    Plymouth Brethren
Who are the Plymouth Brethren? In the mid 1820's a group of Godly men began meeting together apart from their local churches to worship and break bread, and to study the Word together. They were not trying to start a movement of any kind, but were simply attempting to find spiritual food and fellowship. Eventually, their meetings spread and became a movement. One of the most notable groups was located at Plymouth; hence, the name "Plymouth Brethren." Today, there are hundreds of Brethren Assemblies scattered around the world. One key concept the Brethren hold to is that we accept no name that is not common to and inclusive of all believers worldwide. In other words, we do not hold to denominational names or man-made sects. We strive to hold to New Testament principals for holding and maintaining our meetings. We believe that the New Testament teaches that there is to be more than one man leading in a local church; therefore, our churches are always led by a group of elders as opposed to a pastor or minister. Another distinction of the Brethren is that we meet every Lord's day to break bread and thus remember the Lord until He comes. During this time no one individual is in charge of any kind of program, it is simply left to the Holy Spirit to move the brothers to lead in worshipping and remembering our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This is just a brief summary of some of the distinctives of the Plymouth Brethren in general. For more detailed information on the Plymouth Brethren and our history, please visit the

Blair Neatby’s classic study of the Brethren first appeared in 1901. Despite the lapse of a century it remains an invaluable guide to the first seventy years of the Brethren movement, and is likely to appeal to general students of church history, as well as to those with a particular interest in the Brethren. As the author states, "The Brethren sought to effect a fresh start without authority, precedent, or guidance beyond the letter of Holy Scripture… Such an experiment in the hands of eminent men could scarcely fail to yield a considerable harvest of interest and instruction…" An early reviewer of Neatby’s History wrote the following commendation. "In this most careful and scholarly work Mr. Neatby has traced the history and tenets of the Brethren — open and exclusive — and it is quite certain that no one could have done the work better. Apart from his vast personal knowledge of his subject, he has had unique opportunities of collecting material from little known or unknown sources. The result is a most valuable history of a sect of which most people are hopelessly ignorant, written in a perfectly easy, readable style…" Iain Murray has described Neatby’s work as a "fascinating volume"; "perhaps the most valuable source work on the Brethren"; and has assessed Neatby’s "critical insights" as "particularly valuable".

    The Plymouth Brethren
Following Darby's return to England in 1845, disputes over doctrine and church government split the Brethren. Darby's followers formed a closely-knit federation of churches, and were known as the Exclusive Brethren; the others, called Open Brethren, maintained a congregational form of church government, and less rigorous standards for membership. The Exclusive Brethren later split into yet smaller sub-sects. Return to Index Page

    The Brethren
The matter of the local church Scripture Witness Lee spoke often of the Brethren in relation to their ministries, crediting them, along with the Moravian Brethren, for having begun the recovery of the proper practice of the proper local church life: Watchman Nee Orthodoxy (Watchman Nee, What Are We? Both Watchman Nee and Witness Lee have testified that they received much spiritual help and scriptural enlightenment from the Brethren. They were particularly impressed by the abundant blessing that accompanied their emphasis on the equality and oneness of the believers. Although the Brethren were not fully clear regarding the matter of the local church, they nevertheless experienced the blessing that God bestows upon believers who meet together in unity (Ps. 133). Today those meeting in the local churches enjoy the same divine blessing upon all those who are willing to forsake every element of division in order to be one. Next Page
