the black Emperor of Ethiopia.  Rastafarians say scriptures prophesised him as the one with "the hair of whose head was like wool (the matted hair of I black man), whose feet were like unto burning brass (I black skin)".
Selassie was not a Rastafarian himself.  He was a devout Christian.  In fact, no one is really sure what he thought of the whole Rastafarian movement.  When a group of Rastas went to Ethiopia to honour him, an official of the palace told them to go away!  This did not make the Rastas question their belief, it only made it stronger. God is not supposed to know he is God.
When Haile Selassie was reported dead, Rastas would not believe it.  They believed that it was a trick of the media to try and bring their faith down.  Rastafarians believe that Haile Selassie I has trodded on to the perfect flesh, and sits on the highest point of Mount Zion where He and Empress Menen await the time of judgement.
