The Matrix Rhetoric of Reggae Music Reggae Links Dread Library Catalog There is s real shortage of academically oriented literature about reggae music and its various social, political, and religious manifestations. Many of the best resources are out of print, hard to find, or not held in most libraries. This was a real challenge for my students in Speech 214: The Rhetoric of Reggae Music when they went to write their term papers. We decided to light a candle as opposed to just cursing the darkness, so we thought that students who were interested could post their papers in HTML in a DREAD LIBRARY so that others seeking information could benefit from the work they have already done. Here is a selection of papers from Spring, 1998 and Spring, 2000. I appreciate the extra work that these students did to get these papers web ready. They are offered as undergraduate essays. I have not checked the references nor engaged in active rewrites of these papers, because this is not intended to be a collection of refereed, publishable, scholarly articles, but a sample of what some students of reggae have been writing. However, I do suggest you study the references so that you can try and find and read these primary works on your own. We understand that everyone may not agree with what is being said here, and encourage your comments and suggestions, but it is important to remember that there is no one true perspective on most of these issues. Reggae music, rastafarianism, and related topics are not singular fields there are many reggae musics, many brands of rastafarianism, and many different perspectives expressed by those involved.

There were not many that expected the profound effect the movement would have on Jamaican society. The Rastafarians were long-haired and bearded long before the advent of hippy fashions. These men were ready to suffer for their beliefs. Rastafarianism is assisted by sacramental ganja smoking, drumming, Bible reading and chanting. They have also acquired a capacity to culture ideas through music, costume, physical exercises, art, poetry and indiqenous "cottage" industries like broom-making. Reggae music developed in the rasta "yards" and produced superstars like the late Bob Marley. Politicians are very conscious of Rasta influence among Jamaica's youthful majority. They even awarded Bob Marley the Jamaican Order of Merit while he was dying of cancer. Rastafarianism The Rastafarian religion originated in Africa.  It is often associated with the poorer black population of Jamaica.  It is not just a religion, but a way of life.  Rastafarians speak out against; poverty, oppression and inequality.....not just religious ideas but global problems.  Rastafarians will use the Bible for guidence. Selassie was not a Rastafarian himself.  He was a devout Christian.  In fact, no one is really sure what he thought of the whole Rastafarian movement.  When a group of Rastas went to Ethiopia to honour him, an official of the palace told them to go away!  This did not make the Rastas question their belief, it only made it stronger. God is not supposed to know he is God. When Haile Selassie was reported dead, Rastas would not believe it.  They believed that it was a trick of the media to try and bring their faith down.  Rastafarians believe that Haile Selassie I has trodded on to the perfect flesh, and sits on the highest point of Mount Zion where He and Empress Menen await the time of judgement.
