In Joseph Livesey and seven Preston workingmen signed a pledge that they would never again drink alcohol. Other groups of working men followed the example of Livesey and his friends and by 1835 the British Association for the Promotion of Temperance was formed.
At first temperance usually involved a promise not to drink spirits and members continued to consume wine and beer. However, by the 1840s temperance societies began advocating teetotalism. This was a much stronger position as it not only included a pledge to abstain from all alcohol for life but also a promise not to provide it to others.

Welcome . . . and thanks for flying by. This site is
We are life long animal servants who individually longed to start aviaries. Not long after we met, this now shared dream came true. In October of 1999 we opened the doors of Exotic Flock Aviary. In our indoor/outdoor aviary we currently breed Blue, Cinnamon (AKA: Red-Eyed Cinnamon) , Cinnamon Blue, Pallid (AKA: Dark-Eyed Cinnamon), Pallid Blue, and Lutino Quaker varieties. As we grow, we hope to add other Quaker mutations to our Exotic Flock, but will place a high priority on individual care and attention. We believe in complete honesty regarding our aviary. So, we have attempted to produce a detailed site to describe our breeding practices and opinions. You will find general information about Quaker care and specific details ab out our breeding program on the Aviary Nursery and Diet pages. The diet section describes not only our breeding parents' diet , but also their kids' diet and our weaning practices. The Parents section provides specific information about the genetics, bloodlines, and breeding history of many of our current breeder pairs while the Kids section keeps a running tally of current availability and pricing as well as a list of references . If you'd like to get to know us and our feathered/furry family a bit better, visit the section

QUAKERS
Because the Protestant reformers of the sixteenth century attempted to eliminate intermediaries between God and people, the Society of Friends, or Quakers, may be regarded as the fullest expression of the Reformation. Most reformers rejected some sacraments and priestly offices of the Roman Catholic church, but the Quakers omitted them all, including baptism, the Lord's Supper, and any ordained, paid clergy. Quakers instead relied upon the direction of what they called "Christ within" or the Inner Light. Their worship consisted of waiting in silence until the Inner Light led members to share their religious concerns with the brethren. To most Protestants, this primary reliance on inward inspiration depreciated the authority of the Bible, the centrality of the historical Jesus and the Atonement, and hierarchy within church, state, and family. The earliest Quakers (in England, 1651-1660) seemed to confirm the worst suspicions of their critics by proselytizing with abandon and adding thousands to their numbers. Then and later, they were persecuted as "ranters" or anarchists. Even within the Society of Friends the significance of the Atonement and the Bible remained an unsettling question, causing schisms, especially in the nineteenth century. But Quakers enjoyed a complementary freedom from biblicism that permitted the Society uniquely to innovate and change radically over the centuries. Quaker abolitionism was one such innovation.

108. AFL #122: Filming The Reputation Of Truth: Quakers In The Movies
FILMING THE REPUTATION OF TRUTH quakers IN THE MOVIES. The Deep Six, 1958, with Alan Ladd and William Bendix, is another variation of the quakersat-war motif.
http://www.afriendlyletter.com/afl122.html
From A Friendly Letter FILMING THE REPUTATION OF TRUTH:
QUAKERS IN THE MOVIES
It is easy to get entirely too highfalutin about the cultural significance of movies. Here, after all, is one consumer business among others, relentlessly probing and pandering to the popular moods and images of the moment, perhaps illuminating them, but perhaps merely exploiting them. Does it really, for instance, signify anything more profound than a youthful appreciation for whimsy that the top cinematic heroes of American children in 1991 are turtles, rather than, say, iguanas? I'm dubious. On the other hand, the persistence of certain images and themes in many successful films, as well as the occasional success of movies with countering images, might be able to tell us something about the culture which produces them, as well as the place of these films' persisting elements in the culture. THE HERO AND THE CANON In this hermeneutic effort, the weight of mythic meaning has been loaded particularly heavily onto that indigenous American film genre, the western. At least, the Western is a favorite with male critics. Bosley Crowther, formerly film critic for the New York Times , pointed out in The Great Films that Westerns above all are about a hero "...this man with the gun and the impulse to use it rightly is the crux of the genre. Set against some form of evil, he is the central figure in the vast mythology built up and perpetuated in almost all western films. And it is a mythology, as powerful and indigenous as that which the Greeks clarified in dramatic poetry 2500 years ago."

Famous Quakers.
The Ironbridge. M y Quaker pages (see list below) are a tribute to Quakers who have made an impact upon history or are still living and are well known in society. Quakers believe that each person in the world is of equal worth. I don't intend to suggest that anyone listed on these pages is better than those of us who are not famous, but I think that through their examples it may be possible to see the contribution made by Quakers in many different fields. Some of the people listed were not or are not practising Friends, although they were born into Quaker families. I have included these people because it is difficult to be clear about the extent of someone's faith, especially if we have limited information about their life. They all represent a wide spectrum of humanity with different gifts.
