  • Quakers in Britain worship in silence, unless individuals feel led by the Spirit to minister. We have no common creed, but believe that there is that of God in everyone. We value practical action to make a better world, in areas like alternatives to violence, peace, social justice and responsible management of world resources.

Some 50,000 North Carolinians left the state and moved to Ohio or Indiana in protest to slavery during the thirty years before the Civil War is not widely known. As the frustration with more restrictive and harsh laws over slaves and slave owning were passed, some quakers, like Levi Coffin, began to illegally assist escaping slaves to flee the state.

Visitors enjoy our peaceful gardens and wild flower meadow. The Hall houses a fine collection of 17 th Century furniture, and was the powerhouse of the early Quaker Movement. Guided tours (only) mid-March to mid- October, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 2.30pm. Groups can be accommodated at times mutually arranged. This Grade II* listed Hall also provides a unique and peaceful setting for conferences and seminars. Rooms are available in the old house or, for a group of up to 35, in the larger, purpose - built Fell Barn. The Fell Barn incorporates a servery and dining facilities, has a full range of audio-visual equipment available for hire, and is fully accessible for wheelchair users. Groups can also work undisturbed in the garden – weather permitting! An added bonus is the opportunity for conference guests to view the historic rooms of the old house, which can be opened up by arrangement with the staff. Conference organisers can make bookings to suit their specific needs, from one room to the whole site, which includes overnight accommodation for up to 16. The staff at Swarthmoor Hall work hard to meet individual requirements, and pride themselves on their flexible, friendly and relaxed approach. In consultation with conference organisers, they can arrange catering, and are equally happy for groups to cater for themselves using the well- equipped kitchen facilities.

Quakers, like Puritans, had their origins in the hotbed of European religious dissent. In addition to the many Quakers who suffered abroad, there were some who felt called to go further afield. The Quaker faith soon came to American shore. (Stratton) Though some had undoubtedly embraced the tenets of the Quakers prior to the arrival of two female missionaries in 1656, there is apparently no evidence to indicate that they had proclaimed themselves or adopted the name of the despised sect. Had they done so, they probably would have been at least named in the recommendation of the Court made in May of the same year, that "the 11th day of June next…be kept as a public day of humiliation, to seek the face of God in behalf of our native country, in reference to the abounding of errors, especially those of the Ranters and Quakers," etc. Plymouth, somewhat less severe in its approach to the Quaker "problem," still deemed them the "pernicious sect called Quakers . . , who sowed their corrupt and damnable doctrines, both by word and writings . . .so as the number of them increased, to the great endangering and subversion of the whole . . ."

One of the things probably best known about Quakers is that we have a testimony against participation in war, which we call the peace testimony . As the Quaker movement was developing, Christian bodies did not generally take a pacifist stance. Friends themselves took a little while to become clear about it as a movement. In the very early years of the movement in the mid-seventeenth century in Britain, some Friends served in Cromwell's army. As late as 1659, prominent Friend Isaac Penington wrote a paper To the Parliament, the Army, and all the Well-affected in the Nation, who have been faithful to the Good Old Cause , in which he said the army had been "glorious Instruments in the hand of God."
    Development of the Peace Testimony
Although the peace testimony was not a clear testimony of the movement as a whole at first, it does seem to have been clear early on to George Fox, generally called the founder of Quakerism. In his

From the early days of the Religious Society of Friends in the 17th century, the Quaker approach towards the Bible has confused many and been controversial. It doesn't neatly fit the usual theological categories. Some charged that Quakers denied the authority of scripture, but Friends vigorously defended against that charge.
    Barclay on the Scriptures
Most early Friends were not theologically trained. Robert Barclay was the notable exception. He wrote the premier theological work of early Friends, commonly known today simply as Barclay's Apology . As was the custom with theological works of that day, it was written in Latin and first published in 1676 as . In 1678, it was published in English as An Apology For the True Christian Divinity, As the same is held forth, and preached by the People, Called, in Scorn, Quakers

The Parrot Page - Reba The Quaker Parrot
Quaker Parrots are smaller than Conures and very very sweet, at least Reba is very sweet. She never nips or pouts or causes me any trouble except that she is mean to Quincy, my Blue Crowned Conure. She hops off her cage and runs across the room to Quincy's cage. She climbs his cage and chases him. He used to hide from her but now he bites her so I try to keep them separate. Reba never yelled until I got Quincy. He likes to yell and she discovered it was fun. Overall, however, she is relatively quiet.
Reba loves to operate. She can't stand for my skin to have even one blemish. She removes scabs, freckles, and any other blemish she can find. She loves to kiss and kiss and kiss. She loves to snuggle. She is nice to everyone but Quincy.
Reba is very good with company. She will sit on their hands quietly and happily and is good with children. She talks with a gravely little voice that is hard to understand. I say "Come Here" to her when I want her out of her cage and pretty soon she was saying it too. She says "I'm a little Quaker" quite plainly and taught this to Quincy the Conure. She also says "I love You", "What cha doin", "weeba", "bye" and "hello".
I feed my birds pellets. I just changed Reba over from seeds and she seems to love the pellets. She also gets fresh fruit, fresh veges, and nibbles of whatever I eat. She loves bananas, strawberries, broccoli, sprouts, canalopes....
